Most of those people live in rural areas and half of the 844 million people live in Africa. For those living in developed nations, having easy access to drinking water is a given, and the amount of water consumed on a daily, monthly or yearly basis is of little importance. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, it seems the world just can’t get enough of water. Global water demand is projected to increase </span><a href="http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20170412-is-the-world-running-out-of-fresh-water" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">55 percent</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> by 2050. Most of the demand will be driven by the agriculture industry, which currently makes up </span><a href="http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20170412-is-the-world-running-out-of-fresh-water" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">70 percent</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of freshwater consumption, but is projected to grow another </span><a href="http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20170412-is-the-world-running-out-of-fresh-water" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">69 percent</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to meet the food demands of the growing population. New-growth industries will put additional pressure on freshwater supplies. For example, water used to cool power stations is projected to increase by more than </span><a href="http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20170412-is-the-world-running-out-of-fresh-water" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">20 percent by 2055</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and water demand from the manufacturing industry in developing nations will grow by </span><a href="https://www.worldfinance.com/news/the-threat-of-water-scarcity-looms" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">400 percent by 2055</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Unfortunately, </span><a href="http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20170412-is-the-world-running-out-of-fresh-water" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">97.5 percent</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of earth’s surface water is inadequate for human use. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The growing demand is putting heavy pressure on current water supplies that appear to be shrinking due to global warming and climate change. As a result, there have been extensive efforts by individuals and households to conserve and recycle water. However, in major cities around the world, water is wasted before it even reaches people’s taps. </span></p>
<h2><b>Water leaking through the cracks</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the U.S., about </span><a href="https://www.npr.org/2014/10/29/359875321/as-infrastructure-crumbles-trillions-of-gallons-of-water-lost" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">2.1 trillion gallons</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of water slip through the cracks, literally, each year, or about 6 billion gallons of water per day. The ancient water infrastructure throughout the country is full of leaking pipes, cracked mains and broken meters. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For example, the largest water filtration plant in the world, Jardine Water Filtration Plant, is located in the city of Chicago and pumps out purified water to about 5 million residents via thousands of miles of pipes. However, about </span><a href="https://www.npr.org/2014/10/29/359875321/as-infrastructure-crumbles-trillions-of-gallons-of-water-lost" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">22 billion gallons of water</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> leak through old pipes and broken water mains in the city every year. In Philadelphia, the Water Department pumps out 250 million gallons of purified water daily to nearby residents, but </span><a href="https://whyy.org/segments/with-nearly-200-year-old-pipes-phillys-water-leak-rate-stays-high/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">more than 60 million gallons</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> are lost through the pipes every day. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In Canada, home to some of the most abundant supplies of freshwater, there are cities with </span><a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/city-water-leaks-wasting-millions-of-tax-dollars-1.1048035" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">35 to 45 percent water loss.</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Ontario, for example, has outdated and leaky pipes responsible for the loss of about  </span><a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/city-water-leaks-wasting-millions-of-tax-dollars-1.1048035" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">CAD 700 million per year</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in wasted drinking water. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the UK, about </span><a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/water-torture-3300000000-litres-are-lost-every-single-day-through-leakage-2034999.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">872 million gallons, or 20 percent</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> the nation’s treated water supply, leaks through old pipes before it reaches residents. This is 62 million gallons more per day than water loss rates from a decade ago, showing the severe consequences aging pipes can have.  </span></p>
<h2><b>Faulty water pipes</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The biggest problem with water systems around the world is simply their age. They were built ages ago, often with insufficient materials and outdated technology, and now, they’re too expensive and extensive to repair or replace. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, old pipes can pose a number of problems. Besides the gallons of wasted purified water, an outdated water system can pose major health risks. In the U.S., </span><a href="https://www.popsci.com/drinking-water-standards#page-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">1 in 4 people</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> drinks unsanitary water due to insufficient water infrastructure. It has already been proven that </span><a href="https://phys.org/news/2015-06-leaky-pipes-contaminants.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">contaminants can enter the water system</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> through leaks that are most often caused by corrosion and material defect. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Water pipes installed decades ago are traditionally made of </span><a href="https://utilitieskingston.com/Water/mainbreaks" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">cast iron and laid on wooden blocks or rocks</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Such pipes are highly corrosive and most susceptible to damage. Also, a well-functioning pipe keeps contaminated water out with pressure from mains that forces water out of minor cracks, but not in. Over time, damage to a certain section of a pipe can cause this pressure to drop, and groundwater often finds its way in through cracks. </span></p>
<h2><b>Making it right with steel</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The ideal solution for outdated, faulty water pipes would be to replace them with new ones equipped with the latest damage detection and repair technologies. However, such projects are not only expensive, but a city’s water system is often politically, regionally and physically intertwined with other entities, making it difficult to take on such a mammoth task. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Thus, cities opt for isolated repairs instead, either placing a stainless steel clamp over the damaged area or inserting a smaller stainless steel pipe inside the existing, cracked pipe. Stainless steel is the most common material for repairing and replacing outdated cast iron, concrete and lead pipes due to its excellent strength and resistance to corrosion. Higher grades of stainless steel, such as </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/poscos-posssd-brings-innovative-new-possibilities-world-stainless-steel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO’s PossSD</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, can also resist high levels of pressure and are naturally resistant to microbes. Stainless steel can also be manufactured to withstand extreme temperatures. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Major cities such as </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/time-clean-pipes-stainless-steel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tokyo, Seoul and Taipei</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> are undergoing massive projects to replace the majority of their water pipes with stainless steel to ensure safe and abundant drinking water for residents. For other cities, repairing leaky pipes with stainless steel will save millions of dollars currently leaking through the pipes and prevent illnesses associated with contaminated water. As the global demand for water continues to grow and fresh water supplies continue to shrink, conservation is becoming more important than ever, ensuring that stainless steel will play a vital role in water pipe repairs and replacements for years to come in efforts to correct and maintain the system that serves the basis of all human activities. </span></p>

