POSCO’s Consolidated Operating Profit has exceeded 927 million dollars for last three consecutive quarters.

POSCO has announced its financial reports at Investor Relation (IR) conference call on April 24th that its first quarter consolidated sales were up to 14.7 billion dollars and its consolidated operating profit was 1.4 billion dollars. The consolidated net profit was approximately 1 billion dollars.

POSCO’s consolidated profits indicates positive sign for both domestic and overseas

Reach to 14.7 billion dollars consolidated sales, 1.4 billion dollars in consolidated operating profit

Sales, operating profit and net profit has elevated by 5.2%, 9% and 10.9% compared to the previous year. This impressive achievement is done by the improvement of both domestic and overseas steel production and non-steel affiliates.

Non-consolidated sales of 7.7 billion dollars and 946 million dollars of operating profit.

PT. KRAKATAU POSCO, which is an integrated steel mill in Indonesia also turn into profit from the third quarter. Despite of decrease of steel bar and shaped steel plant from POSCO SS VINA in Vietnam, operating profit has increased gradually. This great performance of oversea steel subsidiaries gives positive indication of growth in sales.

Its non-consolidated sales rate has increased by 9.8% year-on-year to 7.7 billion dollars. Also, the proportion of the sales of World Premium products went up by 1.4% year-on-year to 54.9%.

Increased sales of high-value-added products, cost reduction, continued improvement of profitability, and the increased price of steel were the driving force of increasing operating profit margin from 1.8%p year-on-year to 13.1%.

Future is even brighter

POSCO expects that demand of steel will continuously increase on the back of steady restructuring of the Chinese steel industry and recovery of emerging economies. POSCO still also continue to secure financial soundness, reducing costs, and expanding high value-added sales.
All those efforts of POSCO brought impressive result of increasing consolidated and non-consolidated sales to 58.4 billion dollars and 27.9 billion dollars.

As one of the world’s fastest developing countries, exports are expanding, foreign direct investment (FDI) is pouring in and new infrastructure is built every day.

Cities like Hanoi are expanding at an increasing rate.
Urbanization is also speeding up growth. By 2030, more than 10 million people will reside in Ho Chi Minh City. Not only demographically, Vietnamese urban areas are getting bigger physically, with a spatial expansion rate of 2.8 percent per year, which is faster than any other urban area in the Southeast Asian region. The growth is stimulating demand for new homes, roads, infrastructure as well as labor.

As a result, the country is already the biggest steel consumer in the region, driven by a strong construction industry and abundant FDI.

Foreign Direct Investment

During the record-breaking year of 2017, Vietnam saw registered FDI increase 44 percent YOY, and exports rise 23 percent. The majority of investment came from nearby countries such as Korea, Singapore, Japan and China, where the cost of labor is much higher than in Vietnam. Plus, of the country’s 92 million people, 60 percent are of working age, and have demonstrated high output levels. Thus, loads of manufacturing jobs are being offshored to Vietnam.

For example, Korea’s Samsung Display invested USD 2.5 billion in Vietnam last year, bringing total investments to USD 6.5 billion for the production of their display products. Polytex Far Eastern, a Taiwanese company, also invested USD 490 million for their yarn factory in Vietnam. With the continued flow of FDI, the country’s economy is reaping the benefits in terms of financial gain as well as developments in infrastructure.

Foreign Investment has created many jobs for Vietnam’s workforce, such as the workers above in a Samsung Factory.
Two metro projects are under way in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, both funded by foreign companies. Ho Chi Minh City’s Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien line will run through the city at a length of 19.7km, and is planned for completion in 2020. Most of the funding comes from Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica), Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation and Shimizu-Maeda.

In Hanoi, the 13km Cat Linh-Ha Dong line is mainly supported by China Railways Sixth Group along with a consortium of other Chinese companies, and is scheduled to open for operation in 2018. Such major infrastructural upgrades will further boost the cities’ efficiency and create a better living and business environment.

A Strong Construction Industry

With FDI stimulating the economy and creating jobs, the Vietnamese are enjoying higher living standards and searching for homes in or near major cities. The growth of the middle class and urbanization have led to a booming construction industry.

