<p>Humanoid robots—machines designed to resemble humans—have appeared throughout history, sometimes as loyal assistants, other times as perceived threats. Examples include the bronze giant Talos from ancient Greek and Roman mythology, the water-clock-powered automaton of China’s Han Dynasty, and Leonardo da Vinci’s “robot knight” from the Renaissance. Across ancient civilizations, human-like machines have emerged in various forms.</p>
<p>Interest in humanoid robots has endured for centuries, accompanied by caution over potential risks. Notably, science fiction writer Isaac Asimov introduced the Three Laws of Robotics in his 1942 short story Runaround, raising philosophical questions about the relationship between humans and machines.</p>

<p>The rapid advancement of AI in recent years suggests that robotics may evolve toward a humanoid robots-centered future. While a “machine” is generally defined as a tool designed to perform production activities using power, a “robot” is an intelligent machine capable of making autonomous decisions under certain conditions.</p>
<p>Modern humanoid robots go further, combining advanced AI with a human-like form factor—a body structure modeled on human anatomy—allowing them to learn work methods, optimize performance, and actively assist in a wide range of human activities.</p>

<p>The concept of Physical AI is also gaining attention. Physical AI refers to AI embedded in physical devices—such as robots or autonomous vehicles—that interact directly with the real world. Traditional AI communicated with humans through digital interfaces like text or images, but Physical AI operates in real-world environments, collaborating with humans, perceiving surroundings, and responding accordingly. At CES 2025, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang identified Physical AI as a major future growth driver, emphasizing NVIDIA’s role at the center of this technological shift.</p>

<p>Humanoid robots are gaining social acceptance and technological attention for two main reasons: form factor suitability and socio-economic potential.</p>
<h3><strong><b><span style="background-color: #e0ecf8;">1. Form Factor Perspective</span></b></strong></h3>
<p>Robots designed for specific repetitive tasks benefit from specialized form factors. However, for Physical AI performing diverse, non-specialized actions in real-world environments, a human-like form factor is advantageous because our physical infrastructure is built for human proportions.</p>
<p>Door handles, stair dimensions, and control panel placements are all designed for human use. Humanoid robots can operate in these environments without costly infrastructure changes, offering high versatility. In contrast, having different standards for each form factor would be inefficient.</p>
<h3><strong><b><span style="background-color: #e0ecf8;">2. Socio-Economic Perspective</span></b></strong></h3>
<p>Humanoid robots’ human-like appearance enables a wide range of human-robot collaboration scenarios, extending beyond manufacturing into customer service, caregiving, education, and guidance. Recent advances in language processing, facial expression recognition, and gesture control have improved emotional engagement, signaling the evolution of robots into social entities.</p>
<p>However, psychological barriers remain. Masahiro Mori, Professor Emeritus at Tokyo Institute of Technology, proposed the Uncanny Valley theory, which suggests that robots that look too human can cause discomfort. This highlights the need to consider psychological acceptance and emotional distance alongside technical perfection.</p>
<p>Economically, humanoid robots are highly promising. Their development requires not only AI but also sensors, actuators, motion control systems, and energy supply technologies. These demands drive innovation across multiple industries, making humanoid robots development a potential growth engine for the future.</p>

<p>Morgan Stanley’s February 2025 report divides the humanoid robots industry value chain into three core areas: Brain, Body, and Integrator, and identifies potential players in each.</p>
<p><strong>• Brain:</strong> Combines software and hardware. Software includes AI models, data science, simulation technology, and vision software. Hardware includes memory and vision computing.<br />
<strong>• Body:</strong> Includes actuators, components, motors, sensors, batteries, power semiconductors, analog semiconductors, aluminum casting, connectors, heat treatment, and automation systems.<br />
<strong>• Integrator:</strong> Companies that assemble and integrate the brain and body into finished products. Potential players include Hyundai Motor, Boston Dynamics, Apple, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Alibaba, Amazon, Naver, ABB, and KUKA.</p>

<p>The emerging humanoid robots industry is being led by Tesla and NVIDIA, each pursuing distinct strategies.</p>
<p>Tesla is leveraging its expertise in EV production and autonomous driving to develop Optimus, a humanoid robot intended to automate production lines. First unveiled at Tesla AI Day in 2021, Optimus has evolved to perform a variety of tasks. The 2024 Optimus 2 features 40 actuators—12 in the hands alone—allowing it to perform delicate actions such as cracking an egg. Tesla plans to enter the humanoid robots sales market in 2026.</p>
<p>NVIDIA, on the other hand, aims to dominate the humanoid robots “Brain” platform rather than build its own robot. Its Jetson Thor computer, based on the latest Blackwell GPU architecture, enables large-scale AI inference and vision-based decision-making directly on local devices—capabilities previously limited to server environments.</p>
<p>Tesla’s approach resembles Apple’s integrated hardware-software model, while NVIDIA’s strategy is akin to Android’s platform dominance.</p>

