Practically everything in the modern home, from the refrigerator to the electric toothbrush, runs on an electric motor. The global market for electric motors

Practically everything in the modern home, from the refrigerator to the electric toothbrush, runs on an electric motor. The global market for electric motors is worth tens of billions of dollars and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.2 percent from 2017 to 2025.

The ever-growing demand for electric motors can be attributed to several factors including the growing interest in eco-friendly and fuel-efficient motors and improved living standards in a number of densely-populated countries around the world. Plus, new innovations in home appliances are not only driving the demand for electric motors, it’s changing the way they are shaped, sized and put together.

So, how exactly do electric motors work?

An electric motor is in pretty much every electronic appliance. The motor is what turns electricity into mechanical movement. When an electric motor is charged with electricity, the axle, or metal rod turns and creates movement. The motor itself is powered by two opposing magnets – the permanent magnet and the electromagnet. When electric current is applied to the electromagnet, it pushes against the permanent magnet creating rotary or linear movement.

The inside of an electric motor. (Source: Stiavelli)

Many parts of electric motors are made of electrical steel, including the motor core. Electrical steel is an alloy of iron and silicon and can generate various magnetic properties. High-quality electric steel such as POSCO’s Hyper NO will have a small hysteresis curve that minimizes energy loss. POSCO’s technology also reduces core loss by 5 percent as well as motor noise by 5dB.

Electric Motors in Home Appliances

Home appliances currently account for about a third of total energy consumption and attribute to 45 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in an average household. Energy-efficient home appliances are in high demand due to increasingly stricter environmental regulations, consumers’ desire to save on utility bills as well as their desire to lower noise output from appliances such as dishwashers and dryers.

In order to maximize energy efficiency, engineers and manufacturers turn to high quality non-oriented electrical steel such as POSCO’s Hyper NO to meet consumer needs.

?

Next Generation of Home Appliances

Aside from traditional home appliances, there is a growing number of innovative, next-generation home appliances that rely on high-quality electric motors for maximum efficiency, cost effectiveness and also range of movement.

These days, robots are part of the average household in the form of vacuums, personal home assistants, alarm clocks and more. Unlike traditional home appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines that are stationary, innovative robot appliances move in different directions. This is where actuators come in. Actuators are electric motors in a gearbox, and the gearbox essentially gives electric motors added torque, or rotational force, that allows the robot to move in a variety of directions, including twisting and turning.

Actuators are what propels a variety of movement in robots. (Source: Motion Control Tips)

Moreover, engineers are now working with modular actuators to build robotic structures for a greater range of movement, speed and positions through segmented parts. Highly efficient, relatively low-cost and diverse actuators are coming together with AI sensors, voice recognition and smart controllers to breed a new generations of home appliances.

There are 3 different types of actuators based on how they are powered, and electrical actuators are most commonly found in home applications. Compared to the other types of actuators, electric actuators have lower speed and power, but are easy to install and control. Because they are often modular and can be applied for customized purposes, the resulting robots have a great range of motion to fit the new roles home robots are taking on.

Examples of Applications in the home

Here are some of the latest robots for the home that require advanced electric actuators and are changing the way people think of home appliances.

Aeolus Bot

The prototype for the Aeolus Bot was introduced at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The robot can move around the nooks and crannies of the home learning different objects and places with its smart software. It can also retrieve different objects and clean the house using other home appliances.

The Aeolus Bot responds to voice commands. (Source: Unbox Holics)

Not only that, Aeolus also has Amazon’s Alexa software, recognize its owner’s face and can alert family members of any disturbances.

Sony Aibo

Sony’s Aibo looks and moves like a dog. With its voice recognition software it can respond to commands, recognize faces and perform tricks. Although the furless bot may not be able to swim or jump the fence, it can pick up a objects, sit, roll over and move much more dynamically than other home robots.