It may seem as though the celebrations are over, but some cities around the world are just getting started with carnivals, festivals and events that draw thousands of people from all over the world. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s no easy task to prepare a city for such big-scale events, but it’s a great opportunity for host cities to boost their economy and make a lasting impression on visitors. For most, the airport will be their first impression of the city, so host cities have vamped-up their airports with the help of steel.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Take a look at the airports expecting the most traffic in the beginning of the year:</span></p>
<h2><b>Guarulhos International Airport &#8211; Brazil</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Every year, from February 24 to 28, the people of Rio de Janeiro hold the Carnival, which unofficially lasts from the end of December to March in the form of hundreds of street parties called blocos. In 2017, more than </span><a href="http://riotimesonline.com/brazil-news/rio-business/brazil-registers-surge-in-2017-carnival-attendance/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">1.1 million people</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> showed up for the Carnival from all over the world and spent about </span><a href="http://time.com/4209973/carnival-brazil-rio-de-jeneiro/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">USD 782 million</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> during their stay. The Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) is the busiest airport in Brazil, and traffic has tripled from </span><a href="http://www.airport-world.com/features/airport-design/5650-project-watch-sao-paulo-guarulhos-international-airport.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">12.9 million people in 2004 to 39.5 million in 2014</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. To accommodate the growing number of passengers, the airport has undergone several additions and renovations in the past couple of years. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, GRU built the 192,000 square-meter Terminal 3 to increase its passenger capacity by 12 million, bringing up the total capacity to </span><a href="http://www.airport-technology.com/projects/so-paulo-guarulhos-international-airport-terminal-3/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">42 million</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Terminal 3 consists of 2 main buildings made up of 40 metal modules weighing 70 tons each, held together by concrete pillars. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Then, in 2016, Terminal 2 was renovated ahead of the Summer Olympic Games to fit modern airport standards. With a budget of USD 50 million, architects took existing facilities that were close to 30 years old and rebuilt them into the modernized Terminal 2. The new terminal now accommodates plenty of retail space and a massive food court, and </span><a href="http://www.airport-world.com/features/airport-design/5650-project-watch-sao-paulo-guarulhos-international-airport.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">non-aeronautical revenues make up 51 percent of the airport’s entire revenue</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It seems the airport, and the city, made a lasting impression as last year, over </span><a href="http://riotimesonline.com/brazil-news/rio-business/brazil-registers-surge-in-2017-carnival-attendance/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">94 percent of tourists that took part in a survey</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> said they would make another trip to the city and over 91 percent responded they would recommend Rio to their friends. </span></p>
<h2><b>Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport &#8211; USA</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) is another airport that sees millions of visitors every year during the month of February. Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, landed on February 13 this year, marking the end of a month-long celebration. It’s basically the American version of the Rio Carnival, and social crews or Krewes organize different parties all over town. The event draws about </span><a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2013/08/14/world/mardi-gras-fast-facts/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">1.4 million participants</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> on average. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Starting in 2016, MSY is working to complete a 972,000 square-foot North Terminal by February 2019. The project will cost about USD 1 billion to construct. When finished, the new terminal will include 35 new gates, a massive parking garage for 2200 cars as well as a central utility plant. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Besides increasing the passenger capacity, the project created about </span><a href="http://www.nola.com/traffic/index.ssf/2017/11/airport_terminal_construction.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">64,000 jobs and generated USD 6.4 billion in local spending and USD 2.4 billion in local earnings</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The project is also responsible for tons of steel consumption in the form of beams, bars and panels. On November 17, 2017, workers erected a </span><a href="http://www.nola.com/traffic/index.ssf/2017/11/airport_terminal_construction.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">steel beam at the highest elevation</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of the new terminal, signaling the project will most likely be completed on schedule. </span></p>
<h2><b>Incheon International Airport &#8211; Korea</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s not every year Korea gets thousands of visitors in the month of February, but as the host for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, Incheon International Airport (ICN) is bustling with passengers. Global passenger flights were up </span><a href="http://money.cnn.com/2018/02/07/news/olympics-winter-pyeongchang-south-korea-travel/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">15 percent</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> this year compared to last year, and up </span><a href="http://money.cnn.com/2018/02/07/news/olympics-winter-pyeongchang-south-korea-travel/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">24 percent in the U.S.</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> alone. In Vietnam, bookings were up </span><a href="http://money.cnn.com/2018/02/07/news/olympics-winter-pyeongchang-south-korea-travel/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">550 percent</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> from the previous year, the Philippines saw a </span><a href="http://money.cnn.com/2018/02/07/news/olympics-winter-pyeongchang-south-korea-travel/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">200 percent </span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">increase and Canadians booked</span><a href="http://money.cnn.com/2018/02/07/news/olympics-winter-pyeongchang-south-korea-travel/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;"> 40 percent more flights</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, all in time for the 2018 Winter Olympics. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To greet the growing number of passengers, ICN completed its second terminal earlier this year using POSCO’s 446M steel. The same type of steel was used to build the first passenger terminal in 2001, but this time, architects decided to apply a special process called Bead Blast to create a rough texture on the roof of the terminal to minimize reflectivity as it can interfere with sight during take-off and landing. The steel also contains high amounts of chromium (26%) and molybdenum (2%), making it extra corrosion resistant. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As the #1 ranked airport in service quality for the last 10 years, ICN will now be able to service more passengers, </span><a href="https://www.airport-technology.com/projects/incheon-international-airport/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">72 million to be exact, and 5.8Mt of cargo</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> every year.</span></p>

																<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Last year, 144 skyscrapers over 200 meters were built all over the world, setting a new record for the greatest number of skyscrapers built in a single year. The 144 skyscrapers can be found in 69 different cities across 23 countries, but more than half of them were built in China. The tall buildings come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but they have one thing in common: steel is the material serving as the backbone of the grand structures. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This year, more skyscrapers will fill the skylines of cities, mostly in Asia. Continuing on from previous years, cities, architects and the general public alike are favoring low-energy, sustainable buildings and showing a tendency to renovate existing buildings with reinforcements where possible. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Take a look at 2 of the tallest skyscrapers built in 2017, and some of the most exciting building projects coming scheduled for completion in 2018. </span></p>
<h2><b>2017: Ping An Finance Center </b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Ping An Finance Center is located in the city of Shenzhen, and is the second tallest building in China and fourth tallest building in the world. The entire structure measures </span><a href="http://www.skyscrapercenter.com/building/ping-an-finance-center/54" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">599.1 meters, or 1,965 feet</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, offering 119 floors of office and retail space. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Ping An Finance Center is classified as a composite building, meaning both steel and concrete materials are used to make up the main structural parts of the skyscraper. This can apply to any of the following combinations &#8211; steel columns with concrete beam floors, steel structure with a concrete core, steel columns encased in concrete or a system of steel tubes filled with concrete. The exterior is outfitted with a </span><a href="https://newatlas.com/2017-ctbuh-skyscraper-review/52655/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">sculpted stainless steel facade</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> for maximum corrosion resistance to coastal climate. </span></p>
<h2><b>2017: Lotte World Tower</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Korea’s Lotte World Tower is the tallest building in Korea and the fifth tallest building in the world measuring 555.7 meters and 1,823 feet from the ground to the very top. Construction began in Seoul back in 2011 and took 7 years to complete. The 129-story building is made of a reinforced concrete core, concrete encased steel columns and steel floor spanning. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO supplied the 40,000 tons of steel to build the Lotte World Tower, consisting of both regular and thermomechanical control processed (TMCP) steel. As part of POSCO’s solutions marketing, the company proposed using 120 mm thick high-performance grade steel (SM490TMC) instead of welding 40 mm and 80 mm thick plates together for better performance and cost efficiency. The steelmaker also proposed the use of a steel column flat plate structure and steel piping for enhanced shock, high-wind and fire resistance. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lotte World Tower also features solar panels, wind turbines and water harvesting systems as part of a sustainable, eco-friendly design. </span></p>

