																<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO recently established joint ventures with Huayou Cobalt to enter the world’s biggest lithium-ion battery market in China. This partnership allows POSCO to produce precursors and cathode materials in Tongxiang, located in the Zhejiang Province of China. At the shareholders’ general meeting held on the Jan 24 at the POSCO Center POSCO finally approved the contract for the two joint ventures &#8211; one for the production of precursors, and the other for cathode materials. (A precursor is made by combining cobalt, nickel and manganese in a blast furnace to manufacture cathode materials. The final product of cathode materials is a combination of precursor and lithium.) </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Huayou Cobalt is one of the world’s biggest mining companies that can produce about 50 percent of the cobalt required for manufacturing lithium-ion batteries worldwide. They also have their own nickel mine in addition to a cobalt mine.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The joint venture for precursor production is made up of 60 percent of investments by Huayou Cobalt that can supply cobalt, nickel and manganese, and 40 percent by POSCO. 60 percent of investments for the joint venture for cathode material production comes from POSCO who owns the high-grade cathode material production technology and 40 percent of investments come from Huayou Cobalt. The joint ventures will be operating production lines for 4,600 tons of precursors and cathode materials a year starting from the second half of 2020. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Through these joint ventures, POSCO can now secure its market position in China by directly manufacturing and selling cathode materials locally. In addition, it can gain a competitive edge by securing a stable supply of not only precursors but also materials such as cobalt, nickel and manganese for POSCO ESM’s cathode materials plant in Gumi. Huayou Cobalt can expand its business in manufacturing and sales of cathode materials in addition to that of raw materials.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As the eco-friendly policies of the world continue to be tightened, the demand for electric vehicles, industrial energy storage systems (ESS) and IT bulk batteries has increased rapidly. Thus, the market for cathode materials, which are essential materials for lithium-ion batteries, is also expected to quadruple from 210,000 tons in 2016 to 860,000 tons in 2020.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Accordingly, the price of cobalt, one of the most expensive materials, tripled in the last two years, followed by the price of nickel and manganese. This explains why a stable supply of materials is essential for profitability. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO’s lithium-ion battery material business is headed for future growth, and is expected to gain increased momentum with the joint ventures for precursors and cathode materials. POSCO completed its carbon lithium plant PosLX at Gwangyang Steelworks last year after 7 years of developing its own proprietary technology of directly extracting lithium in 2010. It is currently under commercial production. </span></p>

<h2><b>1. #Winning &#8211; competitiveness and sustainability</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO was recently named the world&#8217;s</span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/named-worlds-competitive-steelmaker-wsd/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;"> most competitive steelmaker</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> for the eighth consecutive year by </span><a href="http://www.worldsteeldynamics.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">World Steel Dynamics</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (WSD). POSCO again took home the gold with the highest scores in five categories including innovative technology, cost reduction, skill level of labor, restructuring and investment environment. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Not only did POSCO come out on top for competitiveness, the company was ranked 35th among the “Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World in 2017,” by Toronto-based magazine and research firm </span><a href="http://www.corporateknights.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Corporate Knights</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The list was announced in early 2017 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. This is the third consecutive year POSCO made the list with outstanding scores in safety, environment and the salary levels of employees. </span></p>
<h2><b>2. Joining the trillion club</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO entered the trillion club twice in 2017 as it recorded USD 1.283 billion (KRW 1.365 trillion) of operating profits in the first quarter, and USD 1.0581 billion (KRW 1.1257 trillion) in the third quarter based on its consolidated operating profit. Even in the midst of global oversupply and governments opting for protectionist policies, POSCO’s profits were unscathed. Much of the credit is owed to the company’s steel and non-steel affiliates overseas with strong sales performances. The consolidated debt-to-equity ratio was the lowest since 2010 and the non-consolidated debt-to-equity ratio was at its lowest ever. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To add, international credit rating agency </span><a href="https://www.standardandpoors.com/en_US/web/guest/home" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">S&amp;P</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> upgraded </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/sp-upgrades-poscos-outlook-stable/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO&#8217;s BBB-plus credit rating outlook to “stable” </span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">last February, and </span><a href="https://www.moodys.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Moody&#8217;s</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> also upgraded POSCO’s long-term corporate credit rating outlook to </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/moodys-upgrades-poscos-credit-rating-outlook-positive/ ?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">“positive” on October 26</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p>
<h2><b>3. Everything’s bigger in&#8230;POSCO</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Last June, after 102 days of repair, <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/posco-gets-smart-pohang-blast-furnace-no-3/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pohang Blast Furnace No.3</a> became the world’s fifth-largest blast furnace. Its internal volume expanded from 4350㎥ to 5600㎥, allowing the super-sized blast furnace to put out 15,000 tons of molten metal daily. POSCO currently operates five super-sized blast furnaces, or blast furnaces sized 5500㎥ or larger. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO further upgraded Pohang Blast Furnace No.3 by adding in AI capabilities. It is now equipped with smart technology that can control the internal state of the blast furnace automatically, and smart sensors can now predict accidents before they happen, extending the lifespan of the furnace. Furthermore, POSCO plans to collect big data from the blast furnace and use it to develop fully smart blast furnaces in the future. </span></p>
<h2><b>4. The smarter the better</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Since his taking up the CEO position in 2014, POSCO CEO Ohjoon Kwon has repeatedly expressed his vision for securing future competitiveness through smart solutions. The company even started a smartization training course for employees and held the <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/posco-expands-smartization-clients-affiliates/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Smart POSCO Forum 2017</a> last July to share its insights and progress with clients and affiliates.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Moreover, POSCO also supported a smart talent training project customized for SMEs. The program included job training for AI and big data application technologies. Going forward, POSCO plans to build a “Smart Industry” to increase steel competitiveness and create new business opportunities with new, smart technologies.</span></p>

