POSCO’s Consolidated Operating Profit has exceeded 927 million dollars for last three consecutive quarters.

POSCO has announced its financial reports at Investor Relation (IR) conference call on April 24th that its first quarter consolidated sales were up to 14.7 billion dollars and its consolidated operating profit was 1.4 billion dollars. The consolidated net profit was approximately 1 billion dollars.

POSCO’s consolidated profits indicates positive sign for both domestic and overseas

Reach to 14.7 billion dollars consolidated sales, 1.4 billion dollars in consolidated operating profit

Sales, operating profit and net profit has elevated by 5.2%, 9% and 10.9% compared to the previous year. This impressive achievement is done by the improvement of both domestic and overseas steel production and non-steel affiliates.

Non-consolidated sales of 7.7 billion dollars and 946 million dollars of operating profit.

PT. KRAKATAU POSCO, which is an integrated steel mill in Indonesia also turn into profit from the third quarter. Despite of decrease of steel bar and shaped steel plant from POSCO SS VINA in Vietnam, operating profit has increased gradually. This great performance of oversea steel subsidiaries gives positive indication of growth in sales.

Its non-consolidated sales rate has increased by 9.8% year-on-year to 7.7 billion dollars. Also, the proportion of the sales of World Premium products went up by 1.4% year-on-year to 54.9%.

Increased sales of high-value-added products, cost reduction, continued improvement of profitability, and the increased price of steel were the driving force of increasing operating profit margin from 1.8%p year-on-year to 13.1%.

Future is even brighter

POSCO expects that demand of steel will continuously increase on the back of steady restructuring of the Chinese steel industry and recovery of emerging economies. POSCO still also continue to secure financial soundness, reducing costs, and expanding high value-added sales.
All those efforts of POSCO brought impressive result of increasing consolidated and non-consolidated sales to 58.4 billion dollars and 27.9 billion dollars.

On April 1st, the 50th anniversary of POSCO, named ‘Future Vision Ceremony’ was successfully held. The main topic of the anniversary was not only celebrating 50th years POSCO’s efforts both industrial and social fields but also suggestion of future directions of POSCO, ‘Missions and Visions’

‘Unlimit the limt: Steel and Beyond’

POSCO is dreaming of KRW 500 trillion in consolidated sales in 2068, the 100th anniversary of the company.

On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, POSCO held the ceremony to declare its future vision, and announced the mission and vision as a global centennial enterprise at the POSTECH gymnasium at the 50th anniversary of POSCO on April 1, and announced its mission and vision of being one of the true global centennial enterprises.

The new mission of the global centennial enterprise POSCO, which POSCO CEO Ohjoon Kwon detailed in the form of his TED Talk, is ‘Unlimit the Limit: Steel and Beyond.’ This mission, which was finalized after a few months of intensive debate among executives, means that POSCO will capitalize on its past 50-year history of challenges to become a power in the future not only in steel, but also in non-steel areas.

To this end, POSCO is seeking to change its current revenue streams, in which about 80% of the group’s profits come from steel and steel-related areas, in which profits will come evenly from the top three core business groups, i.e. steel, infrastructure and new growth engines, at a ratio of 4:4:2. POSCO aims to see its consolidated sales reach KRW 500 trillion and its operating profits reach KRW 70 trillion in 2068, its 100th anniversary.

In addition to its primary business, i.e. steel, POSCO will concentrate on such infrastructure areas as trading, construction, energy and ICT were included, and such new-growth areas as energy storage materials and light-weight materials.

The vision, which was declared along with the mission, is ‘POSCO the Great.’ ‘POSCO the Great’ was the slogan that CEO Kwon used when he was first inaugurated as CEO in 2014 to revive POSCO which faced a crisis at the time. Now the slogan has become more systematic: Great Business, Great Technology and Great Culture. It means pushing the business structure, technology and organizational culture to the highest level.

As POSCO has contributed to the country and society through steel and educational patriotism, at a time when the company is celebrating its 50th anniversary and starting its march forward toward a centennial enterprise, it decided to conduct business that will repay the country in addition to declaring its mission and vision.

POSCO supports Youth

In return for the country’s unsparing support and the citizens’ enthusiastic support which made POSCO what it is today, POSCO opted to construct the ‘Youth Creativity Center’ (tentative), which features various contents, including the Science and Experience Center in Seoul Forest, located in the center of the capital city of Korea, and donate it to the nation.