<h2><b>2018: Hanking Center Tower</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The </span><a href="http://www.skyscrapercenter.com/building/hanking-center-tower/15741" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Hanking Center Tower</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> scheduled for completion in March of 2018, will set a new world record as the tallest all-steel building in all of Asia. Most skyscrapers are made of a mixture of concrete and steel, but the Hanking Center Tower is composed of a unique, all-steel structural system. The main body is also detached from the core by about 9 meters, held together by a series of sky bridges and steel braces to allow the building flexibility to withstand seismic activity and maximum exposure to natural light.  </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At 350 meters, or 1,148 feet, the Hanking Center Tower will be classified as a super tall building when completed in west Shenzhen, China. The building underwent extensive seismic and wind tunnel tests for performance verification, and residents and visitors alike will be able to enjoy the sky gardens and spacious open spaces in the heart of the city. </span></p>
<h2><b>2018: Salesforce Tower</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">San Francisco has a new tallest building with the opening of the Salesforce Tower in January of this year. Standing at 326.1 meters, or 1,070 feet, the skyscraper also made extensive use of steel for its columns and floor spanning and features a reinforced concrete core. The Salesforce Tower is also one of San Francisco’s most-expensive buildings at </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/photos-of-salesforce-tower-san-francisco-2017-4/#it-was-originally-named-transbay-tower-but-the-enterprise-giant-bought-the-naming-rights-in-a-landmark-real-estate-deal-salesforce-will-pay-the-developer-boston-properties-close-to-560-million-over-15-and-a-half-years-to-lease-30-floors-at-the-tower-on-mission-and-fremont-streets-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">USD 1.1 billion</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Not only is the 65-story building San Francisco’s tallest building, it is the city’s first commercial building to use a </span><a href="https://www.salesforce.com/blog/2018/01/salesforce-tower-innovative-water-recycling-system.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">water recycling system</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The city government, Boston Properties and Salesforce teamed up to support blackwater reuse that will give tenants of the building access to recycled water. The skyscraper also has net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.</span></p>
<h2><b>2018: Comcast Technology Center</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The 341.7 meters, or 1,121 feet tall Comcast Technology Center opened early this year, and stands as Philadelphia&#8217;s tallest skyscraper. The </span><a href="https://philly.curbed.com/2018/1/8/16862492/comcast-technology-center-tower-amenities-fact-sheet" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">USD 1.6 billion</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> building also has </span><a href="https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/New-Comcast-Technology-Center-Smart-Building_Philadelphia-466668913.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">smart features</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, including a central plant that acts as the brain of the building, using artificial intelligence to learn human patterns. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The skyscraper can track the number of people inside, predict weather patterns and will only generate just enough energy required for any given time. The building also makes use of water running through all parts of the building to cool temperatures and has a special, silver coated glass which can repel heat from the sun. As such, the Comcast Technology Center is one of the most technologically advanced and green buildings in the U.S. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Continuing on from a strong year of construction in 2017, the new skyscrapers of 2018 and beyond will continue to strive for environmental sustainability, incorporate newer technologies and make extensive use of steel for cost efficiency and safety. </span><b></b></p>

Higher labor costs, as well as the rising cost of oil, contributed to the downturn. Unfortunately, oil prices are projected to reach up to </span><a href="https://knoema.com/yxptpab/crude-oil-price-forecast-2017-2018-and-long-term-to-2030" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">USD 100 per barrel by 2030</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, double the current market prices of around USD 50. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The future may look uncertain for commercial aviation, but the increasing demand for passenger flights, the need for new aircraft as well as new innovations are expected to stimulate the industry in 2018 and beyond. </span></p>

<h2><b>Smaller planes, more frequent miles</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">City pairs, or pairs of departure and arrival airports, are growing around the globe. According to Aviation Week Network’s </span><a href="http://pages.aviationweek.com/2018Forecast" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">2018 Fleet &amp; MRO Forecasts</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, South Asia’s routes will increase from 650 in 2006 to 1200 by 2026. African routes will expand from 1400 to 2600 in the same time frame and Russia and the CIS region will see an additional 1000 routes by 2026. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For such city pairs, 100 to 150-seat aircrafts are ideal, and airlines will opt to add more of the crafts to their fleet over larger crafts that are hard to fill.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The growing global demand for passenger flights will further contribute to the need for more small-sized planes. In 2016, a total of </span><a href="http://www.travelagewest.com/Travel/Trending/Top-5-Airline-Trends-for-2018-and-Beyond/#.Wi95XVWWaHt" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">3.8 billion passengers</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> flew the skies, and the number is projected to reach </span><a href="https://www.traveldailynews.com/post/strong-airline-profitability-continues-in-2018" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">4.3 billion in 2018</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<h2><b>Out with the old, in with the new</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the next 20 years, most of the existing fleet of aircraft will retire, and be replaced with new aircrafts. This will create an increased demand for airplane parts, new technology and labor. The overall volume of the global fleet will increase at an average yearly rate of </span><a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/aviation-week-network-releases-2018-fleet--mro-forecasts-300529084.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">3.1 percent</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, and a major bulk of the supply is projected to come from the Asia-Pacific region.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To add, the cost of maintenance, repairs and overhaul (MRO) for aircrafts older than 10 years will reach </span><a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/aviation-week-network-releases-2018-fleet--mro-forecasts-300529084.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">USD 1 trillion</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> for the first time ever, creating more business opportunities for suppliers and service providers. </span></p>
<h2><b>Military aircraft will play its part in the Aviation Industry</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the U.S., the government is planning to spend </span><a href="http://edition.cnn.com/2015/07/16/politics/f-35-jsf-operational-costs/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">USD 400 billion</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> on fifth generation </span><a href="https://www.f35.com/about" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">F-35 fighter jets</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> made by Lockheed Martin Corp, and </span><a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-airshow-paris-f35/exclusive-lockheed-nears-37-billion-plus-deal-to-sell-f-35-jet-to-11-countries-idUSKBN1990S8" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">11 other countries</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> are currently working out a purchase deal worth over </span><a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-airshow-paris-f35/exclusive-lockheed-nears-37-billion-plus-deal-to-sell-f-35-jet-to-11-countries-idUSKBN1990S8" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">USD 37 billion</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Moreover, </span><a href="http://www.oagaviation.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">USD 67.3 billion</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is projected to be spent on the MRO of the world’s military aircraft, up 14.9 percent from USD 58.6 billion in 2008. With increasing tensions all over the world and subsequent rise in defense spending, demand for military aircraft will likely continue. </span></p>
<h2><b>And then there’s flying cars</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Although not traditionally counted as part of the aviation industry, flying cars are popping up in cities around the world and blurring the lines that define different transportation industries. With increasing investment, flying vehicles may become a reality in the next couple of years, and most will be flying on clean fuel. Here are some companies with plans to launch flying cars.</span></p>