<h2><b>5. Getting in on electric vehicles</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The market for electric vehicles (EVs) is an exciting one with so many companies investing in new technologies. POSCO also hopes to extend its customized material and technology solutions to EV manufacturers. Last October, the company held the </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/posco-automakers-solution-partner-age-electric-vehicles/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Global EV Materials Forum</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to showcase four of its core business areas: lightweight bodies, batteries, motors and charging infrastructure. More than 380 clients took part in the forum to learn about emerging trends and POSCO’s products and services including POSCO GIGA STEEL and commercially produced lithium batteries for EVs. </span></p>

<h2><b>6. POSCO’s new marketing approach</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For the first time ever, POSCO created and aired a TV commercial highlighting a specific product, instead of its corporate brand. This marks POSCO’s first B2C marketing effort and features the company’s innovative auto steel, POSCO GIGA STEEL. The commercial compares POSCO GIGA STEEL to aluminum, another widely-used lightweight material in a visual demonstration so that everyday drivers can better understand the benefits of a stronger yet lighter material. </span></p>

<h2><b>7. Going for 10 million tons of automotive steel</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On April 26, </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/posco-completes-automotive-steel-plant-exclusively-posco-giga-steel/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO completed 7CGL</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, a new steel production facility in Gwangyang, Korea, designed exclusively for the production of POSCO GIGA STEEL. 7CGL has an annual capacity of 500,000 tons and is the world&#8217;s first plant capable of producing both 1.5 giga-level galva-annealed (GA) and galvanized (GI) steel sheets. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In addition, POSCO managed to reduce investment funds and secure cost competitiveness by designing and constructing 7CGL’s core facilities based on accumulated facility technologies and operating know-how. The 7CGL is POSCO&#8217;s 12th plant exclusively for automotive steel sheets, and POSCO aims to sell 10 million tons of automotive steel in 2018 globally.  </span></p>
<h2><b>8. Setting new records with high manganese</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO became the first company in the world to commercialize the technology for producing high manganese using fusible ferroalloys. The technology took KRW 5.5 billion of research and development costs and four years to complete.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The core part of POSCO&#8217;s high manganese production process is PosLM (POSCO Liquid Manganese), a special holding furnace that stores manganese ferroalloys in a fusible state. POSCO’s technology <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/posco-cuts-production-time-half-manganese-steel/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reduces the production time</a> for high manganese steel by more than 50 percent as well as increases slab production efficiency. PosLM was jointly researched and developed by the Institute of Technology and POSCO M-tech. </span></p>
<h2><b>9. Bringing home the lithium </b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On February 7, POSCO opened its <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/steel-company-changing-rechargeable-battery-industry/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank" rel="noopener">PosLX</a> (POSCO Lithium Extraction) plant with an annual capacity of 2,500 tons. The plant is the first plant in Korea capable of commercial lithium production. The technology took 7 years to perfect, but it was well worth it. The production process for high purity lithium now takes just 3 months, compared to the previous 12 to 18 months. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the past, Korean manufacturers imported the entire quantity of lithium they needed. With POSCO’s PosLX plant, partners now have access to a local supply of lithium. Moreover, POSCO plans to use lithium phosphate extracted from wasted secondary batteries as raw materials, in keeping with the company’s sustainability standards. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO will continue building on a successful 2017 in the new year, by tackling new challenges and continuing to provide its partners with customized and optimal solutions in all business areas. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Even though EVs make up about 1 percent of total new car sales in the U.S., EVs are on a steady, steep path upwards. According to a </span><a href="https://about.bnef.com/electric-vehicle-outlook/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">report by Bloomberg New Energy Finance</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, EVs will make up 54 percent of new car sales by 2040, and by 2029, EVs will be cheaper to buy than gasoline and diesel-fueled cars. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The figures are significant and will translate into a sharp increase in demand for rechargeable batteries and their materials. </span></p>

