The private sector accounts for over half of the entire electricity consumption of the world, so it’s no longer enough to rely on government policies for real, sustainable change. That’s why hundreds of companies are joining the initiative and taking the reins to drive toward a low-carbon, sustainable future.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They also have every incentive to do so. From 2010 to 2016, the price of wind and solar energy dropped by </span><a href="https://www.inverse.com/article/38934-how-google-hit-its-staggering-goal-of-100-wind-and-solar-energy" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">60 and 80 percent</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, respectively. With the global demand for energy projected to rise </span><a href="https://www.worldsteel.org/steel-by-topic/steel-markets/energy.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">30 percent by 2040</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, green energy producers and related manufacturers will see an increase in business activity, including the steel industry. Steel is used to produce every single type of renewable energy, and demand for high-quality steel is looking to increase. </span></p>

<h2><b>Google, the biggest corporate consumer of renewable energy</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At the end of 2017, Google purchased </span><a href="https://www.vox.com/energy-and-environment/2017/12/6/16734228/google-renewable-energy-wind-solar-2017" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">3 gigawatts</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of renewable energy, enough to power all of its </span><a href="https://www.google.com/about/datacenters/inside/locations/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">15 data centers</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and offices around the world for an entire year. Google started purchasing wind power from a farm in Iowa back in 2010. Today, Google purchases most of its renewable energy from wind and solar energy farms in South Dakota, Oklahoma and Iowa.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">What’s significant about Google’s renewable energy consumption is that even if it does not use up all of the energy for its own operations, the company sells it back into the market in regions where they operate. Then, they retire their </span><a href="https://www.epa.gov/greenpower/renewable-energy-certificates-recs" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Renewable Energy Certificates</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (RECs), meaning it is no longer re-usable or re-issuable. In doing so, it removes energy supplies from the market and forces producers to keep generating new renewable energy supplies, instead of trading existing RECs. Google is fully backing the renewable energy industry, creating more business for generators and materials suppliers such as steel. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With the rapid growth of internet-based services, data centers are also increasing, engulfing extensive amounts of energy. Data centers already account for 3 percent of the world’s entire electricity consumption, and </span><a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/global-warming-data-centres-to-consume-three-times-as-much-energy-in-next-decade-experts-warn-a6830086.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">2 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, equivalent to that of the airline industry. It’s a relief that companies like Google, with a growing reliance on data centers, are finding sustainable ways to fuel their business, and other companies are following suit. </span></p>
<h2><b>Apple’s green data centers</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Apple is another company that is making bold strides toward renewable energy. The company stated all of its data centers run on 100 percent renewable energy and its operations over 23 different countries run on 93 percent renewable energy.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Apple joined RE100 in 2016, but the company is no newcomer to green energy. In 2015, Apple issued USD 1.5 billion in green bonds to finance eco-friendly business endeavors. Then in 2017, Apple issued another USD 1 billion in green bonds in response to </span><a href="https://www.ft.com/content/db5b911e-508a-11e7-bfb8-997009366969" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">U.S. President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Because Apple’s business also includes manufacturers who do not follow the same sustainable practices, Apple’s next challenge is to filter through their suppliers and select those that are committed to powering their operations with renewable energy. So far, </span><a href="https://mashable.com/2017/06/13/apple-billion-dollar-green-bond-clean-energy/#swGIIwWi1kqK" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">8 major suppliers </span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">have come on board. </span></p>
<h2><b>Microsoft and Facebook are on their way</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Microsoft’s global operations have been </span><a href="https://www.esi-africa.com/news/microsoft-to-run-data-centres-off-50-renewable-power-by-2018/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">fully powered by renewable energy since 2014</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. This includes manufacturing, licensing and logistics. All of its data centers are 100 percent carbon neutral, but Microsoft is planning a slow but sure transition towards renewable energy. As of now, about 44 percent of the electricity that powers Microsoft data centers come from wind, solar and hydropower, and their first target is to reach 50 percent by the end of this year. They have also stated they will strive for 60 percent in the next 10 years. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Just like Microsoft, Facebook looks to power 50 percent of all its data centers with renewable energy by the end of this year after successfully reaching its 25 percent target back in 2015. Facebook has a large presence all over the globe, and already, their data centers inLuleå, Sweden, Altoona, Iowa, Fort Worth, Texas and their Menlo Park headquarters are running on 100 percent green energy. Moreover, Facebook plans to power their newest data centers to be built in Ireland, Denmark, New Mexico, Nebraska, Ohio and Virginia with renewable energy. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The ever-growing demand for electric motors can be attributed to several factors including the growing interest in eco-friendly and fuel-efficient motors and improved living standards in a number of densely-populated countries around the world. Plus, new innovations in home appliances are not only driving the demand for electric motors, it’s changing the way they are shaped, sized and put together. </span></p>
<h2><b>So, how exactly do electric motors work? </b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">An electric motor is in pretty much every electronic appliance. The motor is what turns electricity into mechanical movement. When an electric motor is charged with electricity, the axle, or metal rod turns and creates movement. The motor itself is powered by two opposing magnets &#8211; the permanent magnet and the electromagnet. When electric current is applied to the electromagnet, it pushes against the permanent magnet creating rotary or linear movement.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Many parts of electric motors are made of electrical steel, including the motor core. Electrical steel is an alloy of iron and silicon and can generate various magnetic properties. High-quality electric steel such as </span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5iMGle5fPc" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO’s Hyper NO</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> will have a small hysteresis curve that minimizes energy loss. POSCO’s technology also reduces core loss by 5 percent as well as motor noise by 5dB. </span></p>
<h2><b>Electric Motors in Home Appliances</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Home appliances currently account for about </span><a href="http://www.yourhome.gov.au/energy/appliances" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">a third of total energy consumption</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and attribute to </span><a href="http://www.yourhome.gov.au/energy/appliances" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">45 percent</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of greenhouse gas emissions in an average household. Energy-efficient home appliances are in high demand due to increasingly stricter environmental regulations, consumers’ desire to save on utility bills as well as their desire to lower noise output from appliances such as dishwashers and dryers.</span></p>