The Sony Aibo can do simple tricks on command.
The changing face (and shape) of home appliances is putting actuators to full use with their wide range of movement, speed and positions. Highly-efficient electric motors and actuators will continue to be in high demand as new innovations in home appliances and robots keep rolling out.

In order to stay competitive in the fourth industrial revolution, POSCO CEO Ohjoon Kwon has been exploring new ways to improve POSCO’s technology and continue to lead the smart revolution in the global steel industry.

As such, CEO Kwon made his first official visit to the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas earlier this month to stay on top of the latest trends in connectivity and smart solutions that can be applied to the manufacturing process in smart factories.

Ultimately, a smart factory for POSCO would entail using smart sensors to pick up data, smart analysis through AI and automated production processes. Moreover, the smart factory would store and analyze its big data and apply it to make future improvements and prevent malfunctions. Aligned with many of POSCO’s business growth engines, major topics and themes at CES 2018 included smart homes, smart cities, autonomous cars and AI, and more than 3,900 companies put forth their best innovations.

Smart Connectivity

As more and more cities undergo smart transformations, the next big trend will be data collection and analysis through 5G connectivity. It was no surprise to see numerous innovations in smart transportation, smart grid, public safety, healthcare, data analytics and more at CES 2018. Moreover, city officials from early-adapting cities such as Kansas City, Miami and Las Vegas took to the stage to discuss their cities’ smartization plans. Some of the topics discussed included using GIS mapping software, smart construction, inclusive technology and autonomous transportation to enhance citizens’ productivity, efficiency, safety and well-being.

CES 2018 was a platform for smart city discussion.
CEO Kwon visited related booths to learn about new technologies POSCO could apply to its businesses. Currently, POSCO’s smart factories are run by POSCO ICT’s smart platform called PosFrame, which allows the factory to apply a digital genome map to operations via data collection, instantly convert smart factory initiatives in domains, act as a common platform for new technologies and apply the same, standardize smart factory model to other facilities through reusable software.

Also at this year’s CES, POSCO ICT signed an MOU with DPR Construction, a leading smart construction company to apply PosFrame to construction sites for more efficient, cost-effective and smarter construction processes.

Smart Transportation

Another major theme at this year’s CES was mobility. Namely, autonomous and electric mobility. Companies from all across the board from traditional car manufacturers and software companies to gaming companies lined up to showcase their new innovations.

Even as the market for sustainable EVs and autonomous EVs look to expand in 2018 and beyond, EVs only make up about 1 percent of the global fleet of cars and there’s still a ways to go before EVs become the norm. Drivers need to feel safe in their EVs or autonomous EVs, want greater range on a single charge and need to see more charging infrastructure in their communities before making the switch.

What’s more is that just because a vehicle runs on electric batteries, it doesn’t automatically mean the vehicle is eco-friendly or transmits less harmful emissions. Manufacturers and consumers alike have to take a lifecycle approach to assess the car’s impact on the environment from production to end of life recycling.

POSCO works with numerous partners to develop leading solutions for electric vehicles.

That’s why POSCO is working with automakers to come up with vital solutions in the auto industry for a greener future. It supplies partners with an advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) called POSCO GIGA STEEL that is both lightweight and super strong, allowing cars to travel with less energy without compromising passenger safety.

POSCO is also a lithium provider and has developed an innovative technology to speed up the extraction process, saving time, costs and damage to the environment. It also works with car makers to apply premium electric steel to partners’ electric motors to increase efficiency and cut costs.

With so many exciting new innovations and technologies surrounding EVs, POSCO will undoubtedly play a significant role in ensuring automakers have the tools they need to realize a green future. POSCO will work to stay ahead of newly emerging technologies to enhance the efficiency, sustainability and performance of all of its solutions.

Happy new year from the Steel Wire! It’s a new year and new chance to accomplish those new year’s resolutions, but success is often built on past achievements. POSCO plans to build on all of its achievements in the past year to continue growing in 2018. Check out some of the most successful moments of 2017.

