[e Autopos Unboxing] #3 Simpler and lighter, e Autopos’ battery pack!

2021/05/27
An eco-friendly wave has also been sweeping the automotive industry. In preparation for the upcoming green mobility era, POSCO introduced ‘e Autopos,’ an integrated brand of eco-friendly vehicles. And POSCO Newsroom presents to you the story of POSCO’s technology and solutions behind “e Autopos”.

Finally, ‘e Autopos’ unboxing Round 3! The solutions used in e Autopos body and chassis were introduced in the first round, and in the second round, the solutions used in the traction motor were introduced. This time, we will look at the battery pack steel used in e Autopos.

Before looking into battery packs, let’s first look at the EV (Electric Vehicle) batteries. EV batteries, which are generally composed of Cell, Module, and Pack, make modules by tying up several battery cells and making packs by tying up several modules. The battery will eventually put in the form of a pack in EVs.

Then shall we get to the main point now? As always, let’s start with the description of the table on the box first. The battery pack of POSCO eco-friendly car. Titled, ‘PBP-EV(POSCO Battery Pack for Electric Vehicle)’!

l Battery Pack of e Autopos, PBP-EV

PBP-EV is a POSCO’s eco-friendly car battery pack that responds to the structure of a 3rd generation EV skateboard using Giga Steel, stainless steel, and wire rod to correspond to third-generation electric vehicle skateboard structure. It is said that the collision safety performance has been enhanced by making ultra-high-strength steel by the roll forming method. Shall we dig a little more into what other features are hidden?

e Autopos’ battery pack is a component equipped with various control and protection systems in several modules, and POSCO’s high-strength steel plate and Giga Steel are applied. ‘Giga Steel’ is a steel plate that can withstand more than 100kg per 1mm² area and is the size of a 10 won coin that can withstand the weight of 10 tons or more. In the event of a car accident, Giga Steel is applied to protect the battery cell, and it’s possible to reduce the weight of the battery pack, increasing the mileage of the electric vehicle.

The stainless steel used in the battery pack is applied to the outer frame structure of the module in which a certain number of battery cells are bundled together to protect the car from external shock, heat, vibration, and more. Stainless steel has the advantage of suppressing swelling of battery cells during battery charging and discharging, and not being rusted even by moisture inside the battery pack because stainless steel is strong and resistant to corrosion.

Oh, wait!

Conditions for a good battery pack

•Excellent heat-radiating properties(the function to release heat generated from the inside to the outside)
•Strong case to protect battery cells in case of an accident
•Durability and corrosion resistance that do not cause deformation or deterioration of the structure even after a long drive

*In the electric vehicle, the battery is finally put in the form of a pack. It is designed with a structure that protects the internal battery cell because it leads to fire and explosion in case of an external collision, causing fatal accidents.

l Simpler structure, lighter weight!

The charm of unboxing is to take a closer look at the product in detail! My head hurts little by little with the appearance of difficult terms, but let’s take a closer look at the design structure.

The basic structure is a roll forming closed cross-section frame type, with a battery capacity of 60kWh, battery pack total weight of 424kg, and a case weight of 73.8kg. The main focus of the design is the first, the lighter weight of the battery pack case, and the second is the maximization of collision safety performance.

First, the collision safety performance was reinforced through the roll forming frame structure pack case design, and the number of parts was minimized while maximizing the loading space of the battery cell. Also, it is designed to easily change the outer frame length as battery capacity increases and decreases, minimizing remanufacturing of the mold due to the changes in battery capacity. It is designed with ultra-light weight by applying Giga-grade or higher steel materials such as 1470MART, 1180CP, and 980DP, and the production cost can be reduced to 70% compared to the aluminum battery pack case of the same capacity.

*1470MART Steel: Applied to the outermost Frame of the battery pack, so that external shocks are not transmitted to the internal battery cells in the event of a vehicle body collision as much as possible
*1180CP: Applied to the Cross Member inside the battery pack to maintain internal space equipped with the battery cell in the case of an external shock
*980DP: Mounted on the floor and protects the battery pack from penetration by bounding from the road when driving an EV

In addition, the PBP-EV has a cooling device to effectively release heat generated from the battery cell while charging and discharging power, and the battery pack can be lightened by applying as much Giga Steel as possible to increase the mileage of electric vehicles.

It was a little difficult, but that’s it for today’s unboxing! After studying the body, chassis, traction motor, and battery pack of e Autopos for three unboxing rounds, I feel like an expert. In the last part of the unboxing, we will look into the metal separator for hydrogen fuel cells used in e Autopos. Until you become a true expert of e Autopos, let’s cheer up a little bit more!