<h3><b>Uber</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Uber recently announced its partnership with NASA to develop an electric aircraft taxi service called UberAIR, planned to be up and running in 2020. If successful, the vehicle will be quieter than a helicopter, travel up to </span><a href="https://www.fastcompany.com/40411391/inside-ubers-ambitious-project-to-fill-the-sky-with-flying-taxis" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">150 mph</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and charging will only take about 4 minutes. Uber has plans to test the service shortly in L.A., after successful trials in Dallas and Dubai. If all goes well, travel time in L.A.’s rush hour can decrease by a third. </span></p>
<h3><b>Airbus</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Airbus is looking to </span><a href="https://techcrunch.com/2017/10/05/airbus-on-track-to-fly-its-electric-aerial-taxi-in-2018/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">launch their CityAirBus</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in the skies for taxi service in 2018. The all-electric vertical takeoff vehicles will transport people up to </span><a href="https://techcrunch.com/2017/10/05/airbus-on-track-to-fly-its-electric-aerial-taxi-in-2018/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">80 mph</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> over congested traffic to destinations like rooftops, train stations and airports. The vehicles can carry up to 4 passengers at a time and travel up to 80 mph. In the beginning stages of its launch, Airbus plans to have a pilot on board the flights over fixed routes, but will work towards autonomous operations. </span></p>
<h3><b>Volvo</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Geely, which is the parent company that owns Volvo, recently purchased a flying-car startup, Terrafugia. The company aims to have its flying cars in operation by 2019, with a range of </span><a href="https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/cars/880770/Volvo-flying-car-Terrafugia-TFX-Geely" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">400 miles on a single charge</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and travel speed of up to 100 mph. Terrafugia already received the </span><a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/flying-cars-transition-volvo-us-tech-start-up-geely-investment-terrafugia-a8056576.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) approval</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to start flying. They are also working on their next model, the TF-X, which can fly up to 200 mph and will cost around </span><a href="https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/cars/880770/Volvo-flying-car-Terrafugia-TFX-Geely" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">EUR 180,000</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The aviation industry will see many changes in the coming years. Although steeply rising oil prices will play a major factor in the profitability of the industry, the rising demand for passenger flights, increased military spending and new innovations will lead production and create new business opportunities for 2018 and beyond.</span></p>

<p>More than a hundred years ago, the French sent a giant gift to celebrate America’s independence and to honor their friendship. The Statue of Liberty was first assembled in France, taken apart, shipped to the U.S. and then erected once more. It still stands tall, but even stronger today thanks to some important improvements made along the way.</p>
<p>As the Leaning Tower of Pisa is to Italy and the Eiffel Tower is to France, the Statue of Liberty embodies and represents America’s values of freedom and independence. Although Lady Liberty looks as smooth and stunning as her first debut, her journey was nothing short of rocky.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The statue was assembled in the U.S. in 1886. The iron and copper figure stood the test of time for almost 100 years. However, from 1982 to 1986, the statue underwent major reparations to so that Lady Liberty could make it to her centennial anniversary in 1986. It was a costly effort, and interestingly, marked one of the earliest joint efforts between the private and public sectors to fund a public project.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">What was wrong with Lady Liberty?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In short, the Statue of Liberty can be broken down into three main parts: the copper exterior (a sheet of copper that covers the entire statue), the internal skeleton or pylon made of puddled iron, and the Armature (a frame that connects the copper exterior to the internal skeleton).</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The armature is made up of iron bars, 1300 of them, weighing 20 pounds each. Due to concerns about corrosion, layers of protective materials were applied to the bars, such as coal tar, aluminum, and lead. The coating itself weathered over the years and began to trap moisture. Thus, the iron started to rust.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Engineers decided to replace the entire armature, but with what?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Four prospective materials underwent extensive testing:</span></p>
<p>1. Aluminum bronze<br />
2. Cupro-nickel<br />
3. Ferralium<br />
4. Stainless steel</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The obvious choice was stainless steel as it would not rust, but also gift builders with its elasticity, light-weight, strength, and ductility.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ten years after the repairs, in 1996, inspectors deemed the armature corrosion-resistant and it has remained so ever since. It would have been wiser and less costly to start with steel in the first place, as the engineers of the Empire State Building did, but it seems even steel could use… even more steel. </span></p>
<h2><b>A Steel on Steel Testament </b></h2>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the Big Apple, The 86-year-old Empire State Building also recently underwent enhancements. Engineers added 39 tons of steel plates onto the building’s existing steel mast (the pointy part at the top, also known as the tower) to improve its carrying capacity.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The planning for this project alone took over two years. Steelworkers, engineers, and builders had to take into account the bustling city below. High winds were another factor to consider. In the end, engineers came up with a cocoon-like encasing to be placed around the tower at the top of the building during construction to keep falling pieces in and strong winds out.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Once set inside the cocoon, workers began</span><a href="http://www.enr.com/articles/42128-how-to-add-39-tons-of-steel-to-the-top-of-the-empire-state-building" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">wielding 39 tons worth of steel bars and plates onto the tower</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The process was tedious as steel parts could only be transported into the cocoon in small pieces.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the end, the sturdier mast with a greater carrying capacity was worth the struggle.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Empire State Building was built in 1931 and was the tallest building in the world at the time. Due to its unique design, the American Society of Civil Engineers named it one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. It is also a significant part of American culture, as the Empire State Building has been featured in more than 90 movies, including “King Kong” in 1933.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Every year, the Empire State Building generates more than $100 million in revenue. About 20% of the revenue comes from the antennas attached to the 200-ft-tall steel broadcast tower. The remaining 80% is generated by the flocks of tourists that visit from all over the world, confirming the Empire State Building as an international landmark.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, it is not the only building receiving international attention and recognition.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Abu Dhabi is another country where steel lays the foundation for iconic buildings. The Capital Gate Building may not have a long history, but it is an architectural wonder. It is often compared to Italy’s Leaning Tower of Pisa, but it has four times leaner The Capital Gate leans to the west a whopping 18 degrees.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">How is this possible?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Engineers used a technique called pre-cambered core. Basically, they offset the core to counter the gravitational force created by the leaning mass of the building. The core or base of the building is a 7-foot mass of steel mesh and concrete locked down to almost 500 piles, which are drilled 100 feet into the ground. The external skeleton called a diagrid is also made of steel. These features, as well as some extensive math equations, allow the building to stand tall, at an angle.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The landmark leans in the center of the </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre complex and the Capital Centre master development</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">. It captured international attention when The Guinness Book of World Records confirmed the Capital Gate Building as the &#8220;World’s furthest leaning man-made tower” in 2010.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The list of iconic steel structures is endless&#8230;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Although the ones we discussed are just three iconic structures, it’s easy to see why steel makes up so many other buildings, statues, and memorials all over the world.  In the U.S. alone, iconic structures such as the Brooklyn Bridge, the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the Willis (Formerly Sears) Tower are all made of steel.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Steel is cheaper, more sustainable and more durable than other materials such as iron and wood.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In addition, emerging technology will only further enhance the compatibility of steel for architecture and construction. One promising area of innovation is 3D printing for buildings. </span></p>

