Yet 240 million people within its population of 1.3 billion have no legal electricity connection. India&#8217;s solar energy plans, of which the World Bank is a financial backer, are on track to provide access to electricity for all Indians, to help contain global warming, reduce the cost of power and improve the quality of life for all Indians.</span></p>
<h2><b>India’s Solar Energy Market</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Solar energy is an extremely vital and rapidly developing industry in India. From May 2014 to March 2017, the country </span><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_power_in_India" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">quadrupled</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> its solar generation capacity. The average cost of solar electricity is 18 percent below the average price of coal-fired energy, making solar electricity the cheapest form of alternative fuel in India.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Indian government is fully supportive of this market, setting a goal of USD 100 billion in investment and 100 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity for the country by 2022. Solar is particularly important in the rural areas of India where there is limited access to electricity, so the government plans to install solar lanterns, home and street lighting systems and solar cookers.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In November 2017, </span><a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/business-39844446" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">India became home</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to the world’s largest solar farm in Kamuthi, Tamil Nadu. The farm covers 2,500 acres with 2.5 million solar modules. India’s solar electricity market has the potential for further expansion, and global suppliers and manufacturers are taking notice.  </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO India Chairman and Managing Director Gee Woong Sung and other POSCO employees showcased POSCO’s solar (PV) structures, constructed from PosMAC steel (POSCO Magnesium Alloy Coating Product). “By the end of this year, we will complete the Indian solution marketing system, which will supply not only steel but also solar PV structures,” said Sung. “In 2018, we will further expand PosMAC sales in India.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">By the end of the event, POSCO signed memorandums of understanding with four major manufacturers of PV structures in India, and will be supplying 49,000 tons of PosMAC with a goal of increasing production to 60,000 tons by 2018. </span></p>

<h2><b>Breeze-Free Air Conditioner with Metal Cooling Panel </b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There may have been those even in the heat this past summer who didn’t want to use air conditioners due to direct blasts of cold air. Here’s good news: Samsung’s “breeze-free” air conditioner, Q9500, maintains a stable room temperature without blasting a single column of strong and direct wind. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">How can air conditioners be “breeze-free”?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The company used a metal cooling panel and a micro hall-based air current passage system that constantly changes the direction of the air. Cold air is sent through 135,000 tiny holes and the short airways can reduce energy use by 65 percent. Also, climate control settings can be adjusted directly via smartphones using IoT technology based on weather data.</span></p>

<h2><b>Lightweight &amp; Durable Cameras with Magnesium Construction </b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Global camera brands have long been searching for ideal materials to meet consumers’ needs for lightweight, mobile and durable cameras. For this reason, one of the prestigious features of top-end cameras in the</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> market today is magnesium construction. This is due to magnesium’s lightness, strength and ability to shield users from electromagnetic waves. Magnesium is, in fact, the lightest structurally-used metal in the world with a greater strength-to-weight ratio than that of aluminum. This allows magnesium electronics bodies to be thinner and lighter.</span></p>

<h2><b>Ultra-light Laptop with Duralumin </b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Over the years, new technologies have pushed PC makers to build ever lighter and thinner laptops with premium materials. Samsung also started to pursue metals that are lightweight yet durable. In the past, the company used magnesium-lithium sheets from overseas suppliers in order to keep their laptops lightweight. The sheets had good machinability but low hardness, making them vulnerable to dents. In order to overcome this, the company turned to POSCO’s specially designed</span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/posco-develops-magnesium-sheets-samsungs-ultra-light-notebook-9-series/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;"> magnesium sheets, duralumin*</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, known for its high-strength and lightweight qualities. In 2016, POSCO began supplying its magnesium sheets for the Notebook 9 that is just 840g. In 2017, the Samsung Notebook 9’s weight was brought down even further to 799g.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">These magnesium sheets, made with a rapid solidification process that is capable of precision control, are tempered several times and undergo special heat treatment until they reach a final thickness of 0.5mm. POSCO succeeded in increasing the surface hardness by more than 20 percent and the yield strength by more than 50 percent, compared to its competitors, while still maintaining a high level of machinability.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Such advancements in lightweight and high-strength materials have allowed people the flexibility, mobility and convenience to work on the go and reduce inefficiencies.  </span></p>