According to POSCO Research Institute, Vietnam’s construction industry made up 33.3 percent of total GDP, with an 8 percent growth in 2017 alone. Moreover, the industry is projected to grow at an annual rate of 7 percent for the next 10 years. As a result, Vietnam’s construction industry is driving the nation’s steel demand. From 2011 to 2016, Vietnam’s steel demand grew by an average annual rate of 18.1 percent, the highest of Southeast Asian countries with the Philippines in second place at 13.6 percent and Thailand following behind at 5.7 percent.

With more and more homes and public infrastructure being built, Vietnam’s construction spending has grown at a CAGR of 8.5 percent and construction steel accounts for more than 93 percent of steel demand in Vietnam. Of those figures, structural steel demand is expected to make up 80 percent of the country’s entire steel demand, reaching 24 million tons by 2020. In comparison, the construction industry is accountable for 65.3 percent of total steel demand in Indonesia and 59.7 percent in Thailand, two of the biggest economies in the region.

POSCO’s Solution Marketing

For steelmakers like POSCO, Vietnam holds numerous possibilities for new partnerships and cooperation with construction companies. POSCO has been working closely with its partners in Vietnam for years, supplying premium products as well as supporting partners with technical and marketing solutions. POSCO also chose to open its first overseas structural steel solution center in Vietnam early this year at POSCO SS VINA.

The center is composed of 3 main departments: Solution Planning, Solution Development and Technical Services. Due to the influx in demand for structural steel, the solution center will develop customized marketing strategies fit for the local market, and 25 experienced construction experts will provide support for projects using POSCO’s steel.

As Vietnam eyes another year of growth and development, POSCO SS VINA also looks forward to a busy year providing material and technical solutions for domestic construction projects that will play a vital role in Vietnam’s economic and social well-being.

POSCO opened its first-ever structural steel solution center abroad in Vietnam. The opening ceremony was held on February 7 at POSCO SS VINA, attended by some 50 officials including Oh In-hwan (COO, POSCO), Ho Nghia Dung (President, Vietnam Steel Association) and Bui Anh Hoa (Vice President, Hanoi University of Science and Technology).

In recent years, Vietnam has undergone rapid urbanization with subsequent advancements in housing, energy and infrastructure. As such, demand for structural steel is expected to reach 24 million tons by 2020. The figures represent 80 percent of Vietnam’s entire steel demand, making Vietnam a booming market for steel consumption in Southeast Asia.

As the Vietnamese construction industry is projected to see an annual growth rate of 7 percent for the next 10 years, POSCO plans to pursue preemptive solution marketing activities with local affiliates such as POSCO SS VINA and POSCO-VST.

Stakeholders were met with plenty of good news at POSCO’s Q317 IR session held on October 26.

To start, POSCO’s Q3 consolidated sales amounted to KRW 15.361 trillion, its operating profit KRW 1.1257 trillion, and its net income KRW 906.6 billion.

It also noted that sales increased by 0.6 percent, its operating profit by 15 percent, and its net income by 71 percent QoQ. The figures reflect the improved performance of its non-steel affiliates, including its energy and ICT division, as well as the enhanced results of its domestic and overseas steel business.

To add, the improved performance of its principal overseas steel subsidiaries contributed to the overall increase in operating profit. The operating profit of its Chinese stainless steel production subsidiary, Zhangjiagang Pohang Stainless Steel, totaled KRW 53.8 billion, up 572.5 percent QoQ, and PT.KP, the integrated steel mill in Indonesia reported an operating profit of KRW 8.8 billion, marking a big turnaround. The operating loss of POSCO SS VINA, its shape steel plant in Vietnam, was greatly reduced.

POSCO’s separate sales increased by 1.7 percent QoQ to KRW 7.255 trillion, and its operating profit rose by 23.4 percent to KRW 721.8 billion. Its net income also increased by 43.3 percent QoQ to KRW 729.9 billion.

POSCO’s financial results continued to show improvements. Its consolidated debt ratio dropped down by 1.5%p QoQ to 68.1 percent, the lowest ever since 2010, and its separate debt ratio was 16.3 percent, the lowest ever in POSCO’s history.