<h2><b>Printing Steel in 3D</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The typical concrete construction process consists of:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">1. Setting up a steel/metal frame (rods) for the building<br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">2. Pouring concrete over the rods<br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">3. Formwork- using a wooden “shell” to hold the concrete in place as it dries</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The problem with this process is the formwork. Because custom-made formwork is extremely expensive and non-reusable, builders opt for standardized, block-shaped formwork. This limits design creativity on top of the economic and environmental inconvenience.</span></p>
<p><a href="http://stories.worldsteel.org/construction-building/new-way-build/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Mesh Mould</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is a digital 3D printer in the works by researchers at the</span><a href="https://www.ethz.ch/en/research.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">ETH Zürich research institute</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The printer would produce steel frameworks that are both fine and dense, so that poured concrete would not seep out before it solidifies. The developers of Mesh Mould also created a special concrete mix to accompany the steel frames. Mesh Mould would eliminate formwork completely. Not only will this make the whole construction process more sustainable, it will lower material expenses and also save time. Others have taken notice as well. Mesh Mould received the 2016 Swiss Technology Award.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Statues, building, and monuments can be made of numerous different materials. However, when exploring iconic buildings and monuments that have stood the test of time and breached scientific barriers, steel proves to be the perfect fit.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO has held its annual community service tradition, </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/posco-hosts-2017-global-volunteer-week-52-countries/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">the POSCO Global Volunteer Week</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, since 2010.  This year, from May 24 to 30, over 79,000 POSCO Group employees from 52 different countries, including Korea, Turkey, Vietnam and the U.S., rolled up their sleeves and got to work. Here&#8217;s a look at some of the highlights.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>POSCO Group in Korea</strong> </span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In Korea, POSCO Group employees made home improvements for underprivileged neighborhoods, mentored local youth and had a blast painting wall murals.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the nation’s capital of Seoul, POSCO employees cleaned up marine waste with the Clean Ocean Volunteer Group, and another group delivered freshly baked bread to the community&#8217;s elderly.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On May 30, POSCO CEO Kwon Ohjoon and over 30 employees visited </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Myeongryundang </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">of </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sungkyunkwan Munmyo</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (a Confucian shrine), to repair and replace Korean traditional paper called </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Changhoji </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">on windows and doors.</span></p>

Other volunteer groups in Gwangyang, another city in Korea where POSCO conducts business, launched a lunchbox delivery business to create jobs for the elderly and held classes for women for minority communities.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In Turkey, POSCO ASSAN TST employees opened a Korean culture school for local elementary school students in March. During Global Volunteer Week, Students got to try on traditional Korean clothing called </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">hanbok </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">and volunteers built a playground made out of recycled tires for the kindergarten students.   </span></p>

From the <a href="https://www.berlin.de/en/attractions-and-sights/3560249-3104052-memorial-to-the-murdered-jews-of-europe.en.html" target="_blank">Holocaust Memorial in Berlin</a> to the <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/staples-center-home-of-artistry-creativity/" target="_blank">Staples Center in LA</a> &#8211; their designs have a purpose. Many of us may pass a building everyday on our way to work and never notice it, while other buildings may bring out more intense feelings &#8211; regardless, they are all interconnected with our lives and with our emotions.</p>
<p><a href="http://edition.cnn.com/2015/06/30/architecture/daniel-libeskind-architecture-emotions/" target="_blank">Daniel Libeskind says</a>, “[I]n buildings that move us, there&#8217;s an element of care. It&#8217;s not a question of whether a building makes us feel good or bad. It&#8217;s about being moved. It&#8217;s something that goes very deep.”</p>
<p>Take a look at these three unique buildings that used steel in creative ways. Most architects and engineers work to hide the steel underneath the walls and floors, but these three architecture firms brought the steel to the exterior &#8211; and to dramatic effect. <h3><strong>Zaha Hadid’s Investcorp Building, Oxford University</strong></h3>
<p>The Investcorp Building, located in Oxford University’s St. Antony’s College, is part of the school’s Middle East Center. Named after the investment firm that donated £11 million to have it built, the building includes a library, classrooms, and offices. Designed by the late <a href="http://www.zaha-hadid.com/architecture/middle-east-centre-st-antonys-college/" target="_blank">Zaha Hadid</a>, considered to be one of the most famous avant-garde contemporary architects of our time, the project has evoked a multitude of emotions from those on campus.</p>

