Company to pursue global orders in earnest, leveraging supply chain competitiveness, product portfolio, and process technology innovation

POSCO Future M is establishing an overseas plant for artificial graphite anode materials as part of its drive to expand global orders.

As trade regulations and protectionism intensify worldwide, the need to stabilize supply chains for key battery materials is becoming increasingly critical. Against this backdrop, POSCO Future M has been in ongoing discussions with multiple customers regarding artificial graphite anode material and is now making a strategic investment to scale up production capacity and strengthen its business competitiveness.

At a board meeting on the 5th, POSCO Future M approved an investment of approximately KRW 357 billion to build a new plant for artificial graphite anode materials in Thai Nguyen, an industrial city in northern Vietnam. Construction is set to begin in the second half of this year, with mass production targeted for 2028. The facility will be built on a site capable of supporting up to 55,000 metric tons of production capacity, with further expansion to proceed in phases as additional orders are secured.

Artificial graphite anode material is a key battery material well-suited to improving fast-charging performance and extending battery life. While demand for the material continues to grow steadily, heavy reliance on a limited number of countries has made supply chain diversification an urgent priority.

POSCO Future M currently operates an artificial graphite anode material plant in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, with an annual production capacity of 8,000 metric tons. Building on the manufacturing expertise gained through domestic operations, the company plans to produce cost-competitive products at its Vietnam facility for supply to global customers.

Vietnam offers significant advantages in reducing costs across investment, electricity, labor, and logistics, with a cost structure that remains competitive even relative to other Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia. The country also benefits from well-developed industrial infrastructure, including a reliable power grid, and is actively cultivating favorable trade conditions with major markets, including the United States, through its export-driven economic growth strategy.

The United States last year introduced Prohibited Foreign Entity (PFE) requirements under the implementing regulations of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), while Europe has established targets under the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) to reduce dependence on specific countries for strategic raw materials, reflecting a broader global push to restructure supply chains.

In response to these market dynamics, POSCO Future M has been working toward full vertical integration of its supply chain across the entire production process for both natural and artificial graphite anode materials — from raw materials and intermediate inputs through to finished products — and is increasingly recognized as a viable alternative for global automakers and battery manufacturers seeking to diversify their supply chains.

POSCO Future M first localized natural graphite anode material production in 2011, and went on to complete its artificial graphite anode material plant in Pohang in 2021, establishing a full-scale mass production system and playing a leading role in advancing supply chain self-sufficiency for Korea’s battery industry. The company has further diversified its anode material portfolio to cover the full product spectrum, expanding capacity for both natural and artificial graphite anode materials while also advancing the commercialization of silicon anode material, and has earned wide recognition for its technological capabilities through continuous process innovation aimed at improving productivity.

Leveraging its supply chain solutions and technological capabilities to navigate trade regulations across major markets, the company is currently in supply discussions with numerous customers in Korea, North America, and the EU for both cathode and anode materials. POSCO Future M is committed to continuously strengthening its business competitiveness and expanding its sales, aiming to go beyond its standing as Korea’s only producer of both cathode and anode materials and emerge as a top-tier global battery materials player.

As one of the world’s fastest developing countries, exports are expanding, foreign direct investment (FDI) is pouring in and new infrastructure is built every day.

Cities like Hanoi are expanding at an increasing rate.
Urbanization is also speeding up growth. By 2030, more than 10 million people will reside in Ho Chi Minh City. Not only demographically, Vietnamese urban areas are getting bigger physically, with a spatial expansion rate of 2.8 percent per year, which is faster than any other urban area in the Southeast Asian region. The growth is stimulating demand for new homes, roads, infrastructure as well as labor.

As a result, the country is already the biggest steel consumer in the region, driven by a strong construction industry and abundant FDI.

Foreign Direct Investment

During the record-breaking year of 2017, Vietnam saw registered FDI increase 44 percent YOY, and exports rise 23 percent. The majority of investment came from nearby countries such as Korea, Singapore, Japan and China, where the cost of labor is much higher than in Vietnam. Plus, of the country’s 92 million people, 60 percent are of working age, and have demonstrated high output levels. Thus, loads of manufacturing jobs are being offshored to Vietnam.

For example, Korea’s Samsung Display invested USD 2.5 billion in Vietnam last year, bringing total investments to USD 6.5 billion for the production of their display products. Polytex Far Eastern, a Taiwanese company, also invested USD 490 million for their yarn factory in Vietnam. With the continued flow of FDI, the country’s economy is reaping the benefits in terms of financial gain as well as developments in infrastructure.