1. #Winning – competitiveness and sustainability

POSCO was recently named the world’s most competitive steelmaker for the eighth consecutive year by World Steel Dynamics (WSD). POSCO again took home the gold with the highest scores in five categories including innovative technology, cost reduction, skill level of labor, restructuring and investment environment.

POSCO is the world’s most competitive steelmaker.

Not only did POSCO come out on top for competitiveness, the company was ranked 35th among the “Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World in 2017,” by Toronto-based magazine and research firm Corporate Knights. The list was announced in early 2017 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. This is the third consecutive year POSCO made the list with outstanding scores in safety, environment and the salary levels of employees.

2. Joining the trillion club

POSCO entered the trillion club twice in 2017 as it recorded USD 1.283 billion (KRW 1.365 trillion) of operating profits in the first quarter, and USD 1.0581 billion (KRW 1.1257 trillion) in the third quarter based on its consolidated operating profit. Even in the midst of global oversupply and governments opting for protectionist policies, POSCO’s profits were unscathed. Much of the credit is owed to the company’s steel and non-steel affiliates overseas with strong sales performances. The consolidated debt-to-equity ratio was the lowest since 2010 and the non-consolidated debt-to-equity ratio was at its lowest ever.

3. Everything’s bigger in…POSCO

Last June, after 102 days of repair, Pohang Blast Furnace No.3 became the world’s fifth-largest blast furnace. Its internal volume expanded from 4350㎥ to 5600㎥, allowing the super-sized blast furnace to put out 15,000 tons of molten metal daily. POSCO currently operates five super-sized blast furnaces, or blast furnaces sized 5500㎥ or larger.

Pohang Blast Furnace No. 3 under construction.

POSCO further upgraded Pohang Blast Furnace No.3 by adding in AI capabilities. It is now equipped with smart technology that can control the internal state of the blast furnace automatically, and smart sensors can now predict accidents before they happen, extending the lifespan of the furnace. Furthermore, POSCO plans to collect big data from the blast furnace and use it to develop fully smart blast furnaces in the future.

4. The smarter the better

Since his taking up the CEO position in 2014, POSCO CEO Ohjoon Kwon has repeatedly expressed his vision for securing future competitiveness through smart solutions. The company even started a smartization training course for employees and held the Smart POSCO Forum 2017 last July to share its insights and progress with clients and affiliates.

Moreover, POSCO also supported a smart talent training project customized for SMEs. The program included job training for AI and big data application technologies. Going forward, POSCO plans to build a “Smart Industry” to increase steel competitiveness and create new business opportunities with new, smart technologies.

5. Getting in on electric vehicles

The market for electric vehicles (EVs) is an exciting one with so many companies investing in new technologies. POSCO also hopes to extend its customized material and technology solutions to EV manufacturers. Last October, the company held the Global EV Materials Forum to showcase four of its core business areas: lightweight bodies, batteries, motors and charging infrastructure. More than 380 clients took part in the forum to learn about emerging trends and POSCO’s products and services including POSCO GIGA STEEL and commercially produced lithium batteries for EVs.

6. POSCO’s new marketing approach

For the first time ever, POSCO created and aired a TV commercial highlighting a specific product, instead of its corporate brand. This marks POSCO’s first B2C marketing effort and features the company’s innovative auto steel, POSCO GIGA STEEL. The commercial compares POSCO GIGA STEEL to aluminum, another widely-used lightweight material in a visual demonstration so that everyday drivers can better understand the benefits of a stronger yet lighter material.

7. Going for 10 million tons of automotive steel

On April 26, POSCO completed 7CGL, a new steel production facility in Gwangyang, Korea, designed exclusively for the production of POSCO GIGA STEEL. 7CGL has an annual capacity of 500,000 tons and is the world’s first plant capable of producing both 1.5 giga-level galva-annealed (GA) and galvanized (GI) steel sheets.