Moreover, POSCO’s consolidated and separate sales projections increased by KRW 4.7 trillion and KRW 3.2 trillion, respectively, to KRW 59.5 trillion and KRW 28.8 trillion compared to its plans at the beginning of the year.

Steel demand looks to continue based on the restructuring of the Chinese steel industry, along with the anticipated robust growth of demand in emerging and developing countries. POSCO plans to make continued efforts to generate revenue by securing financial strength, reducing costs and increasing the sales of its high-value-added products.

Nine days is not a lot of time. Just over a week, it can make for a decent vacation. But for the ambitious volunteers of “Beyond,” the university student group that POSCO sponsors, that’s enough time to change someone’s life. Because in nine days, Beyond volunteers can build someone a whole new home – out of POSCO steel.

Each year for a decade, 100 students from universities around Korea have joined Beyond, looking to make a difference in people’s lives. The Beyond home-building program is called “Steel House.” This summer, following their inauguration ceremony at POSCO Center, the volunteers travelled around Korea to build the innovative steel homes. Dividing into teams of 20 people each, they traveled to Yangpyeong, Pohang, Incheon, Yecheon and Gwangyang, building homes for people in need all over Korea.

Previous home-building typically was done with bricks and mortar as well as wood. But these Beyond-built homes use steel throughout the construction, from foundations to finish.

Steel Creates Stronger, Safer Homes

Steel frames allow homes to be more spacious, as less floor space is taken up by the walls, while the frame allows for better heat and sound insulation. Plus, because these steel homes can be built so much faster than regular homes, it minimizes the resources and pollution needed for construction.

Each house uses the POSCO World Premium product PosMAC, specially adapted for construction to improve its durability. For the exterior, multicolor steel technology from POSCO C&C was combined with ribbed profile extruded panels to produce strong, beautiful homes.

Once each house was finished, the volunteers held a completion ceremony, celebrating their hard work, offering energetic performances and plenty of fun.

“The steel house activity means a lot to me because I can learn the value of working hard together,” said Beyond volunteer Eunji Hwang. “Having a cold glass of water after a long day’s work really felt good.”

The Beyond volunteers intend to take their good works beyond the borders of Korea, too. They’re going to be gathering in Vietnam in January to continue helping others, this time at Vietnam POSCO Village.

Building Bridges Over Troubled Waters

With significant facilities in Vietnam, POSCO has long been active there in lending a helping hand. For example, with the heavy rains Vietnam experiences for six months of the year, people there often have to deal with flooding.

So POSCO Beyond volunteers, together with volunteers from the local POSCO affiliates like POSCO SS VINA and POSCO E&C and local suppliers, came together earlier this year to build a steel bridge for one community.

Large steel bridges, equipped with steel handrails to hold on to, can span longer distances than existing concrete and wooden bridges and are more stable even in the worst flooding conditions. Thanks to POSCO’s bridge, now local children can get to school safely no matter the weather, and villagers can travel safely, too.

To see why steel bridges can be so important to these Vietnamese villages and how they make a difference in so many lives, check out this video:

At POSCO, our offices all over the world remain focused on improving the communities around them. Whether building homes or bridges, these are just a few more examples of the power steel has to better people lives, offering a more secure and happier future.

South Korean steelmaker POSCO has been steadily growing in Vietnam. Today there are 13 offices and affiliates under the POSCO Vietnam Holdings umbrella. In addition to the biggest facility in Vung Tau, POSCO’s offices and facilities are located in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Hai Duong, and Dong Nai, with operations in steel manufacturing, trading and construction, and sales and technical services.

Let’s take a look at POSCO Vietnam’s operations, with a focus on its three biggest ventures there: POSCO-VHPC, POSCO-VST and POSCO SS VINA.

Constant Growth for POSCO-VHPC

POSCO-VHPC (Vietnam Ho Chi Minh Processing Center) is responsible for machining, marketing and merchandizing the cold-rolled and stainless steel products of POSCO-Vietnam and POSCO-VST. Since starting operations in March 2008, POSCO-VHPC has seen impressive growth, with sales jumping from 136,000 tons in 2012 to 314,000 tons in 2015.