Foreign Investment has created many jobs for Vietnam’s workforce, such as the workers above in a Samsung Factory.
Two metro projects are under way in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, both funded by foreign companies. Ho Chi Minh City’s Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien line will run through the city at a length of 19.7km, and is planned for completion in 2020. Most of the funding comes from Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica), Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation and Shimizu-Maeda.

In Hanoi, the 13km Cat Linh-Ha Dong line is mainly supported by China Railways Sixth Group along with a consortium of other Chinese companies, and is scheduled to open for operation in 2018. Such major infrastructural upgrades will further boost the cities’ efficiency and create a better living and business environment.

A Strong Construction Industry

With FDI stimulating the economy and creating jobs, the Vietnamese are enjoying higher living standards and searching for homes in or near major cities. The growth of the middle class and urbanization have led to a booming construction industry.

According to POSCO Research Institute, Vietnam’s construction industry made up 33.3 percent of total GDP, with an 8 percent growth in 2017 alone. Moreover, the industry is projected to grow at an annual rate of 7 percent for the next 10 years. As a result, Vietnam’s construction industry is driving the nation’s steel demand. From 2011 to 2016, Vietnam’s steel demand grew by an average annual rate of 18.1 percent, the highest of Southeast Asian countries with the Philippines in second place at 13.6 percent and Thailand following behind at 5.7 percent.

With more and more homes and public infrastructure being built, Vietnam’s construction spending has grown at a CAGR of 8.5 percent and construction steel accounts for more than 93 percent of steel demand in Vietnam. Of those figures, structural steel demand is expected to make up 80 percent of the country’s entire steel demand, reaching 24 million tons by 2020. In comparison, the construction industry is accountable for 65.3 percent of total steel demand in Indonesia and 59.7 percent in Thailand, two of the biggest economies in the region.

POSCO opened its first-ever structural steel solution center abroad in Vietnam. The opening ceremony was held on February 7 at POSCO SS VINA, attended by some 50 officials including Oh In-hwan (COO, POSCO), Ho Nghia Dung (President, Vietnam Steel Association) and Bui Anh Hoa (Vice President, Hanoi University of Science and Technology).

In recent years, Vietnam has undergone rapid urbanization with subsequent advancements in housing, energy and infrastructure. As such, demand for structural steel is expected to reach 24 million tons by 2020. The figures represent 80 percent of Vietnam’s entire steel demand, making Vietnam a booming market for steel consumption in Southeast Asia.

As the Vietnamese construction industry is projected to see an annual growth rate of 7 percent for the next 10 years, POSCO plans to pursue preemptive solution marketing activities with local affiliates such as POSCO SS VINA and POSCO-VST.

POSCO SS VINA will supply Vietnam’s growing structural steel demand.

They also look to cooperate with local organizations to maximize benefits for their clients, by providing support for a wide range of technologies related to molding, binding, improved performance and structuralization.

Additionally, POSCO intends to promote packaged marketing services for large-scale projects to offer various products such as R.H. (ROLLED H-BEAM), BH (Built up H-Beam) and steel bars in one batch.

POSCO is organizing 3 separate departments – the Solution Planning Department, Solution Development Department and Technical Services Department – to successfully create, develop and implement a local, customized marketing strategy. A total of 25 experienced construction experts will serve as consultants.

In January, POSCO also established a “Solutions Marketing Center” under its base corporation in Vietnam and China to provide support for its increased production and sales worldwide.

For some, steel may be nothing more than an alloy of iron used as a structural and fabricating material. But when steel is combined with compassion and collaboration, it can turn into something greater and more powerful. The POSCO 1% Foundation and their “POSCO Steel Village” project are just one example.

The POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation

The POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation was created in 2013 to mobilize support from POSCO Group employees and subcontractors. Volunteers donate 1% of their monthly salary to the foundation, which then goes to fund projects for communities that need support the most.

The Foundation has completed a number of meaningful projects under this venture utilizing the company’s advanced steel products, such as PosMAC and PosCozy. From Korea to Myanmar and Vietnam, POSCO employees have helped with the construction of numerous houses, playgrounds, and villages.

Myanmar Steel Bridge

In Hmawbi, a village outside of Yangon, Myanmar, villagers were struggling to cross the wooden bridge they had used for years. The wooden planks were rotting with holes making it unsafe and difficult to cross. During the rainy season, it was near impossible to use. In order to help the residents of Hmawbi commute safely, the POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation decided to replace the old bridge with a new one made of steel.

Residents of Yoewa Village crossing the steel bridge built by POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation

The newly built bridge, 3 meters wide and 20 meters long, utilized POSCO steel plates and PosMAC, a World Premium Product known for its unique strength, lightweight, and durable properties. On May 24, the foundation completed the construction of the steel bridge with the help and collaboration of the POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation. Over 150 people including POSCO employees, residents of Hmawbi, and other partners in Myanmar gathered to celebrate the completion of the project.