The ‘Youth Creativity Center’ will become a learning center where youths, who will lead the country into the future, can easily understand the principles of technology and science through experience, and translate their creative ideas into reality.

Also, the center will have various concert halls and exhibition halls so that anyone can easily enjoy culture and art in everyday life.

If the international design competition for world-renowned architects is held this year, it will reveal its splendor as being the best science and culture complex in Korea.

The POSCO Center in Seoul, which was erected more than 20 years ago, now features a new product exhibition hall that will familiarize citizens with steel, and show customers the future vision of steel, and added a 30-seat PR video center. The product exhibition hall displays various industries demanding steel in the future, and state-of-the-art steel products, and allows visitors to experience the various uses of steel used in our everyday lives using the cartoon and touch technique in a fun way. At the PR video center, visitors can watch POSCO PR videos, and view a steel mill in 3D imagery.

Close to people

On its 50th anniversary, POSCO, which has contributed to the growth of the country with steel, will air a TV ad, which reflects its will to transcend beyond steel, ‘50-Year Challenge and 100-Years New Dream’ until June 10, and the POSCO Art Museum in the first lower level of the POSCO Center will host the ‘Homage to POSCO’ exhibition until May 8. The artworks embodying the growth and rebirth of POSCO will be on display. Also, the POSCO Museum in Pohang will host the ‘Half-Century Video Records of POSCO,’ which introduces various images and historical materials which recorded its 50-year history of growth, until June 30.

In addition, until the end of May, POSCO will prepare an opportunity for the CEO and employees to communicate and harmonize with one another in Seoul, Pohang and Gwangyang with the aim of strengthening the solidarity among employees marching toward a centennial enterprise.

POSCO always stands with country

POSCO’s 50-year history is in true sync with the history of the growth of the Korean economy. POSCO has never stopped growing for half a century since its foundation, and continued to turn profits without ever running into the red and still contributes to the economic development of the country.

POSCO was established in 1968, and molten metal was first produced in 1973. Its sales amounted to KRW 41.6 billion in that year, and increased 686 times last year to KRW 28,553.8 billion. Korea’s per capita GDP was merely US$ 198 in 1968, but it increased about 140 times in 2016 to US$ 27,539.

As POSCO grew and its steel production increased, domestic industries such as automobiles and shipbuilding continuously grew as well. In 1973, when POSCO started to produce molten metal for the first time, POSCO’s steel production amounted to 449,000 tons, but in 2017, it rose to 37.2 million tons. Likewise, Korea’s shipbuilding tonnage increased from 12,000 tons in 1973 to 23.5 million tons, and automobile production rose from 25,000 cars to 4.11 million cars.

POSCO has also grown remarkably in terms of technology. The FINEX technology, which replaces the modern blast furnace with more than 100 years of history, is an environmentally-friendly and economical innovative technology. POSCO independently developed and commercialized this. Also, in 2013, the company completed the construction of Southeast Asia’s first integrated steel mill in Indonesia. Just 40 years after POSCO owned the first integrated steel mill with the help of Japanese steelmakers in 1970, it grew so big as to build an integrated steel mill in a foreign country on its own, and transformed itself from a technological follower to a technological leader.

Also, POSCO sold 9 million-odd tons of automotive steel last year, which accounts for about 25% of its total sales, the largest proportion among major global automotive steelmakers and sellers. One out of every 10 cars sold in the world is made of POSCO’s automotive steel.

Smarter POSCO

Recently, the company built its own smart factory platform called PosFrame, leading the smartization of the global steel industry.

In recognition of its excellent business performance, competitiveness and sustainability management, POSCO has been selected by WSD as one of the ‘world’s most competitive steelmakers’ for the past 8 consecutive years since 2010, and in the global sustainability management evaluation, it has been selected as an excellent company in sustainability and as the best company in the steel industry for the past 13 consecutive years, dating back to 2005. It has remained in this honorable position for the longest time in Korea.

For the future, ‘Unlimit the Limit’

Ohjoon Kwon the CEO of POSCO disclosed POSCO’s new future slogan ‘Unlimit the Limit: Steel and Beyond’ by using TED speech method that is currently considered as one of the most efficient speech method. The mission that has been made based on POSCO’s challenges for 50 years history, is expressed the will of POSCO to ‘overcome the limit and go further to the next step’ especially challenging to non-steel industry.

POSCO is developing a plan to shift gradually from current profit system that 80% of income from steel industry to new profit system that produces profit from 3 different industrial fields: Steel, Infrastructure, New Growth in the ratio of 4:4:2. By successfully operating new profit system, POSCO expects that the mission can be accomplished by 2068 sales up to 500 billion dollars and 70 billon dollars of operating profit.