“We believe our operational know-how will lead us to our ultimate goal of becoming Vietnam’s No. 1 logistics and manufacturing business,” said Jung-min Jung, head of the carbon steel sales department.

POSCO-VHPC is also proud of its many philanthropic activities in Vietnam, working with the vision impaired, providing food to those in need, and running a variety of cultural programs.

“The repair team volunteers at a nearby shelter for the visually impaired,” points out Daeheon Jung, principal administrative officer at POSCO-VHPC. “We also run a soup kitchen for local residents. And to improve our organizational structure we operate a variety of events, like running an in-house library, annual team-building trips, cultural activities with employees’ families and Korean and English classes.”

POSCO-VST: Making the steel for people’s everyday lives

POSCO-VST (Vietnam Stainless Steel) is the production facility that produces all the stainless cold-rolled products—150,000 tons of 2B cold-rolled stainless, 75,000 tons of BA and 10,000 tons of precision materials.

2B? BA? “In a nutshell, ‘BA’ makes the steel bright, and 2B makes it dark,” explains Jaetak Bae, overseas president of POSCO-VST. “Depending on the heating methods, the way of surface treatment also differs. BA is related to high gloss. We use BA to make parts for mobile phones, most notably the USIM card.”

“POSCO-VST is currently aiming for 60 percent of the domestic market and 40 percent of the export market,” Bae continued. “Stainless is a material that can be used to make a variety of items, such as refrigerator containers, special containers and the roofs of buildings. As it can be easily found in our everyday lives, dominating both the domestic and exports markets is critical to achieving high profitability.”

In addition, POSCO-VST is looking to work with Vietnam’s stainless steel industry. Recently, it joint-hosted a seminar with the Vietnam Steel Association in Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi, exploring trends in the stainless steel industry. “The seminar was more than just a forum for sharing information,” said Bae. “It was a great opportunity to improve production and awareness of POSCO-VST and promote demand for stainless steel.”

POSCO SS VINA gets international recognition

Established in 2010, POSCO SS VINA is younger than POSCO-VHPC and POSCO-VST, but that means it also has some of the most modern facilities. The main products of POSCO SS VINA are section steel, iron bar and billet. In fact, this was the first time POSCO ever tried producing section steel and iron bar, so securing technical skills and competitiveness was a major goal.

“There were a lot of complications for Korean companies’ steel to enter Vietnam’s steel market in the beginning,” said Taeju Lee, overseas president of POSCO SS VINA. “However, now our technique has been internationally recognized, which has enabled us to export to Korea, and expand in the Vietnam market.”

A Q&A with POSCO Vietnam Employees
For POSCO, working closely with the people of Vietnam is an essential part of its operations there—which is why POSCO takes pride in its close relationships with the local employees. Go capture a sense of POSCO’s relationship with its Vietnamese employees, we talked with five of them about their experiences with and feelings about POSCO.

Q: What does ‘POSCO’ mean to you?

Bich: The word “professional” comes up to my mind. When I see my colleagues, every single person has a specialty of their own. I always learn a lot from their continuous efforts at self-improvement.

Khoa: As Vietnam’s economy is quite active and has high growth potential, it is very important for each individual to possess “business skills” for what they do. POSCO has many great support programs, enabling employees to build a variety of skills.

Thao: POSCO is my first job. The company supports us on many different levels, which makes me feel proud to be working here.

Q: POSCO has five elements to its brand identity: Co-prosperity, Enrichment, Fundamentals, Inspiring and Trust. What do you think describes POSCO the best?

Sang: “Inspiring”, because POSCO strives to find new things be inspiring.

Trung: I think “Trust” best describes POSCO. If we try to build trust before we establish a new relationship, I think the potential to develop together also grows. For example, if I can’t trust my colleague, it would be hard to achieve anything. But if we trust each other, we will definitely find the power to do anything.

Q: If you were to describe POSCO in one word?

Khoa: “Huge.” I feel like POSCO has a lot more than the physical greatness. When Vietnam’s infinite growth potential meets POSCO, it will be more powerful.