<p>Conspicuously different from the other Victorian buildings found on Oxford’s campus, the Investcorp Building has brought out supporters and detractors. Some said that it “Looks like a beached whale,” or “No, a crashed airplane.” While some of Hadid’s supporters, like the center’s director Eugene Rogan said, “Every line meant something. It bends the brain. I’m in love with this building and I can’t hide it… there’s something Daliesque about it.” <a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/architecture/zaha-hadid-s-modernist-library-inspires-shock-and-awe-in-oxford-10277247.html" target="_blank">The Independent even went so far as to say</a> that it was “undoubtedly Hadid’s most intriguing small building.”</p>

<p>Many will argue that the building does not blend in well with its surroundings on Oxford’s campus, but it is also hard to deny the precision and expertise that went into the design. Love it or hate it, Hadid’s Investcorp Building is one that will fuel debate for decades to come.</p>

<p><strong>Turkey’s Raif Dinçkök Yalova Cultural Center</strong></p>
<p>The modern Raif Dinçkök Yalova Cultural Center was designed by Istanbul’s <a href="http://www.emrearolat.com/" target="_blank">Emre Arolat Architects</a>. It is a mini-city in a box with different multi-purpose facilities inside that are connected by a vast maze of ramps and walkways.</p>
<p>Its unique exterior is made of corten steel, short for &#8220;corrosion resistance&#8221; and &#8220;tensile strength,&#8221; a type of weathering steel that has no need for painting. Over time it develops a rust-like appearance while maintaining its resistance to atmospheric corrosion.</p>

<p>The intentionally rusted facade offers a blank canvas for the city and serves to heighten expectations of what might be inside.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.archdaily.com/180305/raif-dinckok-yalova-cultural-center-emre-arolat-architects" target="_blank">Arch Daily says</a>, “The surface, which is also suitable for recycling, acts as a natural palette, containing the changes it will go through, like the color and tone changes caused by oxidation. This movement will make the relationship between the city and the building more interactive.”</p>

<h3><strong>Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles</strong></h3>
<p>Frank Gehry’s stainless steel Walt Disney Concert Hall remains one of the famous architect’s most well-known works – as well as one of the most famous buildings in LA. <em>Architectural Digest</em> <a href="http://www.architecturaldigest.com/gallery/best-of-frank-gehry-slideshow/all" target="_blank">called Gehry the “most important architect of our age</a>,” and <a href="http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/arts/disneyhall/la-et-cm-disney-hall-hawthorne-dto-htmlstory.html" target="_blank">the LA Times said</a> that “Disney Hall accomplishes all the things Gehry has become famous for and all the things he was supposed to be incapable of doing.” The stainless steel jutting out into the landscape is both striking but soft.</p>

<p>Some patrons have argued that entry into the hall is rather abrupt as one must move from the sidewalk directly into the lobby, with little fanfare. Then, having entered the hall, even the lobby is considered “narrow and asymmetrical.” But Gehry seemingly did this on purpose “in an effort to <a href="http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/arts/disneyhall/la-et-cm-disney-hall-hawthorne-dto-htmlstory.html" target="_blank">save the architectural and emotional payoff</a> for the moment when you walk into the auditorium itself.” He realized that this building was to be a monument to the music and musicians that played there, and so he wanted the focus to be on that aspect &#8211; minimizing the rest for emotional effect.</p>

																<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Taking home a record 7 Golden Globes and landing 14 Academy Award nominations, <em>La La Land</em> is the clear favorite in this year’s movie award season. Taking a distinctly modern turn on an old Hollywood style musical, <em>La La Land</em> blends fantasy and reality as it follows the romance of Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling).  The film plays out amidst the backdrop of Los Angeles as the couple takes a ride through some of the city’s most notable landmarks.</p>
<p>Some of these landmarks date back more than 100 years, but they have endured. Go behind the scenes to see how director Damien Chazelle brought these classic buildings to life in the fantastical song and dance numbers of <em>La La Land</em>.</p>

<h2><strong>l Griffith Observatory</strong></h2>
<p>In <em>La La Land</em>, Griffith Observatory, and the park where it sits, is the setting for some of the more memorable scenes. Mia and Sebastian’s first dance number took place in Griffith Park on a road overlooking the city (see image below), and the observatory can be seen later in one of the couple&#8217;s various date sequences.</p>

<p>The Griffith Observatory opened in 1935 on land that was donated to the city of Los Angeles by Colonel Griffith J. Griffith in 1896. Sitting atop Mt. Hollywood, the observatory offers views of downtown LA, the Pacific Ocean, and the famous Hollywood sign. Visitors can access <a href="https://kr.discoverlosangeles.com/blog/griffith-observatory-los-angeles" target="_blank" rel="noopener">exhibitions on astronomy and space while also enjoying access to public telescopes and the Samuel Oschin Planetarium</a>.</p>

<p>With construction starting in June 1933 in the midst of the Great Depression, designers found materials and labor were cheap. The concrete structure was supported by a steel structure, while the three domes were raised “<a href="http://scalar.usc.edu/hc/hugo-ballins-los-angeles/griffith-observatory-about-this-commission-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">by wrapping copper sheets around steel frames.</a>” The observatory has stood the test of time, hosting millions of visitors since its opening in 1935. However, in 2002 the observatory temporarily closed for restorations. The $93 million renovation retained the art deco exterior while updating much of the interior, including the planetarium.</p>

<p>Due to its long history and iconic status in Los Angeles, the Griffith Observatory has appeared in many films and TV shows. In addition to <em>La La Land</em>, it can be seen in <em>Rebel without a Cause</em> (1955), <em>The Terminator</em> (1984), and even <em>The Simpsons</em>.</p>

<h2><strong>l </strong><strong>Watts Towers</strong></h2>
<p>During one of the film’s montage sequences, Mia and Sebastian visit Watts Towers &#8211; a collection of 17 sculptures made of steel, metal, and concrete reaching heights of over 30 meters. Starting in 1921 and continuing for 33 years until 1954, Italian immigrant Simon Rodia made these sculptures using steel rebar, concrete, and wire mesh. He decorated them using found objects, mostly refuse, such as the green glass from cola bottles, seashells, and blue milk of magnesia bottles.</p>