<h2><b>Next Generation of Home Appliances </b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Aside from traditional home appliances, there is a growing number of innovative, next-generation home appliances that rely on high-quality electric motors for maximum efficiency, cost effectiveness and also range of movement. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">These days, robots are part of the average household in the form of vacuums, personal home assistants, alarm clocks and more. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Moreover, engineers are now working with modular actuators to build robotic structures for a greater range of movement, speed and positions through segmented parts. Highly efficient, relatively low-cost and diverse actuators are coming together with AI sensors, voice recognition and smart controllers to breed a new generations of home appliances. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are </span><a href="https://clr.es/blog/en/electrical-actuators-robotics/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">3 different types of actuators</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> based on how they are powered, and electrical actuators are most commonly found in home applications. Compared to the other types of actuators, electric actuators have lower speed and power, but are easy to install and control. Because they are often modular and can be applied for customized purposes, the resulting robots have a great range of motion to fit the new roles home robots are taking on. </span></p>
<h2><b>Examples of Applications in the home</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here are some of the latest robots for the home that require advanced electric actuators and are changing the way people think of home appliances. </span></p>
<h3><b>Aeolus Bot</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The prototype for the </span><a href="https://aeolusbot.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Aeolus Bot</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> was </span><a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/aeolus-is-the-smart-home-robot-of-my-dreams/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">introduced at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (CES) in Las Vegas. The robot can move around the nooks and crannies of the home learning different objects and places with its smart software. It can also retrieve different objects and clean the house using other home appliances. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Not only that, Aeolus also has Amazon’s Alexa software, recognize its owner’s face and can alert family members of any disturbances. </span></p>
<h3><b>Sony Aibo</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sony’s Aibo looks and moves like a dog. With its voice recognition software it can respond to commands, recognize faces and perform tricks. Although the furless bot may not be able to swim or jump the fence, it can pick up a objects, sit, roll over and move much more dynamically than other home robots. </span></p>

Paired with its abundance of capital and available labor, the country has taken on numerous building projects over the years to build up its economy and facilitate trade with other regions. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, these building projects are on another level of huge, and with all the megacities popping up throughout the country, China boasts many of the biggest infrastructure projects in the world. Here’s the Steel Wire’s look at some of the most impressive to date.</span></p>
<h2><b>Three Gorges Dam</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">China is home to the largest dam in the world, measuring 1.5 miles in length and sitting 60 (!) stories tall. The Three Gorges Dam took 1.92 million tons of rolled steel to complete, along with 10.82 million tons of cement and 1.6 million cubic meters of timber. The dam opened in 2003 on the Yangtze River and last year, generated a record-high </span><a href="https://www.thebalance.com/top-ten-largest-construction-projects-844370" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">97.8 billion kilowatt-hours</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of electricity, 4.35 percent higher than the previous year.</span></p>