POSCO is focusing balance of 3 core elements, business, technology, culture. (Source:Bitcoinmagazine)

POSCO’s Perspective: Harmony of business, technology and culture

POSCO’s future vision also has been announced as ‘POSCO the Great’. This was the slogan that Ohjoon Kwon introduced as he had been elected as CEO of POSCO in 2014. The slogan was focused on simply recovering the strength. However, the new slogan is ‘Great Business, Great Technology and Great Culture’ indicating well-organized business structure, advanced technology and organizational culture.

POSCO has contributed significant impact on both Korean country and society in terms of steel and educational support. And POSCO has decided to keep supporting business for the country.

One of the plans that POSCO is contemplating, is establishment of the place for developing creativity for adolescent.

The ’Youth Creativity Center’(tentative) is going to be designed to provide various opportunities to adolescents such as giving experience to understand basic understanding of scientific technology and opportunity to improve creativity.

Furthermore, the ‘Youth Creativity Center’ will contain diverse spaces for culture and arts so all generations will be easy to access. POSCO is expecting the Youth center may be a competitive candidate on coming international contests.

Seoul POSCO center has opened a new product exhibition hall to communicate more with general populations and show their future vision. The exhibition hall has 30 seats visual promotion room. The room provides POSCO promotion videos and visualized POSCO images by 3D technique. Various animations and techniques are prepared to describe steels that are being used in our life and industrial demands of steel for future.

For celebrating 50th anniversary, POSCO will broadcast TV commercial named ’50 years challenge, New Dreams for next 100 years’ until June 10th and POSCO exhibition (Homage to POSCO) will be held in POSCO art gallery in lower ground level until May 8th.
POSCO is also preparing the event that gives valuable opportunities to share thoughts between CEO and employees in Seoul, Po hang, Kwang yang city.

‘Together the Better’, POSCO and Korea have strong bond in all history

True companion of Korean history

50 years of POSCO’s history is in the same line with Korean history which means that POSCO has been increasing growth for half century. POSCO was established in 1968, and the very first steel was manufactured in 1973. Since that year, total sales of POSCO has incredibly elevated by 686 times last year from 1973.

Growth of POSCO gave great influence on major industry in Korea. Especially Korean automobile and shipbuilding industry had similar growth curve which means that materials manufactured from POSCO was true backbone for those industries. For instance, Korean ship manufacturing has reached to 23.5 million tons from 12 thousand tones from 1973. And automobile production also increased 4.11 million from 25 thousand cars.

SEE ALSO: What are Automobiles Made of?

Technology is another fundamental aspect of POSCO’s strength. POSCO has developed eco&efficient furnace by its own technology called ‘FINEX’ technology which fully satisfied current and future global trends, environmental and innovative. With this advanced technology, POSCO has exported its unique iron making technique in China in 2013. This describes that POSCO is global technology provider.

In addition, POSCO is the global top company that produces steel for vehicles. Approximately 9 million tons of steel for vehicle has been produced from POSCO which indicates that 25% of steel for car manufacturing is from POSCO. Simply 1 in 10 cars in global, uses steel from POSCO.

Relationship of growth between GDP per person in Korea and production of steel of POSCO

POSCO has established its own smart platform named ‘PosFrame’ that made POSCO is global leading steel company for smartization.

With all these achievements, POSCO has been listed in ‘worlds most competitive steel maker’by World Steel Dynamics for 8 consecutive years since 2010. Also POSCO has been top ranked in SAM-Dow Jones Sustainability index since 2005.

POSCO opened its first-ever structural steel solution center abroad in Vietnam. The opening ceremony was held on February 7 at POSCO SS VINA, attended by some 50 officials including Oh In-hwan (COO, POSCO), Ho Nghia Dung (President, Vietnam Steel Association) and Bui Anh Hoa (Vice President, Hanoi University of Science and Technology).

In recent years, Vietnam has undergone rapid urbanization with subsequent advancements in housing, energy and infrastructure. As such, demand for structural steel is expected to reach 24 million tons by 2020. The figures represent 80 percent of Vietnam’s entire steel demand, making Vietnam a booming market for steel consumption in Southeast Asia.

As the Vietnamese construction industry is projected to see an annual growth rate of 7 percent for the next 10 years, POSCO plans to pursue preemptive solution marketing activities with local affiliates such as POSCO SS VINA and POSCO-VST.