<h2><b>The Evolution of EV Batteries</b></h2>

Batteries are made up of 3 main components. The anode, or negative electrodes, the cathode, or positive electrodes and some type of electrolyte through which the electrodes travel to release chemical energy.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The first rechargeable battery, lead-acid battery, was invented in </span><a href="http://www.visualcapitalist.com/evolution-of-battery-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">1859 by a physicist named Gaston Plante</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Lead dioxide was the cathode material used, and lead was the anode material with a liquid solution of sulphuric acid and water as the electrolyte. The materials were affordable and the battery was applied to many early models of EVs, including early models of the </span><a href="https://www.tesla.com/models" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tesla Model S</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Another widely used battery that came after the lead-acid battery is the nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery developed at the </span><a href="https://www.battelle.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Battelle-Geneva Research Center</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in 1967. Nickel hydroxide was used as the cathode material while a hydrogen-absorbing alloy was used as the anode material. A liquid solution served as electrolytes. The research for NiMH batteries was extensive, and funded jointly by Daimler-Benz and Volkswagen AG. The batteries were also applied to many EV models such as the Toyota Prius, prior to 2015. </span></p>
<h2><b>The Advent of Lithium-Ion Batteries</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The introduction of lithium-ion batteries was a game-changer. </span><a href="http://www.economist.com/node/1176209" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sony first introduced them in 1991</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, and today, most EVs have them, including the </span><a href="http://fortune.com/2016/08/24/tesla-100kwh-battery-pack/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tesla Model 3</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The batteries consist of lithium-cobalt oxide cathodes, graphite anodes and the electrolyte is usually a solution of lithium salt and an organic solvent, though some automakers are experimenting with solid-state electrolytes. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Compared to its predecessors, lithium-ion batteries have the highest amount of stored energy and specific power, which is kind of like horsepower for electric cars. As a result of improved technology and lower costs, lithium-ion batteries are projected to make up </span><a href="http://www.visualcapitalist.com/explaining-surging-demand-lithium-ion-batteries/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">70 percent of the total rechargeable battery market by 2025</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, which will be worth roughly USD 112 billion. </span></p>
<h2><b>Good as Gold</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It is estimated that every 1 percent increase of EVs in the auto market will result in an additional </span><a href="http://www.visualcapitalist.com/critical-ingredients-fuel-battery-boom/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">70,000 tons of lithium demand LCE per year</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In 2016, Australia topped the list for the most lithium produced with </span><a href="https://investingnews.com/daily/resource-investing/energy-investing/lithium-investing/lithium-producing-countries/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">14,300 metric tons</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. China and Zimbabwe are also top contenders producing 2000 and 900 metric tons in 2016, respectively. Then, there are the South American countries of Argentina, Chile, and Bolivia, also referred to as the “lithium triangle,” and home to 75 percent of the world’s lithium supply. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Does that mean the world has enough lithium to fuel the cars of tomorrow? The answer is yes, but there aren’t enough mines to produce them. In order to prevent environmental damage and the exploitation of unprotected workers, lithium producers have to get smart about lithium mining and production. </span></p>

<h2><b>POSCO’s Lithium Production  </b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Starting in 2010, POSCO and the Research Institute of Industrial Science &amp; Technology (RIST) teamed up to develop a chemically based lithium extraction technology. The innovation cut down extraction time from up to </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/posco-innovation-shapes-lithium-market/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">18 months down to between 8 hours and 1 month</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, delivering a purity rate of 99.9 percent. The recovery rate of lithium also increased to over 80 percent. POSCO is the world’s first corporation to commercialize the technology. </span></p>