POSCO Completed 7CGL on April 26, 2017.
In addition, POSCO managed to reduce investment funds and secure cost competitiveness by designing and constructing 7CGL’s core facilities based on accumulated facility technologies and operating know-how. The 7CGL is POSCO’s 12th plant exclusively for automotive steel sheets, and POSCO aims to sell 10 million tons of automotive steel in 2018 globally.

8. Setting new records with high manganese

POSCO became the first company in the world to commercialize the technology for producing high manganese using fusible ferroalloys. The technology took KRW 5.5 billion of research and development costs and four years to complete.

POSCO is the first company in the world to commercialize its high manganese production technology.
The core part of POSCO’s high manganese production process is PosLM (POSCO Liquid Manganese), a special holding furnace that stores manganese ferroalloys in a fusible state. POSCO’s technology reduces the production time for high manganese steel by more than 50 percent as well as increases slab production efficiency. PosLM was jointly researched and developed by the Institute of Technology and POSCO M-tech.

9. Bringing home the lithium

On February 7, POSCO opened its PosLX (POSCO Lithium Extraction) plant with an annual capacity of 2,500 tons. The plant is the first plant in Korea capable of commercial lithium production. The technology took 7 years to perfect, but it was well worth it. The production process for high purity lithium now takes just 3 months, compared to the previous 12 to 18 months.

POSCO is making lithium extraction more efficient and sustainable. (Source: Mining)

In the past, Korean manufacturers imported the entire quantity of lithium they needed. With POSCO’s PosLX plant, partners now have access to a local supply of lithium. Moreover, POSCO plans to use lithium phosphate extracted from wasted secondary batteries as raw materials, in keeping with the company’s sustainability standards.

POSCO will continue building on a successful 2017 in the new year, by tackling new challenges and continuing to provide its partners with customized and optimal solutions in all business areas.

This year marks a special milestone for POSCO as the company celebrates its 50th anniversary. It has also been 4 years since POSCO CEO Kwon Ohjoon’s inauguration as CEO back in 2014, and he has since implemented numerous positive changes. Here are the results of POSCO’s successful restructuring over the past 4 years as well as the company’s vision for the future.

Since 2014, POSCO successfully completed 150 cases of restructuring.

Back in the 2000s, POSCO suffered its worst financial crisis due to failed investments in growing businesses. Its consolidated operating profit, which exceeded KRW 7 trillion at one time, recently fell to about KRW 2.5 trillion. POSCO’s cash on hand, which peaked at more than KRW 8 trillion, declined to nearly KRW 5 trillion, and credit ratings worsened as well.

That’s when CEO Kwon implemented the Innovation POSCO (IP) 1.0 and 2.0 projects successively to innovate the company’s financial structure and began broad-based restructuring. CEO Kwon recalls, “POSCO sold its non-core steel business, and merged similar businesses to increase efficiency and eliminate waste. We also liquidated low-yielding substandard businesses to prevent the aggravation of insolvency.”

As a result, the number of POSCO’s domestic affiliates decreased from 71 to 38, and the number of its overseas affiliates declined from 181 to 124. The company also recovered KRW 7 trillion over the 4-year period, and prevented annual losses of about KRW 400 billion.

Moreover, POSCO’s consolidated cash on hand increased to KRW 8.55 trillion at the end of the third quarter, repaid its debts by more than KRW 5 trillion and POSCO’s consolidated debt ratio dwindled to 67.6 percent, the lowest since 2010. Moody’s, an international credit rating agency, recently upgraded the forecast for POSCO’s issuer rating, Baa2, from negative to stable, and then to positive, and predicted that POSCO’s financial health will continue to improve in the next 1-2 years.

POSCO’s Future growth strategy is two-track: smartization and development of new growth engines.