POSCO Vietnam Steel Village

In response to the request of Vietnam’s government to build a residential complex for the underprivileged in the Ba Ria–Vung Tau Province, POSCO Group began building houses in Vietnam’s largest business clusters near Ho Chi Minh City in 2014. Over the course of three years, over 1,500 POSCO Group employees and student volunteers have participated in various construction work, including a steel framing job, building walls, and painting, to help build houses for low-income families.

With donations from the POSCO 1% Foundation and using POSCO’s advanced steel solutions, the project was completed on June 13. Together with Habitat for Humanity, the POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation built a total of 104 steel houses in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province for 500 low-income families. While POSCO SS-VINA provided H Beams for building the house frames, POSCO A&C was in charge of supplying insulation materials that can absorb rain impact noise and block direct sunlight as well as designing the natural ventilation system.

In Korea, the POSCO 1% Foundation built Donggurang Steel Land, an indoor playground for children, and donated it to the local government in Incheon. Previously in 2013, the foundation established an agreement with the Incheon Government Office to build public facilities for children of dual-income families and began the construction. The playground includes an artificial rock climbing wall, a smart gym board, and other facilities that provide children with a safe environment in which to play.

The two-story facility was designed and constructed using POSCO’s own materials and technology. While the roof was built with corrugated steel plates with corrosion-resistant steel, the outer wall was constructed by applying a steel curtain wall system.

The POSCO TJ Park Foundation held its 2017 award ceremony at the POSCO Center on March 29 to recognize excellence in science, education, community development, and technology. The POSCO TJ Park Prize was established in 2006 in honor of the late chairman and founder of POSCO, Tae-joon Park. Park laid the groundwork for the industrialization and modernization of Korea and contributed to the economic & industrial development of Korea by encouraging the general public to adopt POSCO’s founding principles of creativity, talent development, sacrifice and volunteerism. The foundation celebrates its 11th anniversary this year.

More than 290 people attended the presentation ceremony, including Ohjoon Kwon, chairman of the POSCO TJ Park Foundation; Chang-hee Kang, former chairman of the National Assembly; Hong-goo Lee and Deok-soo Han, former prime ministers of Korea; Gong-il Sa, chairman of the Institute for Global Economics; Nak-in Sung, president of Seoul National University; and prize winners from previous years.

Ohjoon Kwon, POSCO CEO and chairman of the POSCO TJ Park Foundation, said, “For the past 10 years, the POSCO TJ Park Prize has been a way to recognize those who tackle the never-ending challenges of today’s world. In the next 10 years, we aim to make the POSCO TJ Park Prize an even more noteworthy honor.”

This year, the POSCO TJ Park Prize was awarded to the following honorees:

Excellence in Science: Prof. Jong-heun Lee, Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Korea University

Excellence in Education: Attached Middle School at Kyungpook National University

Excellence in Community Development & Philanthropy: Jimmy Pham of Vietnam, CEO of KOTO

Excellence in Technology: Myeong-hwan Kim, head of the Battery Research Institute at LG Chem.

<img class="wp-image-11262 size-full" src="https://newsroom.posco.com/en//wp-content/uploads/2017/04/POSCO-TJ-Park-Award-Ceremony-2017.jpg" alt="POSCO CEO Ohjoon Kwon (far right) stands with those were recognized at the POSCO TJ Park award ceremony for their noteworthy achievements in science, education, community development, and technology. The award recognized their noteworthy achievements in science, education, community development, and technology.

The Excellence in Technology award was added this year to highlight how technology has contributed to the renewal of the Korean economy. Eligible candidates for this category include persons or organizations that contributed to national and global market development.

Prof. Jong-heun Lee of Korea University, winner of the TJ Park Science prize, was honored for his work on the oxide nano hierarchical structure in which nano building blocks are regularly self-assembled, and the p-type oxide semiconductor, which has a high level of catalytic activity that allows for gases to be detected quickly and selectively. His achievements are expected to be widely utilized in various areas such as safety, environment, medical science, and IoT.

Kyungpook National University Attached Middle School, winner of the Excellence in Education prize, was awarded for its model of creative public education. Unlike a typical learning environment, the middle school introduced project-based learning in 2012, which allowed students to switch roles with teachers and also collaborate with one another on a deeper level.

Jimmy Pham, winner of the Excellence in Community Development and Philanthropy prize, established KOTO (Know One, Teach One), the first social enterprise in Vietnam. For 17 years, the organization has been giving at-risk youth a chance to stand on their own by teaching various life-skill classes.

