Development of eco-friendly color steel sheet applied with biomass paint extracted from corn cobs
Plans to acquire UL certificate to supply mass production and expand domestic and overseas sales
Preemptively responds to the demand for carbon reduction in the supply chain through the development of eco-friendly products and technologies
The biomass color steel sheet developed by POSCO Steelon was recently recognized as an eco-friendly product by passing the test of Underwriters Laboratories Inc.(UL), a reliable U.S. certification agency, for the first time in Korea.
Biomass is an eco-friendly raw material made by thermal pyrolysis and fermentation of plants or microorganisms instead of fossil fuels such as petroleum that emit greenhouse gases. Existing general color steel sheets use paints containing petroleum-based raw materials but POSCO Steeleon has newly developed biomass color steel sheets using biomass paint extracted from corn cobs.
In particular, POSCO Steeleon has collaborated with paint companies to ensure that the quality desired by customers can be obtained even if biomass paint is used in existing facilities.
Biomass products are recognized as eco-friendly products only when the content of radioactive carbon isotope (C-14), which exists only in naturally derived materials, is measured and is more than 25% based on the standards of developed countries. POSCO Steeleon focused on the fact that a large part of biomass components evaporated during the production of color steel sheet, and used high-content biomass paints of over 60% to produce color steel sheet.
POSCO Steeleon, which was developed last year, requested a performance test from UL, a global testing agency in the United States, in early January to issue an internationally accepted test report on eco-friendly products, and met the eco-friendly standards by recording 26%, exceeding the standard of 25% in advanced countries such as the U.S. and Japan.
Based on the development of this biomass color steel sheet, POSCO Steeleon plans to continuously develop products with added surface texture and antibacterial performance and to acquire UL certificates to supply mass production and expand sales at home and abroad.
POSCO Steeleon plans to apply biomass to the coated steel sheet process and accelerate the development of eco-friendly manufacturing technologies such as omitting processes and energy-saving manufacturing technology.
POSCO Steelon, which emphasizes eco-friendliness through its color steel sheet brand ‘INFINeLI’, plans to preemptively respond to domestic and international environmental regulations and customers’ demand for carbon reduction in the supply chain through the development of eco-friendly products and technologies.
