2023/12/06

POSCO Group introduced core technologies for eco-friendly future materials and its flagship products, such as Greenate steel and lightweight platform for next-generation EVs.

POSCO Group and global automaker Renault Group agreed to strengthen their existing steel business partnership and expand the technical cooperation scope, including the rechargeable battery materials and hydrogen sectors.

POSCO Group held the “POSCO Group Tech Day” event at the Renault R&D Center in France on November 16 (local time) and introduced core technologies for eco-friendly future materials and its flagship products.

POSCO Group, in close cooperation with Renault Group, one of the global automakers, hosted the Tech Day event to enhance their existing strategic partnership in the steel sector and expand the scope of technical cooperation, including the areas of rechargeable battery materials and hydrogen.

This is the second Tech Day in Renault since 2011. It is part of POSCO Group’s Early Vendor Involvement (EVI) activities involving identifying changes in the future market environment and business needs of client companies and suggesting the development of suitable technologies and products ahead of time.

The event was attended by POSCO Holdings New Experience of Technology Hub Director Ji-yong Kim (Group CTO), POSCO Holdings Rechargeable Battery Materials Research Institute Director Yung-joon Hong, Automotive Materials Marketing Lead Yoo-ran Seo, POSCO Steel Solution Research Institute Director Sung-yeon Kim, Renault Group Engineering & Projects Vice President Cedric Combemorel, and around 600 employees from Renault’s technology and purchasing departments.

On this day, POSCO Group exhibited its flagship steel products in the Renault R&D Center, including vehicle frames, chassis steel plates and electrical steel plates for green vehicle drive motors, as well as rechargeable battery materials such as lithium, nickel and cathode/anode materials and hydrogen business-related technologies. It also discussed various technical cooperation plans with Renault Group in the areas of steel, rechargeable battery materials, and hydrogen vehicles.

In particular, POSCO Group introduced Greenate steel, a lightweight platform for next-generation EVs and multi-materials and discussed a joint technology development plan for Giga steel.

* Greenate steel: A sub-brand of POSCO’s carbon-neutral master brand Greenate, commonly referred to as a carbon-reducing steel product
* Multi-material: A combination of heterogeneous materials to develop high-strength, lightweight materials

POSCO Holdings New Experience of Technology Hub Director Ji-yong Kim said, “POSCO Group will expand its partnership with Renault Group to all areas of eco-friendly future materials, such as rechargeable battery and hydrogen. This aims to foster a strategic partnership focused on achieving carbon neutrality and leading the global green vehicle market.

Renault Group Engineering & Projects Vice President Cedric Combemorel said, “We deeply sympathize with the business vision of POSCO Group as a representative eco-friendly future material manufacturer.” He added, “Let’s cooperate not only in the steel sector but also in all areas of materials.”

POSCO Group has been supplying automotive steel to automakers around the world. It is the only company with a full value chain encompassing the production and supply of raw materials for rechargeable batteries, cathode/anode materials and next-generation materials. POSCO Group plans to ramp up technical cooperation with global automakers in the eco-friendly future material sector in response to the changing green vehicle market, which is projected to continue to grow.