It received the highest points for five categories: technology innovation, cost reduction, labor proficiency, restructuring and investment environment. Also, according to </span><a href="https://www.worldsteel.org/en/dam/jcr:0474d208-9108-4927-ace8-4ac5445c5df8/World+Steel+in+Figures+2017.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">World Steel Figures 2017</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, POSCO is the 5th largest steel producer in the world. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO continues to contribute to the growing steel industry by producing large amounts of high-quality steel for its partners, and has its sights on non-steel businesses as well. The continued efforts to stay ahead of global trends, provide solutions to partners as well as to produce the highest quality steel are what keep POSCO in the top ranks.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here are 6 more memorable highlights from 2017 so far.</span></p>
<h2><b>1. POSCO&#8217;s First Lithium Extraction Plant</b></h2>
<p>On February 7th, POSCO opened its first lithium extraction plant, <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/koreas-first-lithium-production-plant/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">PosLX</a> at Gwangyang Works in Korea. It is expected to produce 2500 tons of lithium carbonate per year, making POSCO the first company to produce lithium on a commercial scale in Korea.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Traditionally, the process of extracting lithium takes 12 to 18 months. In comparison, POSCO’s new, sustainable technology only requires as little as 8 hours up to a maximum of one month to extract high-purity lithium. The materials produced at PosLX will supply LG Chem, Samsung SDI and POSCO ESM, a subsidiary company that specializes in cathode materials for secondary batteries.</span></p>
<h2><b>2. Leading Supplier of Electric Steel Plates</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On February 20, POSCO opened its newly-expanded, </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/7-ways-posco-building-sustainable-world/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">non-oriented silicon steel facility</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> for producing environmentally-friendly electric vehicle drive motors. The expansion increased POSCO’s output of non-oriented silicon steel (Hyper NO) from 80,000 to 160,000 tons, making POSCO the leading supplier of electric steel plates both domestically and internationally. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The demand for environmentally friendly vehicles is growing, and with it the demand for top-grade electric steel plates. In 2020, the projected demand for such parts will reach more than 1 million tons. POSCO has its eyes on the market, aiming to develop high-quality, customized materials for electric vehicle manufacturers.</span></p>
<h2><b>3. Release of POSCO’s GIGA STEEL Ad</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In March, POSCO ran a nationwide TV ad for </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/posco-giga-steel-goes-beyond-limits-traditional-lightweight-materials/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO GIGA STEEL</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in Korea to showcase the superiority of POSCO&#8217;s next-generation automotive steel material. This is the first time POSCO put out a specific steel product and not the company brand at the forefront of an ad campaign. In order to convey the strength and light weight of the product, the advertisement included a strength test comparing GIGA STEEL to aluminum. The test proved POSCO GIGA STEEL to be over three times stronger than aluminum. </span></p>

<h2><b>4. Commercialization of a High Manganese Steel Production Technology </b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In April, POSCO commercialized the world&#8217;s first high manganese steel production process technology using molten manganese ferroalloy (FeMn). This technology takes place at </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/steel-makes-circular-economy-go-round/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">PosLM </span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">(POSCO Liquid Manganese), a heat insulation facility that can store high-purity molten ferromanganese alloy. The technology boosts profitability by reducing the processing time by half and increasing production efficiency by more than 10 percent using a non-solid type of molten iron.</span></p>

<h2><b>5.  Completion of 7CGL for POSCO GIGA STEEL</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On April 26, POSCO completed the world&#8217;s first steel plate factory specifically for GIGA STEEL. </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/posco-completes-automotive-steel-plant-exclusively-posco-giga-steel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">7CGL</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, which has an annual production capacity of 500,000 tons, is attracting attention as the world&#8217;s first factory to produce both GA (hot-dip galvannealed) and GI (hot-dip galvanized) steel plates among 1.5-class automobiles. POSCO secured its position as a global automotive steel plate maker through the completion of 7CGL, its 12th steel plate factory. POSCO has been able to reduce investment costs and secure cost competitiveness by carrying out both factory design and construction internally.</span></p>

<h2><b>6. Completion of POSCO’s Steel Forming Laboratory</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On May 11, POSCO completed their </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/posco-completes-construction-new-steel-forming-laboratory/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Steel Forming Laboratory at the POSCO’s Global R&amp;D Center</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in Songdo, Korea, built to provide customized support for partners. POSCO is building a one-stop development system from technology development to production verification. At the core of this program is the advanced customer-oriented research infrastructure that can evaluate products in advance and develop leading technologies in a production environment similar to that of POSCO’s customers. This development will further strengthen POSCO’s solution marketing 2.0.</span></p>