CEO Kwon expressed his vision for the company In 2018 and beyond. He said, “POSCO plans to implement smartization with efforts such as combining ICT with its core businesses, ranging from steel and energy to construction and chemicals to develop newly converged businesses to lead the 4th Industrial Revolution.”

CEO Kwon delivering his new year’s message at the POSCO Family Kick-off Meeting 2018.

The company will also accelerate the development of smart factories utilizing big data and artificial intelligence, and further enhance core processes for environmentally-friendly, highly-efficient and future-oriented steel mills.

In addition, CEO Kwon mentioned that POSCO will carry out new growth businesses this year in the energy and materials sectors. In the energy sector, POSCO will work to stabilize its power generation business, and expand its LNG midstream business by developing the Gwangyang LNG Terminal into the energy hub of Northeast Asia. POSCO is also planning to increase investments in renewable energy and seek business opportunities in line with government policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The company will also work to secure stable supplies of saline water and ores containing lithium in South America and Australia for its lithium business.
POSCO is the world’s 5th largest steel producer, but it’s got more up its sleeves than just steel. This year, POSCO developed game-changing technology that extracts lithium from water in just 8 hours to one month. Traditionally the task takes anywhere from 12 to 18 months. To add, the new technology can achieve a purity rate of 99.9 percent and increases the lithium recovery rate to over 80 percent.

Lithium is a central component in rechargeable batteries for electronics such as smartphones, laptops and most importantly, electric vehicles (EVs). Heading into 2018, POSCO is well-positioned to be an industry leader in a rapidly-growing market for EV batteries.

In June, one of POSCO’s oldest and the world’s 5th largest blast furnace got a makeover with some added AI. After undergoing 102 days of repairs, Pohang Blast Furnace No.3 came back much bigger with an expanded furnace volume of 5600㎥, compared to its original volume of 3795㎥ from its beginnings in 1978. Plus, Pohang Blast Furnace No.3 now has smart sensors to monitor operations and detect malfunctions or accidents before they happen.

Zoepf shared his vision of what the future automotive market will look like and its implications for car manufacturers, suppliers and drivers. According to research, 60 percent of the cars in the U.S. will be running on electric batteries by 2030, and those cars will mostly be part of a shared mobility service. Traditional ways of car production, distribution and consumption will undergo massive change and companies will have to find ways to stay competitive in the new market dynamics.

Major cities in developing countries around the world are transitioning into smart cities. Smart cities use information and communication technology (ICT) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to collect information and optimize resources for their citizenry.

This means that data from city dwellers’ devices and their interaction with the physical city will determine how the government allocates resources and even influence the private sector as well. Although major developing smart cities are inspired by technology, old-school construction resources like steel are still required.

Here’s a look at where the next wave of smart cities will emerge and what opportunities lie ahead.

Countries Ripe for Smart Development

The major developing cities to watch are located in India, China and Africa. These areas of the world are ripe for growth, and what they have in common is a vast amount of land. Before modern ICT and IoT were available, it was almost impossible to imagine a way to uniformly connect these large areas into a single city. However, thanks to technology, governments will be able to bring greater numbers of people together and better manage resources for all. And development is already well underway.

India

In India, the “world’s oldest city” is being developed into a smart city. The city is called Varanasi, and it’s a holy place for the Hindu religion. However, its outdated infrastructure has created a demand for rejuvenation, and Varanasi’s renovation plans involve a lot of steel. With plans to outpace Japan as the second largest producer of steel, Varanasi will be rapidly expanding its own production capacity and turning to the global steel industry for material and technological support. Planned improvements to Varanasi include creating more affordable housing, improving the public transportation system and upgrading the sanitation system. All three of these improvements are major undertakings, and all three have roots in steel. Creating new housing structures, rail systems and modern sanitation will boost steel consumption.