Myung-hwan Kim, head of the Battery Research Institute at LG Chem, received the foundation’s very first Excellence in Technology prize. Kim began to oversee battery R&D in 1996 when the secondary battery business was first starting to become active. Through much trial and error and over 20 years of experience in the field, Kim successfully developed the first lithium-ion battery for electric vehicles. He is considered to have greatly contributed to making Korea a leader in the secondary battery industry.

Chang-hee Kang, former chairman of the National Assembly, delivered a congratulatory address, saying, “I would like to thank POSCO for contributing not only to the development of science and technology, but also for actively recognizing scholars and citizens who made a great impact in their respective fields.”

On November 18, the POSCO TJ Park Foundation presented scholarship awards, encouraging the work of 28 Asian scholars at the POSCO Center in Seoul.

Over 100 people attended the award ceremony, including the POSCO TJ Park Foundation’s CEO, Ohjoon Kwon; 12 university-related executives including Sogang University Chairman Byungnam Yoon, Yonsei University International Campus Vice President Kyungtae Lee and KDI School of Public Policy and Management Dean Hongtack Chun. Fourteen directors of the Foundation were also present, including former Seoul National University President Joongho Sunwoo, Barun Law Attorney Ilhoan Park, Yonsei University Honorary Professor Bok Song, Seoul National University Professor Hokeun Song, Samchully Chairman Joonho Han and Samil PwC Chairman Kyungtae Ahn, along with 53 Asian scholars.

The scholarship for Asian students studying in Korea is an inbound scholarship supporting young and talented individuals from developing Asian countries to complete master’s or doctoral courses at approximately ten of the most prestigious graduate schools in Korea.

The scholars will complete master’s or doctoral courses at some of the most prestigious graduate schools in Korea, and then return home to contribute to their countries.

The POSCO TJ Park Foundation selected a total of 28 people as POSCO Asia Fellows this year: 9 from Vietnam, 3 from Indonesia, 3 from China, 2 from Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Kazakhstan, and 1 from Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Iran, India and Malaysia.

These scholars will study for two years at institutions in cooperation with the Foundation, such as the Seoul National University Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS), the Seoul National University Graduate School of Public Administration, Yonsei University GSIS, Korea University GSIS, Sogang University GSIS, Ewha Womans University GSIS, KDI School of Public Policy and Management, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Graduate School of International and Area Studies, POSTECH Graduate School and the Academy of Korean Studies. The Foundation provides full tuitions and living expenses of 1 million KRW a month for two years.

“Asia is the most rapidly growing and dynamic region in the world today, but it’s also scattered with more and more ethnic, religious, ideological and territorial conflicts,” remarked CEO Ohjoon Kwon while delivering words of encouragement at the ceremony.

“The POSCO TJ Park Foundation’s POSCO Asia Fellowship is POSCO’s effort in the private sector to broaden the scope of interaction and cooperation among Asian countries. We hope that, despite our different appearances and thoughts, all the scholars value the sense of cooperation for the joint prosperity of Asia.”

CEO Kwon’s speech was followed by a presentation titled “Growing My Dream with Korea” by Feruza, an Uzbekistan native who is currently an economics major at the Graduate School of Korean Studies of the Academy of Korean Studies. She discussed how she felt and thought of her experience in Korea so far. Moreover, all of the scholars sang a Korean pop song in unison, which they had rehearsed over the last month, receiving applause and a fervent response from the audience.

Furthermore, the POSCO TJ Park Foundation is providing all kinds of support for the convenience of the scholars during their stay in Korea, in addition to the award ceremony hosted by the Chairman for the scholars. A mentor-mentee program is offered for fellows who just came to Korea to help them with issuing the certificates and signing contracts for studio apartments.

Programs are also provided for them to experience society and culture in Korea. Learning the Korean language is also made mandatory so that they can comfortably speak basic Korean during the two years of their stay. Once they are about to return to their homeland after their studies, a conference will be hosted for the students to present their research papers to share the two years of their academic achievements, which will be a fruitful experience for them.

The POSCO Asia Fellowship, which is celebrating its 11th anniversary this year, has provided 12.3 billion KRW to a total of 324 scholars. Most of the scholars are growing into leaders in their home countries after graduation, working as public servants, college professors or employees at global corporations. Furthermore, POSCO Asia Fellows are also running and supporting the POSCO Reunion. Past examples include reunions at Vietnam in 2011, Thailand in 2014, Indonesia in 2015 and India in 2016.

As the core program of the Foundation, the POSCO Asia Fellowship consists of a total of five programs: 1) a scholarship for Asian students studying in Korea, 2) an Asia research grant that supports research by Asian scholars on the liberal arts and social sciences, 3) an Asia regional expert training for in-depth research on the Asian region, 4) scholarship for excellent Asian universities and 5) publication of the first Asian literary journal.