HMS is a mixture of iron and high levels of Manganese. In precise ratios, the steel alloy will have properties such as wear-resistance, high formability and non-magnetism. These developments are significant for the applicable industries because Manganese is lower in material and production costs than other types of alloying elements with similar properties. This means manufacturers can cut back on the cost of production without compromising the quality of steel. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here’s a close look at the 5 types of HMS and how each can lead to innovations in its respective industry.</span></p>
<h2><b>High Mn Steel for Slurry Pipes (PosM_XD) </b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO’s HMS for slurry pipelines utilizes a work hardening property so it gets harder as it wears down. It is perfect for handling slurry, a mixture of sand, rock and bitumen because it has twice the abrasion resistance of traditional steel pipes. POSCO also developed a welding technology for such pipes that cuts down production costs. POSCO and ExxonMobil made headlines this year with the announcement that POSCO will produce and supply its HMS slurry pipelines to </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/posco-exxonmobil-to-mass-produce-high-manganese-steel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">ExxonMobil’s oil sands project</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in Canada worth USD 22 billion. Currently, there are 1.2 kilometers of HMS slurry pipes in Canada. POSCO also produced all the accompanying welding consumables and technology. </span></p>

<h2><b>High Mn Steel- High resistance &amp; Wear-resistant (PosM_AR)</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This is another type of HMS that is ideal for construction, heavy equipment and bulletproof gear for the military as it allows a longer lifespan and decreases structural failures. It is also cheaper in materials costs than traditional high-resistant and wear-resistant steels. The global demand for high strength steels is </span><a href="http://www.satprnews.com/2017/07/03/high-strength-steel-market-industry-outlook-research-report-2016-2023-by-decisiondatabases/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">forecasted to rise into 2023</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, due to the overall increase in middle-class population, infrastructure developments and a prosperous manufacturing sector. HMS for construction and heavy equipment will become increasingly relevant as more and more engineers and construction workers opt to use these types of affordable, long-lasting and high strength steels.</span></p>

<h2><b>Non-magnetic High Mn Steel (PosM_PM)</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Non-magnetic HMS is critical for electric power equipment, electromagnetic induction devices, superconductive nuclear power generation and stealth function devices. Even though it is less costly than other similar products, it has high tensile and yield strength as well as an elongation of over 40 percent. Most importantly, it retains its non-magnetic properties even after deformation.</span></p>

<h2><b>High Mn Cryogenic Steel (PosM_CS)</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO’s Cryogenic Steel retains its strength and toughness even in freezing temperatures. It also saves manufacturers materials and production costs, and thus it made up the world’s first LNG-fueled bulk carrier with a 50,000-ton capacity. POSCO teamed up with ILSHIN LOGISTICS to build the biggest LNG carrier in the world for Hyundai Mipo Dockyard. POSCO provided the </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="http://www.lr.org/en/news-and-insight/news/HMD-POSCO-and-ILSHIN-LOGISTICS-to-build-50000-dwt-LNG-fuelled-bulk-carrier.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">HMS solution for the 500 m3 capacity Type ‘C’ LNG fuel tank</a>, </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">located on the aft mooring deck, as well as all of the accompanying welding technology. This project was a giant leap towards greener shipping.The material is applicable to not only LNG carriers but also LNG stations and terminals.</span></p>

With a high carbon, high manganese composition, Automotive TWIP Steel boasts increased formability and collision safety. Especially when applied to the front and back bumper of a vehicle, carmakers can obtain crashworthiness while maintaining a light weight and saving costs. <p>The MOU-signing ceremony was held on October 17 in the POSCO magnesium plate factory in the Haeryong Industrial Complex in Suncheon. Approximately 20 people were present, including National Assembly member Jeonghyeon Lee, the governor of Jeolla-namdo Nakyeon Lee, the mayor of Suncheon Choonghoon Cho and POSCO CEO Ohjoon Kwon.</p>

<p>According to this MOU, POSCO and Suncheon will join forces in the purchase of a lot and the expansion of the facilities for producing automotive wide magnesium plates. They will also work side by side in transforming the Haeryong Industrial Complex into a light materials industry cluster by fostering and actively supporting magnesium-related SMEs.</p>
<p>Magnesium is in the spotlight as an ultra-light material that is lighter than aluminum and steel. As environment-friendly issues have emerged in the automotive industry, POSCO has focused on developments with magnesium, as it can be more effective than aluminum in terms of weight reduction. POSCO completed the magnesium plate factory in Suncheon in July 2007, and has since been producing and supplying alloy plates to domestic and overseas automakers and electronics companies.</p>
<p>POSCO’s magnesium was applied to Renault’s concept car ‘EOLAB,’ which was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October 2014. The roof of a standard car weights about 10kg, but the roof of ‘EOLAB’, which is made from POSCO’s magnesium plates, weighs about 4.5kg, and has accordingly attracted public attention.</p>
<p>POSCO is planning to capitalize on this expansion to preempt the anticipated increasing demand for magnesium for foreign automobiles, and become the first to make a move in the global market.</p>