<p>At age 75, Rodia decided to give up on the project and go live with his sister in northern California. The city of LA attempted to have the towers removed due to safety issues; however, the art community convinced them to <a href="http://www.discoverlosangeles.com/blog/watts-towers-story-la-icon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">conduct a stress test first</a>. Steel cables were connected to each tower as a crane attempted to move them from their foundations. The steel and concrete structures held firm with the crane ultimately buckling under pressure &#8211; forcing the city of LA to acknowledge their safety and keeping them in place for the public to enjoy.</p>

<h2><strong>l </strong><strong>Colorado Street Bridge</strong></h2>
<p>Sebastian and Mia also visited the famous Colorado Street Bridge, allowing audiences to revisit one of the older landmarks of Los Angeles. Finished in 1913, the Colorado Street Bridge was thought to be the highest concrete bridge at that time. Its beautiful arches sit 150 feet above the Arroya Seco and have provided a romantic setting for many couples.</p>

<p>When construction began in 1912, <a href="https://www.kcet.org/shows/lost-la/colorado-street-bridge-at-100-the-birth-of-a-pasadena-landmark" target="_blank" rel="noopener">engineers faced several hurdles</a>.  The slopes on both sides were steep and the arroyo bed was seasonally wet; however, engineers created a work-around by curving the bridge 52 degrees to the south and using massive archways to help reinforce the concrete structure.</p>
<p>To support the concrete bridge, the designers <a href="https://www.nps.gov/nr/travel/route66/colorado_street_bridge_pasadena.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">used a spandrel construction </a>with support columns holding up the arched ribs of the bridge. In total, over 11,000 cubic yards of concrete and 600 tons of steel were used at a cost of $235,000.</p>

<p>The bridge was used to connect Pasadena to LA, but by the 1930s it was already overrun and insufficient for the city’s needs. After falling into disrepair in the late 80’s, and eventually closed after the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, the bridge reopened to the public in 1993 after renovations.</p>
<p>Today, the bridge is open to cars and pedestrians. Visitors can come and admire the design, concrete, and steel that have kept this bridge in use for over 100 years.</p>
<p>With award season in high gear, <em>La La Land</em> is poised to bring home quite a few statuettes. Behind the songs, love, and heartbreak sits the city of Los Angeles bathed in bright lights and decorated with some of the most beautiful buildings of 20th century America. Thanks to the steel holding them together, these structures have endured time, earthquakes, and multitudes visitors.</p>

Dashing through the city on his horse with his soldiers with his eyes staring at front-line, a grim face, and heroic vigor, the name of this general is Saladin, ruler of the medieval Islamic world.</p>

<p>His name may not sound so familiar. It is not as well-known as Genghis Khan, the ruler who laid the cornerstone of The Mongol Empire, but Saladin is still recognized as a beloved historical figure among Muslims. He is the one who fought for the Holy Land of Jerusalem on behalf of Islam during The Crusades, a fierce 200-year-war between European Christianity and the Islamic world in the 11-13<sup>th </sup>centuries.</p>
<p>A noticeable part in the front of the statue of Saladin is the sword that he is holding with his right hand, pointing it up towards the sky. It may seem like an ordinary sword, but this blade, also known as the Damascus blade, contains an interesting history in relation to iron. Let us appreciate a part of the history of iron, through following the footsteps of this sacred weapon.</p>

<p><strong>An invincible sword made of Wootz steel, captivates everyone’s heart</strong></p>

<p>Firstly, one cannot help to wonder how the sword ended up with the name of Syria’s capital. It does not have obvious ties to Damascus, and its origins actually bring it back to ancient India.</p>
<p>Take a moment to look at the column in the photo above. It is made with steel, weighs six tons and measures 10 meters high. Judging from its pristine condition, which does not have a lot of rust, one may think it was made rather recently; however, it was erected 1700 years ago, during India’s Gupta Dynasty. Many scholars have conducted investigations on its composition to solve its mysteries, but they were not able to discover a definite reason as to how it has been able to remain rust-less.</p>
<p>This column, called “the iron pillar of Delhi”, is made with something called Wootz steel. Because of its durability, even to hammering, Wootz steel was mainly used for making sharp blades. It is unreasonable to think swords made with such an outstanding material to remain only in India; it was exported worldwide, to Russia, China and even to Persia. Eventually, swords made with Wootz steel captivated the hearts of the Damascus people in Syria.</p>
<p>But why is this specific sword called the “Damascus blade”, and not the “Indian sword” or the “Wootz steel sword?”</p>
<p>Damascus used to be the trade center of West Asia. Wootz steel blades were exported through the city and due to its high demands, it is predicted that a shortage in supply shortage must have occurred. At around 300 B.C., the spread of the Wootz steel blade began when merchants started to produce swords directly by hiring artisans. That is when the storied blade got its name as the “Damascus blade” &#8211; born and raised by India, but rising to fame only after it reached Damascus, Syria.</p>

<p><strong>Strong and beautiful, the Damascus sword</strong></p>

<p>Beginning with its manufacturing process, the Damascus blade was an extraordinary tool. While its blade is solid due to a mixture of carbon that allows it to maintain an even level of solidity, its body has a distinct pattern due to differences in carbon distribution that enables it to be shock absorbing. That is why a writer once described the sword as “a shining wave in a breezy pond.”</p>
<p>Because of its strength and beauty, the Damascus blade was a weapon coveted by many. One person who especially wanted one of the valuable swords was Mutawakkil, a caliph of Abbasid who ruled the Islamic world from the 8<sup>th</sup> to 13<sup>th</sup> centuries. He had heard of its reputation from southern India where it was being produced at the time, and eventually succeeded in obtaining this legendary weapon, after various attempts and paying a huge sum of money – only to lead him to his death.</p>
<p>He assigned his adjutant Bagyr as a keeper of the sword, and it just so happened Mutawakkil’s subordinate was planning a revolt against his leader. Bagyr later murdered Mutawakkil with the Damascus blade, his most precious treasure – ending his quest for the sword in an ironic fate.</p>