Aside from Varanasi, there were nearly 100 cities considered for smart city development in India, and approximately 20 of those have been approved by the Indian government for funding. The smart cities on India’s shortlist come from a variety of regions. This redevelopment project is part of a larger goal by the Indian government to bring the large country together. By implementing smart city technology throughout the vast country, India will be able to create a better-organized society.

China

China is rapidly developing its smart cities. With plenty of funding and technology to spare, the Chinese government has earmarked 500 cities for smart city development. While the original goal was to complete the transformation for all 500 cities by the end of 2017, more than half of the listed cities are still undergoing development.

So far, Qingdao, Hangzhou and Xiamen cities are ranked at the top for smart city governance according to the National Development and Reform Commission and the China Center for Urban Development. These cities are already equipped with wifi internet service on buses, smart register and pay services and robots that interact with citizens on a daily basis. Hangzhou, in particular, has been a sort of test tube for Alibaba’s City Brain project where they gathered massive amounts of data for artificial intelligence (AI) to process and make decisions with. The technology has drastically improved the city’s efficiency by decreasing traffic and the time it takes to respond to emergencies. As a result, City Brain will be exported to and implemented in other Chinese cities. Although not everyone is sold on the idea because the technology may put citizens’ privacy at risk, it is still expected to speed up smart city implementation all over China.

Tianjin City is one of the cities in China developing into a smart city.
These cities will require support from the steel industry to develop and engineer high-quality, high-traffic amenities with technology at the core. Similar to Varanasi, many Chinese city projects will initially focus on housing and transportation upgrades.

Africa

In Africa, over 300 cities will transition into smart cities, but many development projects are facing delays getting off the ground. Much of Africa is in need of establishing standard city amenities like city government offices, schools and an open market for privately-owned businesses. Nevertheless, the region presents a tremendous opportunity for growth, and Africa’s smart cities may become some of the most efficient locations around the world.

The Modderfontein Smart City is being developed in Johannesburg by Chinese firm Zendai.
Because there is a lack of complex infrastructure, these smart cities will be built almost from scratch, allowing the people of the city to benefit from a more customized smart-city technology. Instead of working around a historical route or building, African smart cities have the flexibility to transition into smart cities optimized for the exact needs of their developing governments, education systems and business communities.

The construction of African smart cities will start from scratch.
This is a city planner’s dream come true. And it’s ripe for steel consumption. The steel industry can provide high-quality materials and technologies, ensuring the best construction methods and materials from the onset. Without having to re-engineer structures, African smart cities are expected to be state of the art.

While opportunities are vast in this new arena of development, many of the top steel companies have already signed contracts with developing countries to assist with smart city production. But that doesn’t mean all of the work has been assigned. With thousands of cities slated to go smart within the next five years, the steel industry will have many opportunities and play a large role in the redevelopment of these communities. Steel companies that have an eye for technology and the highest quality products will be highly sought after in the years to come.

That number is projected to reach USD 4,882.9 million by 2023, at a CAGR of 52.42 percent from 2017 to 2023 according to Markets and Markets. It’s no surprise then, that companies are rushing to boost their competitiveness with AI.

In 2016, POSCO established a Smart Solution Council to research AI, big data and IoT applications. To date, the company has achieved a cost reduction of USD 14 million with the new technology. Even as one of the first steel producers in the world to implement a smart factory for production, the road ahead is a long one. Members of the discussion panel at the 2017 Smart POSCO Forum offered their expert opinions on how companies should move forward with AI research and applications.

Problem Mining

“One of the biggest difficulties in applying AI to manufacturing companies is problem mining. The only way to solve a problem is to find it and define it.” Kim Byung-In, a professor at the POSTECH Department of Industrial and Management Engineering, started off discussions and added, “Along with problem mining, people can learn from the past with reinforcement learning. Reinforcement learning means learning through similar tasks from the past to apply to new assignments. Defining problems and solutions more precisely and systematically managing related keywords can be useful for future tasks.”