Central to this are rechargeable batteries that can be used in electric grid storage units, smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles. These products are pushing global lithium supply to its limits, forcing innovations in lithium production technologies, sources, and battery development.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Below we take a closer look at POSCO’s recent developments in lithium extraction and rechargeable battery production. Technological innovations have helped POSCO emerge as a leader in the industry as it seeks to make each step of the process more sustainable, more affordable, and less wasteful.</span></p>
<h2><b>POSCO Innovates Lithium Extraction and Production </b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Over 94% of the global lithium supply comes from </span><a href="https://www.dakotaminerals.com.au/index.php/lithium/lithium-supply-demand" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">just three places</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">: South America (44%), Australia (36%), and China (14%). This is because most lithium is found in naturally occurring brines at high altitudes and with little rainfall. Brines are underground reservoirs of dissolved salts containing elements such as lithium, potassium, and sodium. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To extract lithium from these brines, the salt water must be pumped to the surface into evaporation pools. Once on the surface, the brine is concentrated through solar evaporation techniques and then processed to remove impurities and separate the lithium &#8211; a process which can take anywhere from 12-18 months.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lithium can also be extracted from hard rock like spodumene. This process is much faster than extraction from brine; however, it is also </span><a href="https://www.thebalance.com/lithium-production-2340123" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">much more expensive</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (up to double the cost) and requires a wide range of hydrometallurgical processes. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Realizing the potential growth of the lithium market, POSCO began to develop new extraction technologies in 2010. This new chemically-based lithium extraction technology is able to reduce extraction time while also improving efficiency and reliance on overseas imports. The first pilot program began in 2013, and in February of this year, POSCO became the world’s first corporation to commercialize chemically-based lithium extraction technology.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While traditional lithium extraction takes anywhere from 12-18 months, POSCO’s new method shortens the time frame to anywhere from </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/posco-innovation-shapes-lithium-market/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">eight hours to one month</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> while also offering a purity rate of 99.9% and increasing the lithium recovery rate to over 80%. Also, typical brine extraction by evaporation is a resource heavy process, and POSCO’s advancements help to make it a much more sustainable venture, using less water and resources.   </span></p>
<h2><b>Finding Alternative Sources of Lithium</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The electric car industry is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years. By 2040 it is expected that electric vehicles (EV) will have up to </span><a href="https://www.dakotaminerals.com.au/index.php/lithium/lithium-supply-demand" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">47% penetration with consumers</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. EVs powered by rechargeable batteries will put an added burden on the already stretched lithium supply. Therefore, efforts to expand lithium sources are under way in order to meet the growing demand. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Today, brine and spodumene are most often used and there have been efforts to process lithium from clays. While that process has not yet been commercialized, last month </span><a href="https://www.businessnews.com.au/article/Lithium-Australia-extracts-99-Lithium-from-Mexican-clays" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lithium Australia successfully extracted 94% to 99% lithium</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> from clay deposits in Mexico. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Also, earlier this year </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/koreas-first-lithium-production-plant/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO opened its PosLX plant</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, which is expected to produce 2,500 tons of lithium carbonate per year. That amount is enough to manufacture about 70 million laptop batteries. What is unique about PosLX is that they are currently obtaining their lithium phosphate, a raw material of lithium carbonate, by extracting it from wasted rechargeable batteries. In extending the life cycle of these dead batteries, POSCO is helping to make an already sustainable energy source even more eco-friendly. </span></p>
<h2><b>More Sustainable Battery Production</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In addition to POSCO’s endeavors to find more sustainable ways to produce lithium, they are also becoming directly involved in battery production. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO Chemtech has already expanded its production capacity to 6,000 tons per year, but with the newly announced plant, it will have the capacity to produce 30,000 tons per year with over KRW 200 billion in sales. Also, since the beginning of this year, POSCO has been </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/posco-increases-investments-cathode-materials-business/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">mass-producing PG-NCM</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (POSCO Gradient Nickel Cobalt Manganese), the high-capacity cathode material for low-speed electric vehicles. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">From smartphones to cars, the future will be powered by lithium-ion batteries, and as more and more industries come to rely on these rechargeable batteries, advancements in lithium production are crucial in order to keep greener forms of energy available and affordable. 																<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/ceo-kwon-elected-another-term/" target="_blank"><span style="font-weight: 400;">After his nomination in January</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, POSCO CEO Ohjoon Kwon was officially reappointed to a second three-year term as CEO at the 49th general meeting of shareholders on March 10 at POSCO Center. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In addition, President In-hwan Oh and Vice President Jeong-woo Choi were re-elected as inside directors at the general shareholders&#8217; meeting, and Vice Presidents In-hwa Chang and Seong Yu were newly appointed as inside directors. Those appointed as new outside directors were Shin-bae Kim, former vice chairman of SK Group; Seung-hwa Jang, a professor of law at Seoul National University, and Moon-ki Jung, an associate professor of Business Administration at Sungkyunkwan University.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">During his first three-year term that began in 2014, Ohjoon Kwon worked to enhance the corporate structure and profitability by focusing on strengthening POSCO’s core competitiveness as a steel company, its financial soundness, and group restructurings for his first three years in the role.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Kwon, who worked as CTO (Chief Technology Officer) before becoming the CEO, is a steel technology expert who has previously served as the director of the Technology Research Center and director of the Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology. Under his leadership, POSCO secured exclusive technology competitiveness and also moved forward with its Solution Marketing offerings that combine hardware, steel products, software integration and application technology, commercial support, and human solutions. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO significantly drove up its operating profits by 19% to KRW 2.6 trillion at the end of last year from KRW 2.2 trillion in 2013, Kwon’s first year as CEO. During the same period, its operating profit ratio also increased from 7.3% to 10.8%, POSCO’s first double-digit operating profit ratio in five years. Since Kwon’s inauguration as CEO, a total of 126 restructurings have been implemented to achieve a cumulative financial improvement of KRW 5.8 trillion by the end of last year. Its debt ratio stood at 17.4 percent, the lowest level since the foundation of POSCO.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As CEO Kwon succeeded in improving POSCO’s structure while enhancing its financial soundness and profitability. The company’s credit ratings by international credit rating agencies also improved. In October 2016 Moody&#8217;s upgraded POSCO&#8217;s long-term credit rating outlooks from Baa2 (negative) to Baa2 (stable), and in February 2017, Standard &amp; Poor&#8217;s upgraded their rating from BBB+ (negative) to BBB+ (stable).</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“With a low growth rate, higher raw material costs, and the spread of protectionism throughout the overall domestic industry, we are facing a tough business environment,” CEO Kwon said at the general shareholders&#8217; meeting. “But we will lay the foundation for future growth and strengthen the profitability of steel.” </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To this end, Kwon laid out his vision for the future to: </span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">strengthen the steel business by reinforcing its World Premium Products that are based on proprietary technologies such as high-manganese steel and giga-grade steel, </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">solidifying the group’s business structure through structural improvements and efficiencies, </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">discovering and promoting new synergy projects among group affiliates, and </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">preparing a future growth engine based on smart solutions.</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In-hwa Chang, who was newly appointed as an inside director, is responsible for the steel production sites at Pohang Works and Gwangyang Works. He previously served as head of the New Business Management Office, head of the Steel Solution Marketing Office and head of the Technology Investment HQ. As head of the Technology Investment HQ, Vice President Seong Yu is heading up new business endeavors such as in high value-added product technologies as well as the development of POSCO’s lithium production ventures and cathode materials business. Yu previously served as head of the New Business Management Office, head of ESM Business Office and head of the PosLX Business Group. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Outside director Shin-bae Kim is a high-profile IT business entrepreneur who served as president of SK Telecom and vice chairman of SK C&amp;C. Due to his excellent management skills, he was promoted to become a vice chairman of the SK Group.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Outside director Seung-hwa Chang is a professor of law at Seoul National University. Previously he served as a judge of the Seoul District Court and also worked as a lawyer in the United States. As a specialist in international trade law, he worked as an arbitrator for the International Court of Arbitration and was appointed as the first Korean judge of the WTO Appellate Court.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Outside director Moon-gi Jeong is an Associate Professor of Business Administration at Sungkyunkwan University. Jeong worked at Samil PwC as a member of the Financial Supervisory Service&#8217;s Accounting Review Committee for many years and has served as the Vice Chairman of the Korean Accounting Society.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The meeting was attended by about 200 domestic and overseas shareholders including representatives of overseas shareholders and institutional investors.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At a Board of Directors meeting held after the general meeting of shareholders, POSCO elected outside director Byoung-won Park as chairman of the Board of Directors. In-hwan Oh and Jeong-woo Choi were appointed as new presidents.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In-hwan Oh, promoted to president in February, is serving as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Steel Division and COO of the Steel Business Division. Before, Oh served as the head of marketing and the head of the Steel Business Strategy Office. President Jeong-woo Choi is currently the head of the Corporate Strategy &amp; Finance Center after serving as the chief financial officer, head of the Corporate Audit Department, and vice president of POSCO Daewoo.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Byoung-won Park, chairman of the Board of Directors, is now chairman of the Korea Employers&#8217; Federation and has been working as an outside director of POSCO since 2015. Park also served as chairman of the Woori Financial Group, chairman of the Korea Federation of Banks, and chairman of the National Happiness Fund.</span></p>

