Super Bowl, one the largest sporting events in North America, just completed its 53rd game last month. Super Bowl 2019 kicked off on February 3, with the Maroon 5 who recently performed in Korea, as its half-time headliner.

Steel is everywhere, and the Super Bowl 2019 is no exception. With POSCO Newsroom, let’s take a journey to explore hidden steel stories across various sites of the Super Bowl 2019:

l 27,000 Tons of Steel, the Backbone of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium

▲ Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Source: Mercedes-Benz Stadium Media Hub)

The Mercedes-Benz Stadium opened in 2017 after a 39-month construction period. With over $1.5 billion that went into the project, it is a cutting-edge, state-of-art stadium and one of the most expensive in the world, along with New York’s Yankees Stadium ($1.5 billion) and Las Vegas Raider Stadium ($2.4 billion).

The Mercedes-Benz Stadium replaces the Georgia Dome, which had served Atlanta as its beloved NFL stadium from 1992 to 2016. The Super Bowl 2019 was especially meaningful because it was being held at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the first time following the demolition of the Georgia Dome in 2017.

There are altogether 32 national football teams across the United States – every year, they compete for a spot in the Super Bowl during the NFL season from September to December. There are 31 NFL stadiums across the country, and five of them are equipped with retractable roof system. Completed in 2017, the roof system at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium is the newest.

The height of the stadium is 93 meters, equivalent of a 30-floor building, and it can accommodate about 71,000 spectators. The steel used for the stadium is about 27,000 tons, 3.2 times more steel than those used for its predecessor Georgia Dome, which used 8,300 tons of steel.

On top of its vast size and the amount of investment, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium also made history for its data usage. During the Super Bowl 2019, the amount of data used on that single day reached 24 terabytes, setting a world record for any single gathering in history. To put it simply, 24 terabytes is the equivalent of transferring 68 million selfies. Compared to the Super Bowl 2018 in Minnesota, the data usage shot up by 48% this year.

The 360-degree video board at the Stadium is 328 meters in circumference and 18 meters in height, allowing the spectators to truly feel the heat of the game.

▲ Atlanta Falcons Sculpture (Source: Mercedes-Benz Stadium Media Hub)

The Mercedes-Benz Stadium is also famous for its unique art collections, with over 180 commissioned works attracting spectators from all over the stadium. Each work honors Georgia fans’ football love and passion. Among all these art collections, the most notable piece is the statue of the Atlanta Falcons.

Named after Atlanta’s home team, Atlanta Falcons, the statue is made of stainless steel by Hungarian sculptor Gábor Miklós Szőke. According to the artist, it is the world’s largest free-standing bird sculpture. The falcon perches on a 4-meter-high bronze football, and is 12 meters high (an equivalent of a 4-story building) with a wingspan of 21 meters. The Atlanta Falcons sculpture weighs over 3.3 tons.

l Tallest Outside New York and Chicago?

The Super Bowl 2019 is Atlanta’s first Super Bowl game in 19 years. As the capital of the state of Georgia, the city also hosted the 1996 Summer Olympics. Though America’s tallest buildings are mostly located in New York or Chicago, Atlanta also has an architectural monument that represents the city: the Bank of America Plaza, the tallest building in the city.

▲ Bank of America Plaza, Atlanta (Source: Pixabay)

It’s no Empire States Building in New York or Chicago’s Willis Tower (previously Sears Tower), but the Bank of America Plaza (hereafter BOA Plaza) was once the highest building outside of New York and Chicago. The 55-story building, measuring 312 meters high, is currently the 16th tallest building in the United States and still the tallest in the Southeastern United States.

Completed in 1992, Bank Plaza has the postmodern art deco style similar to that of New York’s leading steel structure, Chrysler Building. Art deco is characterized by geometric patterns and intense colors and was popular in the United States during the 1920s and 1930s.

▲ The spire of the BOA Plaza (Source: e.kassa, Bank of America Plaza)

The BOA Plaza’s core is made of reinforced concrete. Concrete-encased steel was applied to the columns, and steel was also used as the floor spanning. One of the distinctive features of the BOA Plaza is its pyramid-shaped spire, which is an open frame steel structure with a height of 27 meters. Steel beams support the slabs of the spire’s each floor, and they act as point loads to the columns, which distribute the load onto the foundations.

l Countdown Begins until 2020 Super Bowl

In the 2019 Super Bowl, the 2016 Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots faced the Los Angeles Rams, who was going after their second Super Bowl win. The New England Patriots defeated the LA Rams, winning their sixth Super Bowl.