<p>In addition to these global leaders, Hyundai Motor introduced its humanoid robot Atlas at CES 2026. Purpose-built for industrial and logistics operations, Atlas offers advanced mobility, precise manipulation capabilities, and seamless integration with Hyundai’s autonomous vehicle and smart factory ecosystems. The debut underscores Hyundai’s ambition to position itself as a key integrator in the humanoid robots value chain, capitalizing on its manufacturing expertise, robotics R&amp;D, and global production footprint.</p>

<p>Following smartphones and EVs, the world has lacked a clear driver of technological innovation—until humanoid robots emerged as the next catalyst. As a convergence of cutting-edge technologies, humanoid robots are recognized as a key area for future growth, though challenges remain in cost competitiveness and safety in human-machine collaboration.</p>
<p>Importantly, the humanoid robots industry’s impact will extend beyond AI and software into materials, components, and services. Development and standardization will require core components that meet both functionality and reliability, along with mass production capabilities. In the service sector, opportunities will arise in humanoid robots deployment, human-robot collaboration models, and humanoid robots training and operation.</p>
<p>In June 2025, the Korean government launched the K-Humanoid Robots Alliance, a national robotics and AI consortium involving over 40 domestic industry, academic, and research institutions. AI companies and experts are collaborating with universities to develop AI models for robot manufacturers, with field trials supported by demand-side companies such as POSCO Group.For example, Aei Robot has signed MOUs with POSCO E&amp;C and HD Hyundai Mipo Shipyard to develop humanoid robots for construction sites and shipyards.</p>
<p>Humanoid robots have moved beyond simple robotics to become a central axis of next-generation industrial innovation. Understanding and responding strategically to the technological, industrial, and service trends surrounding their evolution is more important than ever.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Over the summer holidays, my students and I returned from a field trip to Silicon Valley where we observed its latest technology and trends. Although its main up-and-coming tech such as AI(Artificial intelligence)/Big Data, robot technology, AR/VR, autonomous car, and blockchain was more or less what we expected, we learned a great deal from observing new studies on the front line while witnessing them create opportunities for new enterprises.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">What was apparent were the companies investing huge sums into what they consider core technology— AI and big data. Indeed, companies dominating the media have recently adopted AI as their core technology. Amazon had already employed AI technology in their product recommendation engine and dynamic pricing. More recently, Amazon has changed the landscape in retail markets by launching its systems such as Amazon Go and Amazon Drone Delivery.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">These new endeavors have indeed adopted what is called deep learning. The photo below was taken at NVIDIA headquarters, the company that had its share price skyrocket higher than any other company over the last two years. The big sign, “i am ai” at the entrance suggests the company’s current business disposition at a glance.</span></p>

<h2><b>AI Charts a New Course in the Market </b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">AI technology application in the healthcare field is significantly broadening the possibilities of advancement in the medical industry. The screening device for diabetic retinopathy released in April is the first device that does not require the diagnosis of a doctor, unquestionably outmatching previous ones that aided the professionals’ diagnosis. And there are new services combining basic medical information with data generated from wearables predicting the possibility of Parkinson’s disease based on footstep analysis. These innovations are highly anticipated as the future trend that will shape the medical industry. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Retail and healthcare are merely two specific industries among other extensive areas that have adopted artificial intelligence technology. A case in point is POSCO’s accomplishments in process optimization and a decrease in error rates with the application of AI in automatic defect detection and system management automation. POSCO adopted the chatbot based on these frameworks while company-wide efforts are in motion such as conducting training courses for in-house employees in artificial intelligence specialist programs. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We may commonly recall AIs as robots in movies such as “HER” and “Ex Machina” that imitate our thoughts and actions. This is, however, not the case. Humans have imitated birds to fly only to no avail, yet later realized the principle behind aviation, and thus invented the airplane. Likewise, there is not much basis to the assumption that artificial intelligence should coincide with our psychology and decision-making process. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On this account, distinguishing strong AI from weak AI is not a relevant matter either. We do not yet comprehend the concept of a strong AI’s “perception”. For now, it is essential to devise a detailed plan to apply its technology by understanding the current AI technology and its future course. </span></p>