																<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="https://www.mobileworldcongress.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mobile World Congress (MWC)</a> has begun in Barcelona and the world is catching its first glimpse of what is coming to mobile tech in 2017. New smartphones, tablets, and wearables are taking the main stage with brands working hard to show off their new features and new designs.</p>
<p>In the ten years since Apple launched its first iPhone, mobile devices have gotten bigger screens, more features, and more powerful processors &#8211; all of which translates into bigger batteries.</p>
<p>For consumers, battery life remains a top priority. A quick search online brings up thousands of articles written on how users can improve the battery life of their phones, tablets, and wearables, even though most of these articles offer tips and tricks that only are marginally beneficial at best.</p>
<p>The rechargeable batteries used in smartphones, laptops, and now electric vehicles, are made from lithium. Traditionally, lithium carbonate is extracted from brines gathered in salt-rich lakes. This method is extremely time consuming, taking anywhere from 12-18 months, and also inefficient with a low extraction rate. Since 2010, POSCO has been working to develop new technologies for more efficient, more eco-friendly lithium extraction methods. Earlier this month POSCO announced the <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/posco-innovation-shapes-lithium-market/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">opening of its lithium extraction plant, PosLX</a>, in Korea that is able to extract lithium from recycled batteries. In addition, while working on the traditional extraction methods from saline lake water, POSCO has also found a way to <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/koreas-first-lithium-production-plant/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reduce extraction time from 12 months to less than one day</a>.</p>
<p>If MWC is any indication, mobile device manufacturers are going to continue to need more lithium-ion batteries, and POSCO is now well positioned to be a leader in providing lithium carbonate. <h3>Samsung Galaxy Tab S3</h3>
<p>Even though Samsung is waiting until March to unpack its new Galaxy S8 smartphone, they used the opportunity at MWC to <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SamsungSmartLife/posts/217372602069341" target="_blank" rel="noopener">unveil the update to their popular Galaxy Tab series</a>. The new <a href="http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/tablets/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Galaxy Tab S3</a> improves upon many of the features in the S2 and now comes equipped with Samsung’s S Pen Stylus. However, the 10” model includes just a 6000mAh battery. While this is a modest improvement over the Galaxy Tab S2’s 5870mAh, it pales in comparison to some other tablets like the 9243mAh battery included in Google’s Pixel C.</p>