Thao : “Challenge.” Everything I do at POSCO is challenging and those tasks give me the power and passion to try new things.

For nearly a decade, POSCO has been one of the major steel leaders in Vietnam, creating a variety of products people need throughout their everyday lives. Today, POSCO-Vietnam is thriving, thanks to the highest-quality steel products and close relationships with the people of Vietnam.

Iron is typically thought of as a cold and stiff material, but when we consider how vital it is to our health and daily lives, we come to realize the undeniable importance of the element.

With human influence, iron becomes a material of warmth, offering sustenance, shelter and safety. Here are a few ways how.

Apart from being a useful material, iron is also an essential part of our daily diet.

Anemia, a condition in which there is a lack of red cells or of hemoglobin in the blood, often the result of an iron deficiency, can leave people feeling weak, cold and tired. It is the most common and widespread nutritional disorder in the world, affecting approximately 2 billion people globally.

Despite a significant international effort to fortify food staples and to provide iron supplementation programs specifically aimed at vulnerable populations, iron deficiency continues to increase worldwide.

But that may change soon, thanks to a solution created by a group of Canadian health workers in Cambodia.

In 2008, fish-shaped cast iron ingots were developed by the group to provide dietary supplementation to individuals affected by iron-deficiency living in poverty. When placed in a pot of boiling water, the ingots release elemental iron into the water and food being cooked.

The solution was considered such a huge success that in 2012 the Lucky Iron Fish Project was formed to develop the iron fish on a larger scale, promote the product in rural areas and distribute it to non-governmental organization partners.

The inexpensive iron lumps shaped like smiling fish are 7.5 centimeters long and have a lifespan of about five years.

The Lucky Iron Fish, which is said to release iron at exactly the right concentration to provide up to 90% of the recommended daily iron intake for an entire family, is now being used by thousands of Cambodians. In fact, more than 50,000 Lucky Iron Fish have been sold worldwide and the solution has helped to correct iron deficiency in about 90,000 people and more than 15,000 households.

Home, Steel Home

The power of iron is even more impressive when combined with love and goodwill. A perfect example of this is POSCO’s Happy Steel House—a project that helps those who have recently lost their homes get back to normal life as quickly as possible.

The Happy Steel House was first established by POSCO in 1996. These homes are built to be resistant to natural disasters like fire, earthquakes and storms, but more importantly can be constructed within two weeks.

Since 2015, POSCO’s Happy Steel House has become even sturdier and more aesthetically pleasing, thanks to POSCO C&C’s manufactured panels. In addition, POSCO’s Steel Solution Marketing Team developed an external material product through POSCO A&C’s unique Flow Coating—a technique that produces colored steel plates. The end result was a Happy Steel House with an entirely new look.

More significant than the improved design was the fact that the base of the Happy Steel House grew sturdier with every new home that was built, including those constructed for 16 Korean families who lost their homes to fires. This was achieved by applying the expertise of POSCO’s executives, staff members and global youth volunteers, as well as warmth and caring for those in need.

Building Bridges as Strong as Steel

POSCO’s mantra of volunteering and sharing is also playing an active role in other parts of the world. In Vietnam, where tropical monsoons are common, POSCO built a steel bridge for communities affected by floods.

Due to heavy rainfall six months a year, Vietnam’s bridges often become submerged under water during the wet season. This makes transportation a huge safety concern for locals.

What’s even more worrying is the fact that many young students use these bridges on a daily basis to commute to school. Since most of the wooden bridges do not have a handrail, it is even more dangerous for pedestrians, as they are unable to see where the bridges begin and end. As such, young children often trudge through flooded areas blindly in an effort to make their way across to get to school in time.

In order to secure safe traveling, POSCO built a steel bridge in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province’s flood area, Da Bac, with the help and hard work of employees and affiliates.

The “POSCO Vietnam Holdings – Steel Bridge” boasts steel handrails to provide a safe and sturdy way for the students to walk to school.

POSCO’s steel bridge was successfully completed with the help of POSCO’s global youth volunteers, POSCO A&C’s design, POSCO SS VINA’s supplies and POSCO E&C’s handrail work and construction. Thanks to these contributors’ talent and love, students and local residents in Da Bac are getting around safely, even during the wet season.