<h2><b>Data-driven AI to Surpass Human Intelligence</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">How advanced is the current AI technology? Deep learning which was released since 2012 created the age of data-driven artificial intelligence with the evolution of computing and new algorithms. Previous age of AI was based on the logic produced by humans which was fed into computer algorithms. To determine a defect, the computer would logically define it(say a clothing with considerable lint and measurement that exceeds the standard of 0.05 mm) first and confirm whether this fault fits the definition. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A recent data-driven AI is fed a considerable amount of data through the method of induction which the computer then independently recognizes patterns. This is a substantial change from the previous logic-based approach. AI has now advanced to the stage where a human no longer needs to provide the reasoning, but simply providing data enables the computer to reason by itself. The change from human-based logic to a data-driven algorithm that independently recognizes patterns foretells a greater shift than we could image.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"> The fact that AI started to reason after providing data conveys that we will be experiencing a future with a computer system that reaches new dimensions. As the computer can make assessments based on its own pattern recognition, it will surpass humanity’s accumulated knowledge. Under these circumstances, it may provide results beyond what humanity can comprehend outside the concept of mere “outcome”. This will be an uncharted territory raising questions on how we could accept its new intelligence. </span></p>

<h2><b>Getting Accustomed to New Ways of Learning</b></h2>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"> It’s rather engaging to expect how the game of go will shift the strategy board game industry after Lee Sedol’s loss over AlphaGo. To learn the game of go was to acquire its method using the history of human experience. By observation, an increasing number of people are picking up go through artificial intelligence. Our previous experience of learning go was simply through experience and acquired knowledge. AI has now suggested ways that are incomprehensible to the human experience. Professional players are now learning new ways of go through computers. Go players who cannot succeed without handling computers may eventually face defeat. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"> This illustrates upcoming opportunities and new realities we will soon face. The most crucial matter for companies would be to nimbly search for opportunities that require outcomes exceeding the human logic through the use of AI and data. Not to mention, we should understand the new territories that AI grants and familiarize ourselves with new ways of expanding knowledge. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As such, CEO Kwon made his first official visit to the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas earlier this month to stay on top of the latest trends in connectivity and smart solutions that can be applied to the manufacturing process in smart factories. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ultimately, a </span><a href="https://www.posri.re.kr/files/file_pdf/59/329/6680/59_329_6680_file_pdf_1476085473.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">smart factory for POSCO</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> would entail using smart sensors to pick up data, smart analysis through AI and automated production processes. Moreover, the smart factory would store and analyze its big data and apply it to make future improvements and prevent malfunctions. Aligned with many of POSCO’s business growth engines, major topics and themes at CES 2018 included smart homes, smart cities, autonomous cars and AI, and more than 3,900 companies put forth their best innovations.</span></p>
<h2><b>Smart Connectivity</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As more and more cities undergo smart transformations, the next big trend will be data collection and analysis through 5G connectivity. It was no surprise to see numerous innovations in smart transportation, smart grid, public safety, healthcare, data analytics and more at CES 2018. Moreover, city officials from early-adapting cities such as Kansas City, Miami and Las Vegas took to the stage to discuss their cities’ smartization plans. Some of the </span><a href="http://www.zdnet.com/article/ces-2018-cios-push-smart-city-agendas-through-tech-partnerships-outreach/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">topics discussed</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> included using GIS mapping software, smart construction, inclusive technology and autonomous transportation to enhance citizens’ productivity, efficiency, safety and well-being. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">CEO Kwon visited related booths to learn about new technologies POSCO could apply to its businesses. Currently, POSCO’s smart factories are run by POSCO ICT’s smart platform called PosFrame, which allows the factory to apply a digital genome map to operations via data collection, instantly convert smart factory initiatives in domains, act as a common platform for new technologies and apply the same, standardize smart factory model to other facilities through reusable software. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Also at this year’s CES, POSCO ICT signed an MOU with DPR Construction, a leading smart construction company to apply PosFrame to construction sites for more efficient, cost-effective and smarter construction processes. </span></p>
<h2><b>Smart Transportation</b></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Another major theme at this year’s CES was mobility. Namely, autonomous and electric mobility. Companies from all across the board from traditional car manufacturers and software companies to gaming companies lined up to showcase their new innovations. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Even as the market for sustainable EVs and autonomous EVs look to expand in 2018 and beyond, EVs only make up about 1 percent of the global fleet of cars and there’s still a ways to go before EVs become the norm. Drivers need to feel safe in their EVs or autonomous EVs, want greater range on a single charge and need to see more charging infrastructure in their communities before making the switch. </span></p>