<h3>LG G6</h3>
<p>LG announced its <a href="http://www.lg.com/us/mobile-phones/g6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">new flagship device, the LG G6</a>, in Barcelona on Sunday. Having ditched the rather unpopular design of the G5, LG went in a completely new direction with the G6. It features a large, nearly bezel-free display, water &amp; dust proofing, and three cameras. Last year, LG was one of few remaining manufacturers to still include a removeable battery when it launched the G5, but this year’s device drops that distinction and sees LG follow suit with a non-removable battery. To do this, LG increased the battery size from 2,800mAh to 3,200mAh, includes quick charge capabilities, and wireless charging (US models only).</p>

<h3>Huawei P10</h3>
<p>In 2015, Huawei’s P9 was released to generally favorable reviews. It included powerful specs with an elegant, minimalist design &#8211; and it was placed at a price range that was more affordable than many of its competitors. This year, <a href="http://consumer.huawei.com/en/mobile-phones/p10/index.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Huawei has launched its P10 model</a> that carries over many of the same features found on its P9. Huawei’s P9came in two sizes, one that included a 3000mAh cell and a larger one with a 3200mAh. The P10 also comes in two sizes but Huawei has decided to upgrade the size of both batteries to 3200mAh and 3750mAh respectively.</p>

<p>Blackberry continues to stand out as the one major manufacturer still using a <a href="http://blackberrymobile.com/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">physical keyboard with its new KeyOne</a>. In efforts to extend the phone’s running time, BlackBerry included a power-efficient Snapdragon 625 processor in addition to a fairly large 3505mAh battery. Both of these together should see the KeyOne hold up against BlackBerry’s first Android phone, the<a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/blackberry-priv-1308303/review/7" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Priv which included a 3410mAh battery and was listed at 22.5 hours of mixed usage</a>.</p>

<p>Nokia brought some nostalgia to its announcement by releasing an <a href="https://www.nokia.com/en_int/phones/nokia-3310" target="_blank" rel="noopener">update of the wildly popular 3310 phone</a> that first debuted in September 2000. As a basic feature phone, it comes with an Opera browser, but not much else. With limited resources being used by apps and operating systems, the battery on the Nokia 3310 gives it a standby time of 31 days with a talk time listing of 22 hours.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Consumers expect to be able to go a full day without worrying about charging their phone. However, advancements in mobile technology also require more resources &#8211; forcing manufacturers to constantly find a balance between slimmer phones and an increasing drain on batteries.</p>
<p>As seen at MWC, the demand for lithium continues to increase, and it is expected to skyrocket as other industries, such as electric vehicles, grow. POSCO’s work on lithium extraction technology is important because we have found a way to extract lithium in an eco-friendly way that also significantly reduces time. These improvements will create a notable impact moving forward as global consumer needs for lithium-ion batteries continue to rise.</p>

																<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>While known for its industry-leading advanced steel products, POSCO has also been working to strengthen its non-steel business portfolio. Amid the rising demand for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries used in smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles, POSCO has been working on proprietary technology for lithium extraction.</p>
<p>Earlier this month POSCO opened its first lithium extraction plant, PosLX, in Korea that is expected to produce 2,500 tons of lithium carbonate per year &#8211; enough to produce about 70 million laptop batteries. While most lithium carbonate is extracted from salt deposits, <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/koreas-first-lithium-production-plant/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">POSCO was the first to develop a way to extract it from wasted batteries</a>.</p>
<h2><strong>Lithium Demand to Continue Rising</strong></h2>
<p><a href="https://qz.com/783314/this-is-what-electric-cars-are-doing-to-the-lithium-market/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Demand for lithium-ion batteries is expected to rise</a> exponentially in the coming years. Tesla, Chevrolet, Nissan, Toyota, and other upstarts are all <a href="http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1107127_gm-ramps-up-2017-chevy-bolt-ev-electric-car-production-how-many-can-it-build" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expecting increased demand</a> as their electric vehicles begin rolling off production lines. Overall, worldwide demand for lithium carbonate is expected to rise from 66,000 tons in 2015 to over 180,000 tons by 2025.</p>