POSCO SS VINA will supply Vietnam’s growing structural steel demand.

They also look to cooperate with local organizations to maximize benefits for their clients, by providing support for a wide range of technologies related to molding, binding, improved performance and structuralization.

Additionally, POSCO intends to promote packaged marketing services for large-scale projects to offer various products such as R.H. (ROLLED H-BEAM), BH (Built up H-Beam) and steel bars in one batch.

POSCO is organizing 3 separate departments – the Solution Planning Department, Solution Development Department and Technical Services Department – to successfully create, develop and implement a local, customized marketing strategy. A total of 25 experienced construction experts will serve as consultants.

In January, POSCO also established a “Solutions Marketing Center” under its base corporation in Vietnam and China to provide support for its increased production and sales worldwide.

On January 24, POSCO announced its consolidated sales of KRW 60.6551 trillion, operating profit of KRW 4.6218 trillion and a net profit of KRW 2.9735 trillion.

On January 24, POSCO announced its consolidated sales of KRW 60.6551 trillion, operating profit of KRW 4.6218 trillion and a net profit of KRW 2.9735 trillion. The company first reached KRW 60 trillion in sales in 2011 and kept it up for 4 years. However, sales dropped down to around KRW 50 trillion in 2015 due to restructuring, and now it is finally back to KRW 60 trillion. Last year’s sales were significant as the company reached KRW 60 trillion after cutting back ties with over 80 affiliates both in Korea and overseas.

With the performance increase in both steel and non-steel businesses in Korea and overseas, operating profit was highest it’s been in the last 6 years, and the operating profit to sales ratio was 7.6 percent. Year-on-year consolidated sales increased by 14.3 percent and operating profit and net profit increased by 62.5 percent and 183.7 percent respectively.

The total operating profit of POSCO’s non-steel businesses, which reached KRW 10 billion last year, also turned into a surplus. There was an overall increase in non-steel businesses including trade, energy, ICT, chemicals and materials, resulting in KRW 1.0927 trillion of profits, up KRW 1.0798 trillion from last year.

This is in line with POSCO CEO Ohjoon Kwon’s strategy to focus on group management by securing future growth engines and reforming non-steel businesses.

Indonesia’s PT. KRAKATAU POSCO, POSCO’s first overseas integrated steel mill, turned profitable after 4 years of operations and exceeded 10 million tons of steel in cumulative sales.

PT. KRAKATAU POSCO sold 1.7 million tons of steel in 2014, its first year of operation, then increased its sales to 2.8 million tons in 2016. The company’s annual sales volume has increased continuously, and its cumulative sales reached 10 million tons as of January 15, 2018. Last year’s tentative performance showed an operating profit of about USD 12 million, enabling the company to turn a profit for the first time.

PT. KRAKATAU POSCO, which began operations in December 2013, is the first integrated steel mill in Southeast Asia with a production capacity of 3 million tons. POSCO and Indonesia’s state-operated steelmaker Krakatau Steel invested 70 percent and 30 percent respectively.

After 4 years of hard work, PT. KRAKATAU POSCO is now the leading steelmaker in Southeast Asia.

Instead of resorting to imports, Indonesia can now procure high-quality steel products from PT. KRAKATAU POSCO, greatly enhancing the competitiveness of Indonesia’s steel-consuming industries.

PT. Bukaka Teknik, manufacturing steel-frame structures, is planning to purchase 120,000 tons of thick plates from PT. KRAKATAU POSCO, and construct Indonesia’s first steel-framed elevated expressway, and PT. Kenertec, Korindo Heavy Industry’s wind turbine tower production subsidiary, will build wind power generators and wind turbine towers with PT. KRAKATAU POSCO steel for export to the US and Europe.

PT. KRAKATAU POSCO also plans to further reinforce partnerships with local steelmakers and increase investments in downstream industries to continue providing quality steel products to its partners in Southeast Asia.

POSCO is the world’s 5th largest steel producer, but it’s got more up its sleeves than just steel. This year, POSCO developed game-changing technology that extracts lithium from water in just 8 hours to one month. Traditionally the task takes anywhere from 12 to 18 months. To add, the new technology can achieve a purity rate of 99.9 percent and increases the lithium recovery rate to over 80 percent.

Lithium is a central component in rechargeable batteries for electronics such as smartphones, laptops and most importantly, electric vehicles (EVs). Heading into 2018, POSCO is well-positioned to be an industry leader in a rapidly-growing market for EV batteries.