From iron health supplements to the roofs that shelter us to the bridges that help us reach our destination, iron is keeping us warm, happy and healthy.

Approximately 130 shipbuilding companies and equipment suppliers from around the world, including POSCO (South Korea) and DAMEN (Netherland), participated in the exhibition.

Attended by major government and corporate officials including Nguyen Van Cong, Vice Minister of Transportation of Vietnam, and Nguyen Ngoc Su, Chairman of SBIC, the exhibition started with an opening ceremony followed by various events such as a forum for buyers.

During the buyer’s forum, POSCO Vietnam Holdings introduced POSCO’s steel plate for shipbuilding and POSCO SS VINA’s shape steel products to buyers from 12 major Vietnamese shipbuilding companies.

They were especially impressed with the fact that shape steel, which is highly dependent on imports, can be supplied within Vietnam. Many buyers inquired about POSCO SS VINA’s product supply and new product development plans.

On the following day, a conference was held under the theme “Outlook for the Shipbuilding Market in Vietnam.” Jongkyo Choi, Group Leader of the Energy and Shipbuilding Materials Marketing Department of POSCO, captured the audience’s attention when introducing the company’s unique customer-oriented marketing strategies for the shipbuilding industry, such as welding technology for high strength steel and low temperature steel.

VIETSHIP provided a chance for POSCO to raise company awareness and discover new business opportunities, as over 200 buyers visited the company’s booth, showing great interest in POSCO SS VINA’s shape steel products.

Everyone has their first experience of being a new member in an unfamiliar group. For me, working at POSCO Vietnam and becoming a global storyteller for ‘Hello, POSCO’ were just the case. Sometimes, it could be quite difficult to feel comfortable in those kinds of new environments. POSCO Vietnam answered to the call from our newly joined employees and decided to hold a training session, so they can be one of us.

Between 8th and 12th April, POSCO Vietnam invited 40 new employees from POSCO Vietnam, POSCO VHPC, VPS and POSCO SS-VINA for a 5 day training course. The session was designed to improve working and communication skills for the new members of POSCO.

The training course offered educational sessions on POSCO’s history, corporate core values, Korean culture, QSS activity, Information and Labor Safety regulations, communication skills and steel production process. These are all closely related to POSCO’s operations around the globe and their everyday tasks.

Lee Kwang-yung, general director of POSCO Vietnam, also participated in the training course as a lecturer, delivering an hour-long lecture for working skills and labor safety measures in working environment. During the session, he emphasized the importance of core value of POSCO and self-consciousness of the employees as the members of POSCO Family.

When the educational sessions were concluded, the participants undertook a paper examination over the knowledge they acquired from the program. Luong An Xuyen, POSCO Vietnam, and Nguyen Kim Dong of POSCO SS VINA were awarded as the most enthusiastic and excellent members for the 5-day-long event.

After the closing ceremony, all the trainees joined an outside activity, climbing up the highest mountain near the training facility. It was a great opportunity for all of us to concrete the sense of belongingness and partnership as POSCO’s new prospects.

Q: How did you feel about the training course?

[dropcap style=”1″ size=”3″]L[/dropcap]uong An Xuyen: I felt comfortable and really liked the impression when I first attended the course. Through this training, I have learned about the history of POSCO and meaning of ‘Spirit of Facing Right’, one of POSCO’s core values. Becoming one of the best new staff members was another joy I received from participating in the event. I think it was a great opportunity for all of us to build a strong partnership. After the training, we still keep in touch with each other. The training course has truly become a driving force for me at work.

Q: As a member of POSCO, how do you see the company and its future?

[dropcap style=”1″ size=”3″]P[/dropcap]OSCO is a well-known steel manufacturer and I have a strong belief in its future. I am also proud of the marketing department I am currently working with. It is a place where my background skills can be utilized and developed. I also love the atmosphere and the people I am working with. I must say that POSCO is also a very staff-friendly corporate as the company always listens to us and provide well-equipped welfare policies, such as insurance, unemployment aid, accident insurance and support program for married or pregnant staff. It is a wonderful place to work.