Professor Zhang Byoung Tak, an AI professor at Seoul National University and a distinguished professor for POSCO added, “Traditionally, people solve problems, but in the generation of AI, AI will be able to solve problems for us… People now have to focus on defining problems, implementing systems and getting the right kind of data.”

Cooperative Research and Investment

Along with defining the exact problems that AI can provide solutions for, the implementation of AI will also call for a new working culture for companies and industries.

Tech company VUNO CTO Jung Gyuhwan stated, “Each company has its own production or operation method, and different data formats and protocols, but product inspection and screen UI (User Interface) are common areas. If we can find such common areas that can be commercialized and continue to research ways to expand AI applications to different sectors, we can achieve meaningful results together.”

Jung went on to highlight that most AI personnel are unfamiliar with manufacturing. In particular, steel production terms are so difficult that it takes a considerable amount of time to share and understand information. There are also numerous obstacles and obligations for startups entering an unfamiliar development environment full of regulations and restrictions on things like the use of codes.

“In other words, task efficiency is a trade off with information security. I believe that if there is such a process in POSCO where the risk of technology leakage is not high, it will speed up results through collaboration with start-ups. POSCO ICT in Pangyo is a good place for startup employees to work. If we can take advantage of the POSCO ICT databases, collaboration with start-up companies will be easier. As of now, there are not many AI companies in Korea that specialize in manufacturing. Most people don’t even know that there is a lot of data available in the manufacturing industry. That’s why fostering start-up companies specializing in manufacturing now, is a good idea.”

According to CB Insights, M&A (mergers and acquisitions) of AI startups have increased 700 percent since 2011, because they are more efficient and often more insightful when it comes to AI research. Besides investing in existing startups, members of the panel agreed that collaborative competitions such as Kaggle, a contest platform where data scientists from around the world participate in solving problems in industry and society, are a great place to find talent and foster them as start-up companies.

Tackling New Challenges

The flurry of activity around AI research shows just how new the sector really is. People are still finding ways to apply AI across different sectors and industries. In such a volatile environment, how do companies and researchers navigate their way forward?

According to Choi Heeyoul, a professor of computer science at Handong Global University, companies need to “start where the people, problem definition and data are ready. Whether it is in production, sales, distribution, etc., if there is the will to solve problems, then results will follow. Especially when collecting data, you need the help of data analysts. For example, classification data for different types of steel can only be analyzed if the history of the classification criteria is recorded. Speech recognition is not any better for AI application than other fields, yet the most active and productive research has been completed in this sector. This is attributable to the will to apply AI, the abundance of accurate data and close cooperation with data analysts.”

Obtaining accurate data is vital for AI research

Professor Zhang Byung-Tak had another approach to offer. “I hope people will boldly take on challenges. The dramatic increase in computing power can now enable attempts that were previously considered reckless…No matter how much data we gather, it will never be enough. We need to approach problems as experiments and just start. One way to go about it is to work in reverse instead of waiting for data to be accumulated. You can start the task to define the data that is needed and determine the coherence of the data to the task.”

Lee Jong-Seok, a Professor at Sungkyunkwan University added, “When we are defining problems, we need to separate them into ones that can be solved in the short term and ones that require long term solutions. Some problems can be solved with minor improvements, while other problems will persist. For the latter, it is important to have patience and invest in a solution over a long term.”

That’s exactly what manufacturing companies are doing. They are collecting data every stage of production all the way to sales and administration. Big data is now available to study and apply to boost companies’ efficiency, sustainability and performance. Those who come up with the optimal software and modeling systems for data analytics will win the competitive edge early on.

UNIST professor Choi Jaesik echoed the panel’s sentiment, in closing, saying, “It’s very uncommon for a manufacturing company to hold AI courses for all their employees. I think POSCO can take pride that…POSCO is a great place to apply AI and achieve results. There is already plenty of data on site and employees are continuously working to obtain more accurate data. I look forward to seeing what POSCO will bring to the advancement of AI.”