▲ 2019 Super Bowl Champion, ‘the Pats’ (New England Patriots) celebrating its victory (Source: New England Patriots Press Room)

The Super Bowl 2020 will be held at the Miami Hard Rock Stadium, a multipurpose football stadium located in Miami Gardens, Florida. The Miami Hard Rock Stadium opened in 1987, 30 years before the Mercedes-Benz Stadium opened to the public.

Which two teams will deliver the next game, and what other steel stories are yet to be discovered? The countdown to the Super Bowl 2020 has already begun.

Last year, 144 skyscrapers over 200 meters were built all over the world, setting a new record for the greatest number of skyscrapers built in a single year.

Last year, 144 skyscrapers over 200 meters were built all over the world, setting a new record for the greatest number of skyscrapers built in a single year. The 144 skyscrapers can be found in 69 different cities across 23 countries, but more than half of them were built in China. The tall buildings come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but they have one thing in common: steel is the material serving as the backbone of the grand structures.

This year, more skyscrapers will fill the skylines of cities, mostly in Asia. Continuing on from previous years, cities, architects and the general public alike are favoring low-energy, sustainable buildings and showing a tendency to renovate existing buildings with reinforcements where possible.

Take a look at 2 of the tallest skyscrapers built in 2017, and some of the most exciting building projects coming scheduled for completion in 2018.

2017: Ping An Finance Center

The Ping An Finance Center is located in the city of Shenzhen, and is the second tallest building in China and fourth tallest building in the world. The entire structure measures 599.1 meters, or 1,965 feet, offering 119 floors of office and retail space.

Stainless steel keeps the Ping An Finance Center protected against the strong winds and salty climate of Shenzhen.
The Ping An Finance Center is classified as a composite building, meaning both steel and concrete materials are used to make up the main structural parts of the skyscraper. This can apply to any of the following combinations – steel columns with concrete beam floors, steel structure with a concrete core, steel columns encased in concrete or a system of steel tubes filled with concrete. The exterior is outfitted with a sculpted stainless steel facade for maximum corrosion resistance to coastal climate.

2017: Lotte World Tower

Korea’s Lotte World Tower is the tallest building in Korea and the fifth tallest building in the world measuring 555.7 meters and 1,823 feet from the ground to the very top. Construction began in Seoul back in 2011 and took 7 years to complete. The 129-story building is made of a reinforced concrete core, concrete encased steel columns and steel floor spanning.

Seoul’s Lotte World Tower was built with 40,000 tons of steel.
POSCO supplied the 40,000 tons of steel to build the Lotte World Tower, consisting of both regular and thermomechanical control processed (TMCP) steel. As part of POSCO’s solutions marketing, the company proposed using 120 mm thick high-performance grade steel (SM490TMC) instead of welding 40 mm and 80 mm thick plates together for better performance and cost efficiency. The steelmaker also proposed the use of a steel column flat plate structure and steel piping for enhanced shock, high-wind and fire resistance.

Lotte World Tower also features solar panels, wind turbines and water harvesting systems as part of a sustainable, eco-friendly design.

2018: Hanking Center Tower

The Hanking Center Tower scheduled for completion in March of 2018, will set a new world record as the tallest all-steel building in all of Asia. Most skyscrapers are made of a mixture of concrete and steel, but the Hanking Center Tower is composed of a unique, all-steel structural system. The main body is also detached from the core by about 9 meters, held together by a series of sky bridges and steel braces to allow the building flexibility to withstand seismic activity and maximum exposure to natural light.

The Hanking Center Tower is the tallest all-steel building in Asia. The city government, Boston Properties and Salesforce teamed up to support blackwater reuse that will give tenants of the building access to recycled water. The skyscraper also has net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.

2018: Comcast Technology Center

The 341.7 meters, or 1,121 feet tall Comcast Technology Center opened early this year, and stands as Philadelphia’s tallest skyscraper. The USD 1.6 billion building also has smart features, including a central plant that acts as the brain of the building, using artificial intelligence to learn human patterns.

(Source: The Skyscraper Center)

The skyscraper can track the number of people inside, predict weather patterns and will only generate just enough energy required for any given time. The building also makes use of water running through all parts of the building to cool temperatures and has a special, silver coated glass which can repel heat from the sun. As such, the Comcast Technology Center is one of the most technologically advanced and green buildings in the U.S.

Continuing on from a strong year of construction in 2017, the new skyscrapers of 2018 and beyond will continue to strive for environmental sustainability, incorporate newer technologies and make extensive use of steel for cost efficiency and safety.