<h2><b>Beijing Capital International Airport</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) was the second largest and busiest airport in the world in 2016, just behind the Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport in the U.S. PEK recorded </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/20-busiest-airports-in-the-world-2017-5/#no-2-beijing-capital-international-airport-pek-94393454-passengers-in-2016-19" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">94,393,454</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> passengers that flew in and out in 2016, a 5 percent increase from 2015, and is easily the biggest airport in all of Asia. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The first phase of the airport cost USD 3.5 billion and was completed in 2008, but in order to handle the growing number of passengers, an expansion project is planned for 2025. The estimated 5-year project will almost </span><a href="https://blogs.wsj.com/chinarealtime/2014/12/16/why-beijing-needs-a-new-13-billion-airport/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">double PEK’s capacity</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and cost an additional USD 13 billion.   </span></p>
<h2><b>Jiaozhou Bay Bridge</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">China is also home to the longest sea-crossing bridge in the world. The massive structure stretches over 26.4 miles and connects the cities of Qingdao and Huangdao. The 110ft width accommodates 6 traffic lanes that are supported by 5200 steel pillars.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The bridge first opened in 2011 and took </span><a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/8608279/China-opens-worlds-longest-sea-bridge.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">USD 2.3 </span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">billion and over 10,000 workers to build. The Jiaozhou Bay Bridge also took </span><a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/8608279/China-opens-worlds-longest-sea-bridge.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">450,000 tons</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of steel to complete, allowing the bridge to be able to withstand earthquakes up to 8.0 in magnitude, typhoons and the force from a 300,000-ton object.  </span></p>
<h2><b>Jiuquan Wind Power Base</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Not surprisingly, the largest wind farm in the world located in China. Jiuquan Wind Power Base is made up of 7,000 turbines that generate enough electricity to sustain a small country. The plant was approved in 2008, and the government has pledged an additional </span><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/15/world/asia/china-gansu-wind-farm.html?mtrref=www.google.co.kr" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">USD 17.4 billion</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> by 2020 as part of the effort to develop China’s renewable energy industry. For now, only </span><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/15/world/asia/china-gansu-wind-farm.html?mtrref=www.google.co.kr" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">3.3 percent</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of all the electricity generated in China comes from wind turbines. With the additional investment, Jiuquan Wind Power Base will be able to generate a massive 20 gigawatts of sustainable electricity. </span></p>

<h2><b>New Century Global Center</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">What does the biggest building in the world look like? A mini country. Located in Chengdu, Sichuan province, the New Century Global Center combines a shopping mall, water park, hotels, movie theaters, offices, restaurants, ice rink and more into </span><a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2360182/Take-look-inside-worlds-biggest-building-Chinese-dome-houses-shopping-centre-Mediterranean-village-water-park--ice-skating-rink-multiple-hotels.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">19 million sq.ft.</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of space. The structure is made of glass and steel and measures 500 meters long, 400 meters wide and 100 meters high. Designed by architect Zaha Hadid, it even has artificial sun for the perfect weather, 24 hours a day. </span></p>

<h2><b>Port of Shanghai</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The world’s biggest ports are mostly located in China, and the biggest one is the Port of Shanghai. In 2012, </span><a href="http://www.ship-technology.com/features/feature-the-worlds-10-biggest-ports/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">744 million</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> tonnes of cargo and </span><a href="http://www.ship-technology.com/features/feature-the-worlds-10-biggest-ports/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">32.5 million</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of steel containers passed through the port. The entire area of the port on the Yangtze River covers 3,619km² comprised of 3 main ports: Wusongkou, Waigaoqiao and Yangshan Deep-Water Port. About 25 percent of China’s trade passes through the Port of Shanghai, or 2,000 steel container ships per month. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Most recently, the 4th phase of the Yangshan Deep-Water Port was completed, making it the largest automated port in the world. It spans across 2.23 million square meters, and can automatically handle 4 million standard containers per year, or 25 per hour. It was also built to accommodate the heaviest ships in the world. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">China is using its steel to build up the country’s infrastructure, and set world records along the way. Besides being impressive in size, the structures are expected to contribute to greater connectivity and economic prosperity throughout China. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In order to meet this mark, industries need to find sustainable sources of fuel in the near future, or be met with </span><a href="https://www.lion.com/lion-news/october-2017-(1)/acid-rain-excess-emissions-penalty-adjusted-for-20" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">costly penalties</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Up to now, the price of non-renewable fuel was too attractive for clean energy to be competitive. However, tighter regulations, major leaps in technology and state-level commitment have birthed a new era of renewable energy. </span></p>
<h2><b>Energy you can bank on</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">According to </span><a href="https://www.energyandcapital.com/articles/renewable-energy-investing-for-2018/6160" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Bloomberg analysts</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, USD 10.2 trillion will be spent on new power generation by 2040, 72 percent of which will go towards wind and solar photovoltaic plants. By then, the cost of solar electricity will drop 66 percent, meaning by 2021, solar power will be cheaper than energy from coal in China, India, Mexico and the UK. The cost of onshore wind power will decrease by 47 percent by 2040, and offshore wind power by 71 percent thanks to more advanced and cost-effective wind turbines.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Renewable energy is getting more and more competitive, and companies who don’t make the switch to clean fuel will be left out of the race. </span></p>

<h2><b>However, electricity doesn’t fall from trees. </b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It falls from steel! Tons of steel (literally) are used to extract and convert energy from renewable energy sources. </span></p>
<h3><b>Wind Energy</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Most wind turbines are made of steel, and for an average wind turbine, </span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcalP7jFoVM" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">140 tons of steel</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> are used. That accounts for 80 percent of all the materials that go into the </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/steel-solutions-in-wind-power/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">tower, the nacelle, rotor blades and its supporting facilities</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The majority of steel is used to make the tower which serves as the foundation on which the blades turn to generate energy. There are several types of turbine towers, such as steel-concrete hybrid towers, steel truss towers and steel lattice towers, but about 90 percent of all wind turbine towers are made of </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/steel-solutions-in-wind-power/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">tubular steel</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Also, steel’s non-corrosive properties maximize the lifetime of wind turbines and minimize maintenance costs.</span></p>

There are about </span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jm77mqRsYAk" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">1400 TWh of geothermal energy</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in the earth’s core that can be harvested by 2050. Geothermal energy gives off extreme heat, so it is vital for the </span><a href="http://www.stainless-steel-world.net/blogs/42/stainless-steel-in-renewable-energy-applications.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">heat exchangers, condensers, pipes, filters, pumps and valves</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to be corrosion resistant. Otherwise, maintenance costs would be unsustainable and corrosion can contaminate the water as well. That’s why most of the infrastructure related to geothermal energy is made of iron castings, stainless steel and steel alloys.</span></p>

Steel makes up most parts of the underwater turbines including the nacelles, support structures and underlying piles for a sturdy and sustainable power source. As with other renewable energy, increasing the lifetime and decreasing maintenance costs will determine the competitiveness of tidal energy. Thus, stainless steel is the go-to material for corrosion resistance. The infrastructure related to tidal energy extraction is massive in scale and will call for </span><a href="http://e360.yale.edu/features/will_tidal_and_wave_energy_ever_live_up_to_their_potential" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">thousands and thousands of pounds</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of steel to construct.  </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Korea is the largest source of tidal energy in the world, with 552.7 GHw of electricity harvested from Siwha Lake every year. It’s also where steelmaker POSCO is located to provide the necessary types and grades of steel for renewable energy production. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO E&amp;C has its own </span><a href="http://www.poscoenc.com/eng/business/business_career.asp?hDEPTH2=2&amp;hDEPTH3=7" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">solar, wind, tidal and refuse-derived fuel (RDF) plants</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, which makes sure even industrial wastes get turned into energy. The company was also the first company in Korea to build a solar power plant in 8 different regions capable of generating </span><a href="http://www.poscoenc.com/eng/pr/press_release_view.asp?hBOARD_ID=PR&amp;hDOC_ID=351" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">31.2MW of solar electricity</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In order to stay competitive in the market, industries are already using or transitioning towards renewable energy sources to fuel their business activities. As governments around the globe also commit to a greener future, the demand for steel used in renewable energy infrastructure will see a significant boost. </span></p>

According to the </span><a href="https://qz.com/688823/80-of-the-worlds-megacities-are-now-in-asia-latin-america-or-africa/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">UN</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, megacities have more than doubled since 2015, and 80% of the world’s megacities are now in Asia, Latin America or Africa. According to a </span><a href="http://w3.siemens.co.uk/mobility/uk/en/rail_solutions/DC/Documents/MegaCity.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">report published by Siemens</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, transportation is the top infrastructure concern for megacities as it directly influences the economic and environmental well-being of the megacities. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here is what bridge expert Marco Rosignoli had to say about emerging megacities, the greatest challenge of providing efficient transportation and what kind of bridges will need to be built to accommodate the changing urban environment.  </span></p>
<h2><b>The Cities of the Future </b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Today, megacities are the gateways of globalization. They drive flows of people, goods, knowledge and money around the world, and they also make a large contribution to economic growth at a national level. Tokyo accounts for 28 percent of the Japanese population and generates 40 percent of the country’s GDP. Paris accounts for 16 percent of the French population and generates 30 percent of its GDP. Many metropolitan regions have higher GDP pro-capita than the national average, higher labor productivity, and faster growth rates. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Given their weight in the national economy, the ability of megacities to compete at a global level is paramount. To attract investment, these cities need modern, efficient infrastructures. As the competition shifts from competition among countries to competition among cities, many countries are developing policies to develop their cities into globally competitive megacities. </span></p>
<h2><b>“Mega” Challenges for “Mega” Cities</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Recent studies show that transportation is the biggest infrastructure challenge of megacities and has a big impact on city competitiveness. Transport problems affect megacities at all levels of development and range from obsolete systems and aging infrastructure of mature cities such as London and New York to an insufficient system capacity of transitional cities and even non-existing basic infrastructure of emerging cities such as Karachi.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The mass transport systems of megacities must be capable of transporting millions of people while putting as little strain as possible on the environment. A good quality of life requires a well-functioning infrastructure, and an effective infrastructure contributes to economic prosperity.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Congestion costs are huge for megacities’ economy, employment and the environment. Air pollution and traffic problems are the top two environmental problems of megacities, and road transport alone is responsible for over 40 percent of discharge of suspended particles into the atmosphere. Although water, electricity, health care, safety and security also need investment, recent studies suggest that these sectors are less likely to see a strong link between spending and improved competitiveness of megacities, despite their important impact on the attractiveness of the city for investment. Instead, stakeholders will prioritize spending on improving transportation infrastructure to boost city competitiveness. </span></p>
<h2><b>Investing in Transportation for Megacities</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Stakeholders are split on whether to invest in new transport capacity or reorganize, revitalize and increase the efficiency of existing infrastructure. When new investment is made available, it will likely be used to deliver incremental improvements to existing transportation systems rather than on new infrastructure projects.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Thus, megacities can expect to see public investment go toward the maintenance of existing bridges, restoring and partially rebuilding instead of constructing from scratch. Maintenance efforts will include the demolition of existing bridges, combined with the conversion of old-generation steels into new families of high-grade steels. This will reduce the environmental impact and achieve a net earning in structural capacity that will pay off part of the energy cost of the reconversion process.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Overall, public investment in traditional roads and roadway bridges will diminish, and will increase for eco-friendly sectors such as mass transit systems, electrified ground transportation for food and public services, light-rail transit bridges serving local districts from mass transit hubs, and high-speed railway networks connecting megacities to airports, ports and other megacities. The environmental impact of private transportation will also lead to new, greener mass transit solutions, which will become a top priority for investment.</span></p>
<h2><b>Bridges of the Future</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Many urban bridges in the U.S. were designed to be as light as possible in light of the scarcity of steel following the 2nd World War. This led to the use of long-span trusses incorporating built-up sections with trusses and lightening holes. Such bridges require constant maintenance and hand painting of large surfaces, which makes their maintenance financially prohibitive. Bridges that are still in acceptable service conditions may suggest replacement just to avoid maintenance costs.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">New-generation urban bridges designed for long service life and minimized lifecycle costs will use plate girders and multiple protective layers of replaceable materials. Modern high-grade steels allow for the use of a smaller number of structural members, which diminishes the number of field splices, diaphragms, lateral braces, and steel surfaces to protect.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Compared with reinforced concrete, steel offers a higher strength-to-weight ratio that increases the design efficiency of modular bridges. These days, steel bridges are becoming increasingly stronger and lighter. As a core material, steel facilitates the delivery of prefabricated units, simplifies the design of bridge piers and foundations, and is easier and faster to recycle or use in smaller quantities. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the future, these lighter and smaller bridge units will require more field splices, and new types of bolted, welded or hybrid connections will be introduced to increase the structural efficiency of connections, impose less structural constraints on their distribution, and avoid the weakening of the cross-section with drilled holes.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Moreover, the availability of deck assembly areas and interference of construction operations with adjacent infrastructure will govern bridge design. Incremental launching construction from aerial platforms will see new applications, especially when combined with on-site welding of the field splices among modular bridge units. The welding of field splices will allow for optimized segmentation of bridge units, will diminish the cost of field splices, and will relax the fabrication tolerances of the units.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Overall, emerging megacities will translate into an increased demand for bridges, whether it is from building a new bridge or a reconstructing an existing bridge. The challenge will shift from structural considerations to rapid, cost-effective construction processes within a complex urban environment.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Future bridges that will accommodate stricter environmental and sustainability regulations will feature shorter, lighter spans that can be prefabricated in smart factories and transported and erected rapidly in a congested urban environment. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Steel bridges offer many advantages over prestressed-concrete bridges under these new demands. A transition to greener megacities will provide a wealth of business opportunities, eco-friendly technologies and construction materials, and diversification for the coming future. </span></p>

Transportation is becoming automated, connected, and much, much faster as the wild, unthinkable ideas of science fiction novels are becoming real. Multiple industries are coming together, led by some of the most influential people in Silicon Valley. This will reshape the way we move goods and people and their influence will be needed as they face multiple barriers.</p>
<p>Take a look at three of the ways transportation is restructuring itself for faster, more sustainable travel. Some are closer to realization than others, but all of them are changing the way we think about movement. When realized, all of these ideas will have an impact far beyond what we can see now.</p>
<h3>The Hyperloop &#8211; Fast &amp; Frictionless</h3>
<h5>An Idea by Elon Musk</h5>
<p>In 2013, Elon Musk came up with the idea for the Hyperloop as he grew frustrated with the high-speed rail being developed in California at that time. He called it “both one of the most expensive per mile and one of the slowest in the world.” Musk said, “It would be great to have an alternative to flying or driving, but obviously only if it is actually better than flying or driving.”</p>
<p>He imagined capsules, zooming by at speeds faster than any train or plane, that would allow him to get to San Francisco from LA in 35 minutes. The basic concept was that the capsules would float through partially evacuated steel tubes propelled by fans and electromagnets. Because there would be less friction from air and rails, there could be significant increases in speed and durability, while decreasing reliance on fuel at the same time.</p>

<p>Because Musk was so involved transforming the space industry with SpaceX, the auto industry with Tesla, and the energy industry with SolarCity, he did not seem to have much time for Hyperloop. So, he developed a <a href="http://www.spacex.com/sites/spacex/files/hyperloop_alpha.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">58-page outline of his ideas</a> and left it to others to develop. And they have.</p>
<h5>Hyperloop One Unveils Testing Site</h5>
<p>To fulfill this improbable dream, a handful of startups have stepped in &#8211; one of them being California-based <a href="https://hyperlooptech.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hyperloop Technologies</a>. They have been building a test site, called DevLoop, 30 minutes outside of Las Vegas in the Nevada desert that was unveiled last week to the public. According to their press release, <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/hyperloop-one-reveals-first-images-of-nevada-desert-development-site-devloop-at-middle-east-rail-300418921.html?tc=eml_cleartime" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DevLoop is a 500-meter full-scale Hyperloop test structure</a> weighing over one million kilograms. The Hyperloop One tube measures 3.3 meters in diameter and they are expected to perform their first full test sometime in the first half of 2017.</p>

<p>In November, Hyperloop Tech signed an agreement with the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority to evaluate building a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hyperloop-one-test-track-nevada-photos-2017-3/#in-november-hyperloop-one-signed-an-agreement-with-the-dubai-roads-and-transport-authority-to-evaluate-building-a-hyperloop-between-dubai-and-abu-dhabi-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hyperloop between Dubai and Abu Dhabi</a>. When completed, a commute that once took several hours will take just 12 minutes.</p>
<p>All parties involved realize the costs are going to be high. Creating a new form of transportation infrastructure is not simple and building large steel semi-vacuum tubes over ground (or under) is technologically difficult requiring trained engineers and highly skilled workers. To offset this, Hyperloop Tech is focusing some of its energy in attracting industrial freight clients.</p>
<h3>The Future of Freight</h3>
<p>One of Hyperloop Tech’s Transportation Economists,<a href="https://hyperloop-one.com/node/2201" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Dapeng Zhang, recently presented on transformational freight</a> explaining that their “vision at Hyperloop One is to connect cities into mega-regions, and turn metro areas into metro stops. This will inevitably improve the efficiency of freight supply chains. By connecting two distant metros, Hyperloop One creates a geographical cluster which could help reduce inventory costs, promote even more just-in-time strategies, and expand same-day delivery service areas.”</p>

<p>Whether or not this is completely feasible is still up for debate, but it is exciting to see the strides being made in this type of supersonic transportation technology. Other developments such as electric cars, autonomous vehicles, and SkyTran (below) will help us move short distances, but ideas like the Hyperloop are needed to connect the larger metropolitan areas.</p>
<h3>SkyTran &#8211; Personal Rapid Transit</h3>
<p>Apart from the Hyperloop and autonomous driving technology, other personal mobility developments are being made. One of those is <a href="http://www.skytran.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SkyTran</a>, a company working to develop a personal rapid transit system that<a href="http://knowledge.ckgsb.edu.cn/2016/08/10/technology/skytran-ceo-jerry-sanders-future-transportation-elevated/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> carries people in autonomous pods</a>. Located near Mountain View, California, SkyTran has focused its efforts on relieving congestion in cities by creating a system that rides on an elevated monorail. It is both quick and efficient, and unlike the Hyperloop, it is nearing completion with plans to open in Israel, Nigeria, and France.</p>

<p>Using what is called maglev technology (magnetic levitation), the SkyTran uses electromagnets (similar in concept to the Hyperloop) to propel itself forward (up to 155 mph) while using little to no electricity. SkyTran says that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/skytran-flying-pods-will-launch-in-nigeria-2015/#its-capable-of-traveling-155-mph-but-the-pods-in-lagos-will-likely-travel-45-to-65-mph-to-start-sanders-says-based-on-need-the-city-may-increase-the-systems-speed-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">when the pod reaches 10 mph, it can continue to glide</a> and accelerate without any extra power. SkyTran’s CEO says the pods can on the same amount of electricity as two hair dryers.</p>

<p>In addition to being highly efficient to operate, SkyTran benefits in its low upfront costs. Unlike the Hyperloop, which requires rather large infrastructure and maintenance costs to ensure proper functionality of the pipe’s vacuum and propulsion system, SkyTran is projected to be a much more economic option. Because the system is set up above the streets, its footprint is small &#8211; requiring only an 18-inch steel pole to hold the steel and aluminum capsules.</p>
<p>The company estimates that it will only cost about USD 13 million per mile to build, compared to a subway system that can cost around USD 160 million for the same distance. Because of the low upfront costs, SkyTran believes that malls, hotels, and other private businesses will want to build their own offshoot lines &#8211; not only for their customers but because it will be profitable.</p>
<h3>POSCO&#8217;s Advanced Auto Steel in Future Cars</h3>
<p>Autonomous, connected, electric. These are the common buzzwords that come to mind when we think about future trends in personal transportation. <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/first-movers-auto-industry-ces-2017/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">At CES earlier this year,</a> seemingly everyone had their own solution to made driving cars more connected and safer, and with less human involvement.</p>
<p>Nissan and BMW unveiled plans to use Microsoft’s personal assistant technology, Cortana, with their cars. Honda became the first major manufacturer to develop an electric concept car specifically designed for ride-sharing. And as for self-driving cars – Nissan announced it would bring autonomous driving support to its Leaf electric car, Hyundai introduced one that would be affordable enough for the masses, and Audi announced a partnership with Nvidia to bring self-driving cars to market by 2020.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At the 2016 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), </span><a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/posco-announces-new-steel-sheets-at-detroit-motor-show/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO showcased its advanced automotive steel products</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> that are both strong and lightweight, making them uniquely suited for the electric cars of the future. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The weight of POSCO’s advanced auto steel is about 26.4 percent lighter compared to that used in most mid-sized vehicles. But despite being lighter, it received the highest level possible ratings from Europe and North America’s automobile collision evaluation Institute, Euro NCAP and IIHS.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In addition, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which measures the amount of CO2 discharged throughout the entire life cycle from material production to recycling, showed that emissions from the internal combustion engine body were 50 percent lower. Electric car emissions were also decreased by about 9 percent. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The displayed products included the new PosM Steel and hot press forming steel (HPF). PosM Steel is a “dream material” for car manufacturers because it is five times stronger than other steel in terms of machinability while also having an impact absorption of up to 100 kg per mm². While many steelmakers have been developing PosM Steel type steel, it has never been produced on a commercial scale before. In addition, POSCO’s HPF steel is stronger than many other steel alloys making it a good solution for manufacturers looking to improve car safety. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">POSCO currently supplies advanced auto steel sheets to car and component manufacturers, including Toyota, Volkswagen, and GM. POSCO has 10 automobile production plants and 24 machining centers around the globe. In addition to providing its World Premium Products, POSCO also provides Solution Marketing services that offer customized technologies developed in-house (such as welding and molding) that are customized to fit a customer’s unique needs depending on the product and manufacturing process. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Innovations in the transportation industry require big ideas, big investments, and new technological advancements. Right now, all of these seem to be coming together for what is expected to be some big changes. If the investors at Hyperloop and SkyTran have their way, pretty soon we will be able to travel across Europe on a Hyperloop, transfer to a SkyTran, and arrive in our hotel in less than an hour. </span></p>

Now in its 50<sup>th</sup> year, CES decided to expand its Marketplaces and showcase new technologies in <a href="http://www.ces.tech/Show-Floor/Marketplaces/Smart-Energy">Smart Energy</a> and <a href="http://www.ces.tech/Show-Floor/Marketplaces/Sleep-Tech">Sleep Tech</a> – two areas where POSCO has also been working to advance its own steel technology.</p>
<p>While the Smart Energy Marketplace featured innovative products that provide electricity in more sustainable ways, the Sleep Tech Marketplace showcased exciting sleep-related technologies aimed at improving health through better sleep. <p><strong>The Smart Energy Marketplace: Cleaner &amp; Sustainable Electricity </strong></p>
<p>As they do every year, tech giants and startups used CES to debut their new products and ideas. Just when it seemed that the market was saturated with enough cool floating Bluetooth speakers and mobile charging cases, CES 2017 took it to another level with new solar-powered gadgets.</p>
<ul>
<li>Designed by Lemon Technology, <a href="http://www.lemon-california.com/">The California Roll</a> is the first solar-powered, waterproof speaker. It lasts up to 20 hours with only 7 hours of sunlight, includes voice recognition capabilities, and uses NFC to offer a faster and more reliable connection with less energy consumption. Because it is waterproof, the California Roll is good to go, rain-or-shine.</li>
<li>When your smartphone battery dies, <a href="http://ipowerup.com/">iPowerUp</a> is a case that can recharge the phone from solar cells located on the back. Its solar panels store energy and then charge your phone when an outlet is unavailable.</li>
</ul>
<p>POSCO’s work in developing smart energy technology can be seen in the World Premium Product, <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/poscos-posmac-leads-new-generation-specialized-steel/">PosMAC</a> (POSCO Magnesium Aluminum alloy Coating). Solar cells need to be installed with materials that are both lightweight and sturdy enough to withstand the elements. PosMAC is uniquely suited for <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/solar-energy-development-key-future-energy/">solar energy development</a> because it is durable, light weight, and non-corrosive.</p>

<p><strong>The Sleep Tech Marketplace: Better Sleep &amp; Improved Health </strong></p>
<p>Trouble sleeping? CES showcased a possible solution at its Sleep Tech Marketplace. In its first year, the marketplace showcased several products that help regulate your body’s circadian rhythm and provide a more peaceful sleep.</p>
<ul>
<li>If noises are keeping you up at night, <a href="http://www.meetnightingale.com/">Nightingale</a> is a device that plugs into an outlet and masks common indoor and outdoor noises that can disrupt sleep patterns by adding ambient sounds, called “sound blankets.” Two speakers placed in two different units in a room utilize the walls to reflect sound and blend it into the background.</li>
<li><a href="http://m.pegasiglass.com/en/about.html">PEGASI Smart Sleep Glasses</a> solves a series of sleep related issues by generating lights of specific wavelengths to stimulate the suprachiasmatic nucleus on the hypothalamus, which controls the circadian rhythms that help regulate sleeping patterns.</li>
</ul>
<p>POSCO has also been working to develop technologies that can help regulate sound for more peaceful sleep. <a href="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/tag/posco-poscozy/">PosCoZy</a> was designed to provide a more peaceful and quieter living experience through a flooring system that can greatly reduce impact noise between floors in apartment buildings and offices. PosCoZy’s manganese Z-clips’ resistance to vibrations are 4x higher than regular steel. What’s more, PosCoZy helps reduce the sound of typical walking from 50 decibels to just 40dB, while impact sounds are lowered from 58dB to 38dB. That means you can sleep through the night without hearing the party going on upstairs.</p>
