l July 8, POSCO gave away Smart Watches to 1,200 working on hazardous sites
l The smart device sends rescue signals to colleagues in case of hazardous accidents, such as falls and heart rate abnormalities
POSCO (CEO Jeong-Woo Choi) introduced a Smart Watch that sends an immediate rescue signal when detecting an abnormality of the wearer in the field.
On July 8, POSCO gave away Smart Watches to 1,200 employees who work on hazardous sites at Pohang and Gwangyang Works.
The Smart Watch secures the rescue Golden Hour by sending an immediate signal to nearby colleagues when it detects any physical abnormalities — such as falls and abnormal heart rates — of the employees in the field.
For example, in case an employee collapses due to an abnormal heart rate while inspecting the facility, the Smart Watch detects the symptom and automatically requests nearby colleagues for rescue. The system is sought to be a supplement to the existing system, where employee safety was checked through CCTVs or regular contact.
Due to the large area of steelworks, immediate responses to unexpected situations in the field weren’t an easy task. On addressing the matter, POSCO developed the new system last year and tested it in selected factories for two months. The test-operation received positive responses, especially it was found to be very helpful for prompt action to accidents when an employee is working alone.
POSCO CEO Jeong-Woo Choi, putting top priority on worksite safety, stated, “Safety is of paramount importance. All POSCO executives and employees should be prepared in advance and gather our heads together to secure worksite safety in the entire industrial ecosystem.” Choi also decided to distribute the Smart Watch to all the employees who work at steelworks including workers of its business partners.
POSCO has been establishing a safe work environment by installing multiple smart systems such as a gas leak monitoring system, a fire security system, smart helmets, and unmanned facility inspection with drones. POSCO plans to introduce more cutting-edge technologies for the safety of employees and keep with the principle, ‘Safety is of paramount importance.’