<p><strong>A weapon that defeated the Crusades</strong></p>

<p>It was not until the Crusades that the fame of the Damascus blade spread to Europe from Asia; it was Saladin’s army’s use of the Damascus blade that pierced crusaders’ thick armor and severed their swords in one swing.</p>
<p>However, there is another reason why this particular sword is incredible; it is not only strong and sharp, but also light and slim. One may think that the sword featured in Saladin’s statue is undersized. It’s almost hard to believe that a hero who once ruled over the world was wielded such a small sword, but not everything that is bigger is necessarily better. Saladin’s army was much more advanced in battle because of their mobility, than the crusaders who used heavy swords.</p>
<p>There are some urban legends of the lithe and powerful blade that exist from its heyday. When King Richard I, who lead the Crusades, showed off his sword, Saladin responded by throwing a piece of silk over his Damascus blade, which apparently finely sliced through the cloth.</p>
<p>There were also rumors such as that the devil taught humans how to make the Damascus blade, and while one can only wonder how reliable this tale to be, it surely reaffirms the blade’s reputation as tremendous weapon.</p>
<p>The Crusades eventually ended in defeat, and from an Islamic perspective, the Damascus blade is considered to be what successfully prevented the invasion of Christianity.</p>
<p>Since then, the Damascus blade has fought in battlefields around the world. But around 250 years ago, the manufacturing technique faded from the generations of artisans, and since then, it has not been restored. Even though we develop other weapons of mass destruction using steel at this day and age, the craft of making the historically significant blade has evaporated into a memory.</p>
<p>Will there be another day in the future when we will be able to appreciate the Damascus blade’s legendary pattern of “a shining wave in a breezy pond” once again?</p>

<p><strong>Early Ships</strong></p>

<p>In 1940, the construction of the world&#8217;s first all-welded ship, the SS Exchequer, was completed in Mississippi, US. The steel plates of the cargo vessel&#8217;s hull were welded end-to-end rather than overlapped and riveted—a technique that revolutionized shipbuilding at the time.</p>
<p>Since then, ships have been made almost exclusively of welded steel, thanks to the material’s affordability and lightweight properties.</p>

<p><strong>Flood Protection</strong></p>
<p>Steel plays a crucial role in protecting our lands from floods. Its durability and sheer strength make it an ideal underwater barrier to protect cities that are at high risk of flooding.</p>

<p>The <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-26133660" target="_blank">Thames Barrier</a>, for example, fortifies central London from floods caused by tidal surges. Weighing in at 3,700 tons, the barrier is made up of 10 steel gates and stretches 520 meters across the Thames River, the UK&#8217;s most famous waterway.</p>

<p><strong>Artificial Reefs</strong></p>
<p>Hurricane-resistant steel has been used to create hundreds of wave-resistant barriers that surround the shorelines of the Caribbean, American Gulf Coast and Southeast Asia.</p>
<p>Some of these steel reefs have been designed to force waves to break offshore and deposit their energy in a different area than directly on the coastline, thus protecting beaches. Others hold in sediment on beaches to prevent coastal erosion, while still others promote water activities like surfing.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Marine Life Preservation</strong></p>
<p>What do you get when you toss some 25,000 decommissioned <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/recycled-steel-changing-way-world-uses-metal/" target="_blank">New York subway cars</a> into the ocean? A marine life habitat, of course.</p>
<p>Primarily consisting of steel, the Redbird Reef off the eastern coast of the United States has functioned as a source of sanctuary and food for marine life, offering more viable conditions for the growth of nutrients and organisms than the sand bottom.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, other materials like steel slag have been used to <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/making-waves-in-ocean-conservation/" target="_blank">promote marine forestation</a> in damaged marine ecosystems.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Powering Renewable Energy</strong></p>
<p>Steel is an essential material used in the development of tidal energy solutions worldwide, from the poles which secure turbines to the ground to their rotating blades. Considering the fact that <a href="http://www.delivered.dhl.com/en/articles/2016/09/energy-the-changing-tide.html" target="_blank">tidal energy</a> could eventually satisfy more than 20 percent of global energy demand, steel plays a key role in unlocking the renewable energy capacity of our oceans.</p>
<p>Similarly, steel makes up around 80 percent of all materials used to construct <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/steel-solutions-in-wind-power/" target="_blank">wind turbines</a> that emit minimal carbon dioxide when producing energy.</p>

<p><strong>Megaships</strong></p>
<p>When it comes to building the world’s biggest megaships, there’s no material as favored by engineers than steel.</p>
<p>Take the Royal Caribbean International’s Harmony of the Seas cruise ship, for example. It was constructed with 227,000 tons of steel—enough material to build 31 Eiffel Towers. Standing upright, it is 210 feet tall, more than three times the height of London’s Olympic Stadium, and is nearly as long as four soccer fields combined.</p>

<p><strong>Undersea Tunnels</strong></p>
<p>Noting the comparable advantages <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/water-world-the-past-present-and-future-of-undersea-tunnels/" target="_blank">undersea tunnels</a> have over bridges, like their ability to divert traffic and not be affected by external factors, city planners began incorporating them into city layouts in the late 1800s.</p>

<p>The first notion of the Channel Tunnel, which connects England and France, was proposed in 1802, but didn’t become a reality until the 1960s. With 400 trains carrying 50,000 passengers and 54,000 tons of freight passing through it every day, steel reinforces other materials to keep the tunnel strong and sturdy.</p>

<p><strong>Shipping</strong></p>
<p>Ninety percent of global cargo is carried by sea. Because the size of steel ships and containers allows for enormous loads to be transported in a single trip, the majority of the 17 million shipping containers currently in use are made from steel.</p>
<p>Included among these shipping giants are <a href="http://www.worldsteel.org/media-centre/Steel-news/Triple-E-Container-Ships.html" target="_blank">Maersk’s Triple-E</a>, the largest cargo ship in the world. It can fit approximately 18,000 shipping containers—enough space for 36,000 cars or 108 million pairs of sneakers!</p>

<p>Steel has the ability to withstand corrosion and avoid oxidizing reactions such as rust. It is also lightweight enough that it can be fast and effective in maneuvering underwater. As a result, the <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/submarines-oceans-steel-whales/" target="_blank">submarine’s steel body</a> has enabled it to accomplish extraordinary expeditions, including James Cameron’s DEEPSEA CHALLENGER’s voyage to the deepest known part of the Earth.</p>

<p><strong>Connecting the World</strong></p>
<p>Steel is essential in the construction of canals. It is used to form the structure which supports the entire operation and is also utilized to make the locks so that they are tough enough to withstand extreme forces like water pressure.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/steel-wonders-of-the-world-the-panama-canal/" target="_blank">Panama Canal</a>, for instance, is the largest canal in the world, with around 14,000 ships passing through it annually. Thanks to a system of large steel locks, the canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.</p>
