POSCO 1% Foundation has worked since 2015 to improve infrastructure for vulnerable communities in countries that serve as strategic business hubs.

Through construction volunteering, the foundation has supported 49 homes for vulnerable households and is continuing its efforts this year by renovating school facilities.

The Cilegon Korean Language School has produced 82 graduates, and the foundation plans to support Korean language education for 200 students this year.

POSCO 1% Foundation, funded by donations equivalent to 1% of the salaries of POSCO group employees, carried out a social contribution activity in Cilegon, Indonesia.

From August 2 to 8, the foundation conducted a global volunteer program with the participation of 50 POSCO group employees.

Cilegon is a strategic business hub for POSCO group and home to Krakatau POSCO, POSCO group’s first overseas integrated steelworks.

The volunteers helped improve the educational environment at Belumbang Elementary School, which has inadequate educational facilities. They renovated the walls of aging classrooms, repaired restrooms and built new classrooms, helping create a safe and comfortable learning environment.

The 50 volunteers were employees from POSCO group affiliates who volunteered to take part in the program. At the site, they saw firsthand how the “1% Sharing Fund,” to which they had contributed every month, was being used in the local community.

The program also included educational activities. Employees introduced Korean culture and interacted with local students through activities such as making Hangul name tags and traditional Korean masks.

“I felt a great sense of fulfillment seeing the 1% of my salary that I had contributed each month come back as smiles from the children,” said NO Se Rae, Junior Technical Manager in the Gwangyang Production Technology Department. “In addition to donating, this experience allowed me to experience the value of sharing firsthand by working alongside others at the site.”

“We are grateful for the sincere efforts of POSCO group employees,” said a teacher at Belumbang Elementary School. “The children will be able to envision a better future at their newly renovated school.”

Since 2015, POSCO 1% Foundation has carried out construction volunteering for vulnerable households in strategic business hubs, including Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. To date, it has supported 49 homes. Last year, the foundation opened a Korean language school in Cilegon, where 82 students completed the program. This year, it plans to support Korean language education for 200 students.

“Funded by employee donations, this volunteer program reflects our commitment to growing together with the Indonesian community,” said a POSCO 1% Foundation official. “It is also meaningful because it helps the next generation in Cilegon pursue their dreams in a better environment.”

Since its establishment in 2013, POSCO 1% Foundation has helped promote a culture of employee-participatory giving and continued various social contribution activities, including support for underserved communities in Korea and abroad and programs that help future generations achieve self-reliance.

There is a saying, “Think globally, act locally.” This saying means that the global strategy of a company should be considered from a global perspective, but its implementation should fit the local culture. POSCO, aiming to become a global leading steel company, also lays its base here.

‘How Do You Like POSCO?’ is a series presented here at POSCO Newsroom, introducing POSCO’s major global business sites and local employees who are living the global POSCO dream. The first story is about four local employees at PT.KRAKATAU POSCO, Indonesia.

*PT.KRAKATAU POSCO
PT.KRAKATAU POSCO is located in a small city called ‘Cilegon’ in Indonesia, about 100 km from the capital, Jakarta. Cilegon has an area of about 175㎢, which is about ⅓ of Seoul, with a population of about 500,000. The average annual temperature is 24 ~ 32 ℃. PT.KRAKATAU POSCO is the first integrated steelworks in Southeast Asia. It is a joint venture company between PT Krakatau Steel Tbk, Indonesia, and POSCO Korea and was established in 2010. With 3 million tons of crude steel production capacity per year, there are a total of 2,390 employees working here — including 2,250 local employees and 140 Korean employees.

Just like the many POSCO employees, who were proud to contribute to the national economic development in the past, POSCO Newsroom hopes the local employees — along with the four employees here — will grow further in POSCO, and later on, contribute to the regional and national development.

‘Beyond,’ POSCO Global Youth Volunteers comprised of university students, volunteered at Steel Village in Cilegon, Indonesia for twelve consecutive days starting from January 20th. Together with 23 Beyonders from Indonesia, 90 Beyonders from POSCO rolled up their sleeves to build houses, also teaching local students and participating in cultural exchange activities in the area. The 23 Beyonders from Indonesia were scholarship recipients of POSCO TJ Park Foundation, an organization dedicated to expanding Asia’s academic and cultural networks and nurturing young talents.

Currently at its 12th cycle, the current Beyonders thereby called Beyond 12th, the Beyond is part of POSCO’s endeavor to extend its corporate citizenship by cultivating global talents. Beyond volunteering is not a sporadic event. It’s an 8-month program organized in a way through which participants could truly embody the community service spirits and mutual respect.

To date, over 1,100 students participated in the program working on 270-plus construction projects, teaching activities, and various other programs across India, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Beyonders also contributed their talents to various domestic projects in Pohang, Gwangyang, and Incheon.

House-building project was the very first task the Beyond 12th took on when they arrived in Cilegon. The Beyonders built houses for a total of 10 impoverished households in the vicinity of PT Krakatau POSCO. For each house to be built, around 11 to 12 volunteers were assigned.

The housing project is linked to the Indonesian Steel Village Project, which started in 2018. Each housing unit consisted of two rooms, a living room and a toilet with a total surface area of 30 square meters. During the 12-day construction period, Beyonders proactively reached out to the local community to build meaningful connections and foster mutual understanding. Check out the pictures below:
