Presented examples of waste reduction and resource recycling initiatives, such as sludge recycling and packaging reuse, while also operating a promotional booth

POSCO Thainox participated in the ‘Circular Economy Seminar’ on October 2, hosted by Thailand’s Department of Primary Industries and Mines under the Ministry of Industry. At the seminar, it shared its exemplary circular economy practices.

The circular economy aims to reform the traditional linear economic model of resource extraction, use, and disposal. By minimizing the materials used and waste generated in production and maximizing recycling, circular economy activities help address resource depletion and reduce environmental pollution, aligning with ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) goals.

Since 2022, the Thai government has selected five companies annually that excel in ESG management activities as representatives of the circular economy. These companies are highlighted at the Circular Economy Seminar, where their best practices are shared, providing insights for advancing Thailand’s circular economy.

In June of this year, POSCO Thainox was honored to be named a representative circular economy company, alongside global home appliance and battery manufacturer Panasonic and ThaiBev, one of the most preferred employers among Thai university students. POSCO Thainox presented its circular economy initiatives at the seminar and operated a promotional booth showcasing related products.

POSCO Thainox has contributed to waste reduction by recycling sludge previously sent to landfills for use as cement material and reusing paper and packaging materials multiple times. Additionally, the company produces and donates police shields and bulletproof plates for vests using scrap generated during production as part of its broader CSR activities, further promoting the circular economy.

Dr. Teerawut, Director of Industrial Innovation at the Department of Primary Industries and Mines, expressed his admiration, stating, “I am impressed by POSCO Thainox’s high rate of waste material recycling. I encourage the company to continue its efforts in discovering new practical examples of innovation that can expand the circular economy and contribute to the development of Thailand’s manufacturing sector.”

POSCO Thainox, under the stewardship of President Shin Hyung-gu, was bestowed with the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Award at the ‘2023 Environmental Impact Assessment Monitoring Awards,’ an event held at Bangkok’s Asawin Grand Convention Hotel.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment has hosted this ceremony since 1995, on a 2-3 years cycle. It accredits environmentally conscious companies by recognizing excellence in environmental management across various key industries, including manufacturing, energy, and petrochemicals. The evaluation encapsulates five categories: water pollution, air pollution, resource utilization, energy management, and waste management.

<img class="wp-image-24829 size-full" src="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/20230901_news_a01.jpg" alt="▲POSCO Thainox claimed the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Award at the '2023 Environmental Impact Assessment Monitoring Awards' on July 19th at Bangkok's Asawin Grand Convention Hotel.
During the awards ceremony, Vice-minister Jatuporn Buruspat graced from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, POSCO Thainox received environmentally friendly company certification, and eight other manufacturing firms. In total, 43 companies across seven industry sectors were recognized.

POSCO Thainox earned this distinction by demonstrating exceptional results in waste-to-resource initiatives, such as recycling waste from acid pre-treatment processes, achieving zero landfill through the recycling of neutralized sludge waste, and repurposing water treatment iron scale.

Major media, including Thai public broadcasting, disseminated news of the award, enhancing POSCO Thainox’s reputation in Thailand for sustainable environmental management and environmentally friendly operations.

POSCO Thainox was awarded the Green Industry Level 3 certification by the Thai Ministry of Industry in 2019 and is currently striving for a higher Level 4 certification this year. The Green Industry Level certification, conferred annually by the Ministry of Industry, appraises seven areas: governance, human rights management, labor laws, environment, fairness, customer VOC, and social contributions. Achieving Level 4 certification would bestow upon a company preferential rights in government procurement, alongside eco-product certification, and allow it to manage waste autonomously without requiring government approval.

In 2022, Thailand’s Ministry of Industry honored POSCO Thainox at the ‘Eco Factory+ Value Awards’ for its remarkable waste-to-resource achievements. This year, it is pursuing three environmentally friendly certifications from the Thai government, including the Green Industry Level 4 certification.

In the first series of ‘How Do You Like POSCO?’ POSCO Newsroom sat down with the employees of PT.KRAKATAU POSCO in Indonesia. This time, the newsroom headed to Thailand to meet the special guests of today. Thailand is known to be the largest automobile market in Southeast Asia and one of the world’s Top 10 automobile manufacturers.

Among the three manufacturing subsidiaries that POSCO operates in Thailand, POSCO-Thailand PC(Processing Center) is the oldest. Launched in 1997, POSCO-Thailand PC is still under operation and supplies automobile and home appliance steel products. In 2011, POSCO acquired Thainox, the sole stainless rolling mill in Thailand, to expand the product range. POSCO ventured further by establishing POSCO-TCS in 2016 to meet the demands of global automobile steel products. POSCO-TCS manufactures premium galvanized steel for automobiles.

All three subsidiaries sit in ‘Rayong,’ Thailand’s largest industrial complex located 170 km away from the capital, Bangkok. POSCO Newsroom met with four employees of POSCO-Thainox online and got a chance to hear their stories.

This month, the newsroom met with another such SV, Min Keun Bae who is the current SV of POSCO Thainox, POSCO’s manufacturing subsidiary in Thailand.

| Thailand, the Largest Automobile Market in Southeast Asia

Thailand is known to be the largest automobile market in Southeast Asia. In 2011, POSCO launched ‘POSCO Thainox, the sole stainless rolling mill in Thailand to meet the demands of automobile steel products, which have a high dependency on imports. POSCO Thainox is also aimed to increase its market share in the Thai automobile and home appliances sectors.

To optimize the plant operation, expert field knowledge was crucial. That’s why SV Min Keun Bae came on board. Mr. Bae joined POSCO in 1982 and had worked for over 30 years in the stainless steel order processing and production managing area before retiring in 2016.

Mr. Bae was offered the SV position a year before his retirement by then President of POSCO Thainox. Bae said, “There was a place that needed me. I was able and had lots to offer, and I couldn’t find a reason to decline. So as soon as I retired, I headed straight to Thailand.”

| ‘Sawadee Kap’ — Befriending New Language, New Culture

At the beginning, everything was challenging. The mental burden of starting over in a strange new place was huge. However, with his positive and proactive personality, Mr. Bae adapted to the new life in Thailand.

Bae concentrated on learning Thai to better adjust to life in the foreign land — he watched YouTube videos during the commute, and at home, he practiced writing Thai-alphabets on his notebook.

As a result of his effort, he could start utilizing simple Thai expressions into conversations, and communicating with local staff became much easier. Mr. Bae maintains a close relationship with his colleagues visiting their houses and sharing meals on his days off.

| The Leadership of the ‘All-round’ Master

At POSCO Thainox, Mr. Bae is in charge of processing orders acting as a control tower between the production and sales department. He controls and monitors production so that the end product can be delivered on time. Another important task is cooperating with POSCO headquarter in Korea. Mr. Bae adjusts production volumes when the headquarter makes requests for overseas plants to meet the stainless steel supply that the Korean market can’t provide.

Every day, Mr. Bae is busy examining the product storage, coming up with a set of tasks to improve the work environment, and encouraging the employees. The jam-packed schedule, however, has its perks. “Had I stayed in Korea after retirement, I would’ve been left with simple chores. But here, I can really contribute. It’s a great pleasure to be able to help others with my experience even after the retirement,” he said with a big smile.

Ever since the ‘all-around expert’ SV Min Keun Bae joined POSCO Thainox, the company’s long-term inventory has reduced by over 10,000 tons — the long-term payment delay also went down. Bae’s meticulous personality improved the work environment in the plant making POSCO Thainox one of the top manufacturers in Southeast Asia.

The words of advice Mr. Bae would like to offer to those following his footsteps is never to be afraid of new challenges: “What follows inaction? Nothing. If you challenge yourself, there’s always something to be gained — even if you fail. The current failure can help you succeed on your next try.”

To learn more about Mr. Bae’s new life and the challenges he’s taking on at POSCO Thainox, check out the following footage (Korean).

“I’m too old for this… I can’t speak the language…” For POSCO Thainox supervisor Min Keun Bae who constantly challenges himself to learn, these are just excuses standing between him and an opportunity to grow. POSCO Newsroom will always root for the global masters who are advancing POSCO’s frontier spirit in all corners of the world..

The POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation became partners with UNESCO through a signing ceremony at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris. The foundation is the first partner for UNESCO’s Project for Out-of-school Children throughout ASEAN, which starts this year.

Back in September 2016, 28 ASEAN heads of state, education ministers and representatives of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization gathered together and committed to tackling the problem of youth without regular education. The Project for Out-of-school Children in ASEAN is a follow-up to the declaration, and it’s the first project that UNESCO is carrying out this year alongside an enterprise.

The POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation is aiming to leverage the Flexible Learning Strategies (FLS) program developed by UNESCO, to provide alternative education for the children of the underprivileged, ethnic minorities and migrants in cooperation with the education ministries of individual countries.

The 3-year project will be supported by the POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation, using the donated 1 percent of members’ salaries. The project will kickstart in Thailand, where they have the highest percentage of out-of-school children in ASEAN (7.6 percent). POSCO plans to cover 2,000 children in 4 regions (Chiang Rai, Ranong, Songkhla and Rayong) where POSCO Thainox, POSCO-TCS and POSCO-TBPC are based, and expand the project to Indonesia and Myanmar.

“I hope that this partnership with a world-class steelmaker like POSCO will become a model of providing opportunities for quality education to underprivileged children and youths,” said UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay. “I hope that these activities will spread throughout the world, and everyone will make concerted efforts to make sure that the notion of out-of-school children will become a thing of the past.”

At home, one of the core focus areas of the POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation is facilitating the self-reliance of future generations. Starting this year, the foundation increased the number of people eligible to receive support from the Chinchin Rainbow project to 70. The customized career project will support 70 children of migrant families such as multicultural families and North Korean defectors. Last December, it also entered into an MOU with the Children’s Self-Reliance Support Team of Korea Human Resource Development Institute for Health & Welfare to help children transition smoothly from welfare facilities and foster homes to society.

Jeong-shik Kwak, head of the ER Department of POSCO said, “The Thailand love houses are especially meaningful because the employees of POSCO Group donated 1 percent of their salaries and participated in the construction process.