Zoepf shared his vision of what the future automotive market will look like and its implications for car manufacturers, suppliers and drivers. According to research, 60 percent of the cars in the U.S. will be running on electric batteries by 2030, and those cars will mostly be part of a shared mobility service. Traditional ways of car production, distribution and consumption will undergo massive change and companies will have to find ways to stay competitive in the new market dynamics.

The fate of widespread electric vehicle (EV) adoption lies in the car battery. So far, automakers have achieved a range of 100 to 300 miles on a single charge, but it’s still not enough to calm drivers’ range anxiety or compete with traditional fuel options. Ultimately, drivers want an affordable long-range EV with super fast charge, factors that are often at odds with each other.

<img class="wp-image-13295" src="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/EVs-1024x509.jpg" alt="A street lined with EV charging stations and EVs.
Even though EVs make up about 1 percent of total new car sales in the U.S., EVs are on a steady, steep path upwards. According to a report by Bloomberg New Energy Finance, EVs will make up 54 percent of new car sales by 2040, and by 2029, EVs will be cheaper to buy than gasoline and diesel-fueled cars.

The figures are significant and will translate into a sharp increase in demand for rechargeable batteries and their materials.

The Evolution of EV Batteries

Before diving into the juicy details, it’s always helpful to cover the basics. Batteries are made up of 3 main components. The anode, or negative electrodes, the cathode, or positive electrodes and some type of electrolyte through which the electrodes travel to release chemical energy.

<img class="wp-image-13297" src="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Potato-Battery-1024x576.jpg" alt=" A lightbulb lights up thanks to a simple potato battery cell. (Source: Tested)

The first rechargeable battery, lead-acid battery, was invented in 1859 by a physicist named Gaston Plante. Lead dioxide was the cathode material used, and lead was the anode material with a liquid solution of sulphuric acid and water as the electrolyte. The materials were affordable and the battery was applied to many early models of EVs, including early models of the Tesla Model S.

Another widely used battery that came after the lead-acid battery is the nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery developed at the Battelle-Geneva Research Center in 1967. Nickel hydroxide was used as the cathode material while a hydrogen-absorbing alloy was used as the anode material. A liquid solution served as electrolytes. The research for NiMH batteries was extensive, and funded jointly by Daimler-Benz and Volkswagen AG. The batteries were also applied to many EV models such as the Toyota Prius, prior to 2015.

The Advent of Lithium-Ion Batteries

The introduction of lithium-ion batteries was a game-changer. Sony first introduced them in 1991, and today, most EVs have them, including the Tesla Model 3. The batteries consist of lithium-cobalt oxide cathodes, graphite anodes and the electrolyte is usually a solution of lithium salt and an organic solvent, though some automakers are experimenting with solid-state electrolytes.

The Tesla Model 3 has a lithium-ion battery.
Compared to its predecessors, lithium-ion batteries have the highest amount of stored energy and specific power, which is kind of like horsepower for electric cars. As a result of improved technology and lower costs, lithium-ion batteries are projected to make up 70 percent of the total rechargeable battery market by 2025, which will be worth roughly USD 112 billion.

Good as Gold

It is estimated that every 1 percent increase of EVs in the auto market will result in an additional 70,000 tons of lithium demand LCE per year.

In 2016, Australia topped the list for the most lithium produced with 14,300 metric tons. China and Zimbabwe are also top contenders producing 2000 and 900 metric tons in 2016, respectively. Then, there are the South American countries of Argentina, Chile, and Bolivia, also referred to as the “lithium triangle,” and home to 75 percent of the world’s lithium supply.

Workers at a brine pool at the Rockwood Lithium Plant on the Atacama salt flat.
Does that mean the world has enough lithium to fuel the cars of tomorrow? The answer is yes, but there aren’t enough mines to produce them. In order to prevent environmental damage and the exploitation of unprotected workers, lithium producers have to get smart about lithium mining and production.

POSCO’s Lithium Production

Starting in 2010, POSCO and the Research Institute of Industrial Science & Technology (RIST) teamed up to develop a chemically based lithium extraction technology. The innovation cut down extraction time from up to 18 months down to between 8 hours and 1 month, delivering a purity rate of 99.9 percent. The recovery rate of lithium also increased to over 80 percent. POSCO is the world’s first corporation to commercialize the technology.

It’s also at the heart of the lithium triangle. POSCO currently operates facilities in Chile’s Maricunga Salt Lake, Argentina’s Cauchari Salt Lake and Argentina’s Pozuelos Salt Lake, which alone will boost POSCO’s annual lithium production to 2,500 tons. POSCO also opened its first battery production plant in Korea earlier this year.