<h2><strong>POSCO Reduced Extraction Time to 8 hours</strong></h2>
<p>Starting in 2010 when CEO Ohjoon Kwon was the Director at the Research Institute of Industrial Science &amp; Technology (RIST), POSCO began working on developing a high-efficiency <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/lithium-rocks-posco-at-forefront-of-a-green-energy-future/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">technique for extracting lithium from water</a>.</p>
<p>In 2010, POSCO began development of a new chemically based lithium extraction technology that is able to reduce extraction time while also improving efficiency and reliance on overseas imports. The first pilot program began in 2013 and POSCO recently became the world’s first corporation to commercialize chemically based lithium extraction technology.</p>
<p>Lithium extraction traditionally takes anywhere from 12-18 months using a slow evaporation technique. However, POSCO’s new extraction method takes from 8 hours up to one month while also offering a purity rate of 99.9% and increasing the lithium recovery rate to over 80%.</p>
<p>Furthering POSCO’s work in lithium extraction, in 2011 POSCO partnered with RIST to further establish pilot production facilities with an annual capacity of two tons. Since then, POSCO has successfully completed more pilot production facilities overseas at Chile’s Maricunga Salt Lake (2013), Argentina’s Pozuelos Salt Lake (2014), and Argentina’s Cauchari Salt Lake (2015). The lithium processing plant at the Pozuelos Salt Lake in Argentina will have an annual processing capacity of 2,500 tons of high-purity lithium that can be used in rechargeable car batteries.</p>

<h2><strong>Eco-friendly Extraction Using Recycled Batteries</strong></h2>
<p>POSCO has also commercialized a new eco-friendly technology used to produce lithium carbonate. While lithium is typically extracted from salt, for the first time ever, POSCO developed a way to extract lithium from recycled batteries.</p>
<p>The lithium carbonate produced from these recycled secondary batteries was tested in January 2017 and found to be of <a href="http://www.greencarcongress.com/2017/02/posco-begins-lithium-production-for-first-time-in-korea-domestic-supply-for-samsung-lg-investing-261.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">equal quality</a> in terms of purity, charge, discharge efficiency, and capacity. This technology is used at POSCO’s<a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/koreas-first-lithium-production-plant/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> PosLX plant</a> with an annual capacity of 2,500 tons, and will help supply POSCO’s battery making partners such as LG Chem, Samsung SDI, and POSCO ESM, a subsidiary that produces cathodes for secondary batteries.</p>
<p>With POSCO&#8217;s unique technologies in place, POSCO is planning to increase production capacities to over 40,000 tons of lithium &#8211; both at home and abroad.</p>

<h2><strong>CEO Ohjoon Kwon’s Commitment to Grow POSCO’s Non-Steel Business </strong></h2>
<p>Since 2010 when he was a director at RIST, POSCO CEO Ohjoon Kwon has worked to promote the advancement of lithium extraction technology. His work can be seen in POSCO’s recent efforts to significantly cut extraction time while also finding new and eco-friendly sources of lithium carbonate.</p>

The PosLX Plant is expected to produce 2,500 tons of lithium carbonate per year &#8211; enough to manufacture about 70 million laptop batteries. <p>“Our vision is what propelled us to keep going in spite of many difficulties and limitations,” POSCO CEO Ohjoon Kwon said. “We plan to continue differentiating ourselves in the energy material business with lithium, high purity nickel, and positive electrode materials.”</p>
<p>Jong-joo Kim, a director at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said, “Today’s completion of the plant gives POSCO the ability to provide lithium carbonate for its partners in the battery manufacturing industry. ”</p>
<p>POSCO is currently obtaining its lithium phosphate, a raw material of lithium carbonate, by extracting it from wasted rechargeable batteries. In the future, POSCO will use its proprietary lithium extraction technology to produce its own lithium phosphate. POSCO has been developing this eco-friendly technology for 7 years. It extracts lithium phosphate from saline water and converts it into lithium carbonate. Unlike the conventional method that takes 12 to 18 months on average, POSCO’s highly efficient method takes as little as 8 hours or up to one month. This method offers a purity rate of 99.9% while also increasing the lithium recovery rate to over 80%.</p>

<p>Due to the continuous expansion of the mobile industry, the demand for lithium-ion secondary batteries has increased exponentially. In 2015, worldwide demand for lithium carbonate for batteries swelled from 6,000 tons (in 2002) to 66,000 tons. And as the presence of electric vehicles and energy storage systems (ESS) continues to expand, the demand for lithium carbonate is expected to balloon over 180,000 tons by 2025. To address these changing needs, POSCO plans to strengthen its position as a global lithium production base by building plants that have an annual production capacities of 40,000 tons of lithium &#8211; both at home and abroad &#8211; starting with the PosLX Plant at Gwangyang Works.</p>