Last year, California experienced the worst wildfire season in recent history. The death toll of 43 was higher than the previous 10 years combined, and more than 10,000 buildings and structures were damaged or destroyed. Total damages including insurance and recovery expenditures cost the state an estimated USD 180 billion. Already, California has spent USD 700 million for fire suppression during the fiscal year, far exceeding the USD 426 million budget.

Last year, California experienced the worst wildfires to date. (Source: Live Science)

It wasn’t just wildfires. The fire that broke out in Grenfell Tower in West London last June claimed 71 lives and sparked a public outcry for stricter building regulations around fire safety. The material used as cladding to wrap the outer part of the building came under scrutiny as it was extremely flammable and contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.

To prevent further disasters, architects, builders and policymakers need to reexamine the materials that go into building people’s homes, workplaces and public facilities.

Materials Matter

Steel is one of the most popular materials for construction as it is 100 percent recyclable, cost-effective and easy to work with. Moreover, World Steel Association’s Steel Construction Fact Sheet shows that steel is the most-researched and best-understood construction material available today. Its inherent characteristics and widely-available reinforcement options make steel the safest construction material for fire resistance.

eel is one of the strongest construction materials under high heat. (Source: CIC)

Fire resistance refers to the duration of time a building can withstand the load of the building, limit the passage of flames and gases and insulate the building against rising temperatures during a fire.

Steel is considered to be a fire-resistant material because it can retain all of its strength in temperatures up to 370ºC (700ºF). At 500ºC (930ºF), it loses 30 percent of its strength and at temperatures above 538ºC (1000ºF), unprotected steel loses close to half of its strength.

To put things into perspective, aluminum starts to decrease in strength when temperatures rise above 100ºC (212ºF), and at 204ºC (400ºF), aluminum loses 60 percent of its strength. Copper also loses 25 percent of its strength at 204ºC (400ºF).

Putting Materials to the Test

Darchem Engineering conducted the first-ever fire-resistance test in 1990 comparing galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum and fiberglass. Each material was exposed to temperatures from 1000 to 1050ºC (1832 to 1922ºF) for a period of 5 minutes. Both types of steel passed with minimal damage, while aluminum collapsed after 26 seconds, and fiberglass collapsed almost immediately.

Fire-resistance tests show that stainless steel is one of the most fire-resistant materials available. (Source: Applus)

They also conducted a 2-hour test with the same materials exposed to temperatures from 552 to 555ºC (1026 to 1032ºF). For stainless steel, the testing time was extended to 3 hours and it still had the least amount of damage out of all the materials. Galvanized steel passed the 2-hour mark, but did produce some molten zinc. Aluminum failed after 12 minutes, while fiberglass gave out in 6 minutes.

The results showed that steel, especially stainless steel, is the most fire-resistant material. However, one can never be safe enough when it comes to fire safety, and there are several ways to increase the fire resistance of steel that fall into 3 major categories.

Passive Fire Protection

Passive fire protection methods include boards, sprays and films that insulate the steel surface or structure against high temperatures. Fire protection boards are the most common type of passive fire protection as they can be customized and designed to fit the interior of the building. However, they are quite labor-intensive and costly compared to other options.

Boards are the most common types of passive fire protection. (Source: IPCOM)

Active Fire Protection

Active fire protection refers to any automatic or manual measure that can be taken to detect or fight fires. These include water sprinkler systems, alarms, smoke detectors, first responders and more. With advancements in AI and smart sensors, active fire protection will see vast improvements in the years to come and software systems will likely play a great role in fire prevention and protection.

The majority of active fire protection measures will become automated. (Source: Frontier Fire)

Intumescent fire protection

Intumescent fire protection includes paint-like substances that swell up in high temperatures and act as insulation against the heat. Typically, the intumescent substance will become 50 times thicker than its original state at about 200-250°C, well before steel undergoes any structural damage. Recently, intumescent paints have become much more prominent than passive types of fire protection as they are cost-effective, and can be applied on and off-site saving builders time and money.

Most recently, scientists and engineers from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and national industrial developer JTC Corporation came up with a new intumescent fire protection paint called Firoshield. It is much cheaper than other types of intumescent paint and takes half the time to apply. The innovation will allow steel buildings to maintain its structural integrity for 2 hours with only 5 layers of paint, compared to the 15 layers required by other paints.

Such innovations are expected to reinforce the safety of steel buildings, giving people more time for evacuation and limiting the spread of smoke and flames. On a final note, the fire-resistant qualities of steel should be taken into consideration not only for building frames and exteriors, but also for staircases, doors and other parts of a building that must stay intact for safe evacuations as well as for the safety of first responders.