The future of EVs is promising thanks to advancements being made in electric batteries, and there’s a lot at stake for the health and well being of future generations. Increasingly, the availability and costs of EV battery materials will play a vital role in market outcomes and widespread EV adoption. It is vital for companies like POSCO to provide abundant, sustainable and cost-friendly EV battery materials so automakers can continue to enhance the batteries of tomorrow’s cars.

It entails POSCO’s involvement in its partners’ projects from the beginning stages of development as more than just a steel supplier.

Since 2014, sales of products combined with Solution Marketing have tripled, and sales of POSCO’s World Premium Products (WPP) have increased by 56 percent.

It Wasn’t Always Smooth Sailing

When the 2008 global financial crisis hit, the global economy as a whole suffered. The steel industry experienced stagnant growth, even in its subsequent recovery. From 2012 to 2016, annual steel sales remained fixed at 35 million tons.

<img class="wp-image-13224" src="https://newsroom.posco.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/The-2008-Financial-Crisis.jpg" alt="A man on Wall Street sits at his desk with his hands on the back of his head staring at his computer screens that show financial stocks.
The main culprit for the slow recovery was overproduction, mostly from the heavily-subsidized Chinese steel industry.
In order to stay competitive in a stagnant market, POSCO made the decision to focus on Solution Marketing and the sales of its World Premium Products (WPP) such as POSCO GIGA STEEL for cars and PosMAC for solar panels.

Solution Marketing involves hyper-customization for POSCO’s partners to deliver optimal material solutions for their products. Some notable projects this year have been with automakers GM Korea and Ssangyong Motors for the launch of their new models made of POSCO GIGA STEEL. POSCO gave them full support from development and R&D to testing and post-production evaluations, redefining the role of a steel supplier.

Cultivating the Industry

Following its continued success with Solution Marketing, POSCO is now determined to share its insights and technology with up and coming small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). POSCO has completed 32 shared-growth projects through which they work with SMEs to develop ways to cut costs, improve the quality of their work, provide financial assistance and education and training.

One of the most recent projects for shared growth is a collaborative business model called “System Construction” that provides a framework for effective technical cooperation among POSCO’s partners in the construction industry. The model was developed jointly with NI Steel and entails systemizing composite materials such as beams, floor decks, exterior panels and roofing materials, all based on joint R&D from both parties.

On October 26, Moody’s, an international credit rating agency, upgraded the outlook for POSCO’s long-term corporate credit rating of Baa2 from “stable” to “positive.” The last time POSCO’s credit rating outlook saw an upgrade was a year ago in October, when Moody’s upgraded POSCO’s credit rating outlook from “negative” to “stable.”

Moody’s forecasted that POSCO’s financial status will improve in the next 1-2 years as a result of increased profits from the sales of POSCO’s high-value-added products and decreased borrowings due to the improvement of global market conditions. In particular, the ratings agency predicted that POSCO’s EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) will increase by 20-25 percent over the previous year, and its debt to EBITDA ratio will decline from 4.1 times to 2.8 times in the next 12-18 months.

Moody’s added that its affiliate, POSCO E&C, will also see its profitability improve in the future.

POSCO has reinforced the competitiveness of its steel business and improved its financial health and profitability since the inauguration of POSCO CEO Ohjoon Kwon in 2014, despite an unfavorable external environment marked by the global oversupply of steel and reinforced protectionism around the world.

POSCO has also been attaining its restructuring goal (149 cases) since 2014, and completed 146 cases of restructuring as of Q317, and should the company complete its restructuring by the end of this year, the number of POSCO’s domestic affiliates will be cut down to 38.

Its financial strength has also improved. POSCO’s consolidated debt ratio of Q3 dropped down by 1.5%p QoQ to 68.1%, the lowest ever since 2010, and its separate debt ratio was 16.3 percent, the lowest ever in its history.

POSCO increased its consolidated and separate sales projections by KRW 4.7 trillion and KRW 3.2 trillion, respectively, to KRW 59.5 trillion and KRW 28.8 trillion compared to its plans at the beginning of the year.

POSCO predicts that steel demand will continue to increase based on the restructuring of the Chinese steel industry, along with the anticipated robust growth of demand in emerging and developing countries. It plans to make continued efforts to generate revenues by securing financial strength, reducing costs and increasing the sales of high-value-added products.
